Title: Why personal information to download SL1-4?
Post by: sharpnova on March 23, 2013, 11:23:03 PM
Why on earth do you require us to give you our personal information in order to download the Silver Lining episodes 1-4 batch?

I find this a bit ridiculous.

You moved it to the store to circumvent some cycle bug that you weren't able to sort out directly. Fine. But do you realize that in order to download TSL now you have to add it to your cart and check out which requires you providing a billing address, name, email, etc.?

If I've overlooked something, then it was basically your fault because I followed the logical steps in the TSL acquisition process.

If not then you need to seriously rethink this policy.

I was not aware that it was requesting a billing address. That seems rather odd because I distinctly turned off shipping address and as it's a free product it shouldn't be asking you for any billing info either. You *do* need a name and email in order to receive the download link though, as the link gets sent to your email address.

The reason we moved it to the new store was to unify all our products in one place, not to "circumvent a bug". It seemed rather absurd to have separate places for our products, regardless of what's free or not. Also, you are not required to make an account; you can check out with a guest account in the store. Again, though, as the digital delivery service we use distributes links through email we have to request basic email information.

I tried this the other day, and it DOES require a billing address. I gave it a fake one. And that was without creating an account.

Yeah it's fine to give a fake billing address for downloading TSL, I'm just puzzled why they considered that to be necessary for free orders in the first place. I will contact Shopify about it tomorrow as they are closed today. I don't see any way to "turn it off" in the theme settings.

Any update on this?  I went to download from the store and tried to use the "guest" option, it still wants a billing address.

I'm not sure, I'll let Oldbushie know you asked about this when I next see him.

But yeah, I wish there was a way to not have the billing address prompt up

I guess it would make sense if they actually were shipping you an actual physical copy of the game though.

Yeah... but I don't think there are physical copies of anything in the store. :-\

I haven't found a way to disable this yet, I'll have to pester their tech support some more. :/ Just use a fake billing address, it doesn't matter. As long as you use a real email address.

The problem is that we still need a billing address for regular store items because credit card companies like people to verify that they are who they say they are.

Asking for a *shipping* address doesn't happen at any point in the process, though, as far as I know.

Even with Shopify's latest upgrades there's no way apparently to fix this, those who want TSL will just have to put in a dummy billing address if you don't want to reveal personal info.
