Title: The Last Express
Post by: darthkiwi on February 19, 2013, 03:44:08 PM
Anyone played this?

It is AMAZING. Film noir type plot, political intrigue, rotoscoping, overheard conversations, a brilliant time progression/rewind system and a really, really wonderful MacGuffin. :D

And the whole thing's set on a train and a lot of it involves outwitting the train as a system (guards, locked doors etc)
eg. unlocking doors while guards' backs are turned, nipping into the off-limits luggage compartment when the conductor is announcing the next stop, climbing out the window and gripping the outside of the train to escape searches.
It's also very In Medias Res, in a very, very good way :D

I've never played them but I heard they took all of the games' cutscenes and turned it into a feature lenght movie or a short TV mini-series or something.

Now that's pretty cool

I actually played this only a month or two back, and I must say, this is highly recommended!

Go, play it! Now! :D

@stika: Oh really? I had no idea but that would definitely work. One thing that interests me about this is that all of the cinematics are so clearly done in a filmic style - closeups of objects, faces - and what's really odd is that when you look at certain inventory objects you get a first-person view of it, because, yeah, it's an adventure game in the first person so of course you do. But this is the same kind of cinematic shot that's used in film noir when a normally third-person character looks at, say, a letter or object that the director wants to focus on: you see through their eyes as they read it.

So basically, I can totally see how that would work really well as a film. But I think it works just as well (if not better) as a game, which I guess is the litmus test for whether a game is doing enough "work", or whatever.

@Guyra: yes! Totally agree! :D
