Title: Random Computer Issues
Post by: GrahamRocks! on May 08, 2013, 12:33:56 PM
"When you tup spirits, you find only the graves..."?

-I hate my desktop PC sometimes. I just attempted to download 5 Days a Stranger (and Trilby: The art of Theft), and I got the exact same message I did when I tried to download TSL onto it: "Windows can not allow this file to be downloaded." Even though I took Snabbott's advice and fixed my settings!

So, then I think "Screw it! I'm going to go play KQ2+ and see if I can get that max score I've been craving!" I click the icon, click Play Game... and another text box appears saying (paraphrased), "Windows can not find this file. Please check that it is spelled correctly and try again."

So I sigh and go to the AGDI website, thinking that I'd accidentally deleted the file somehow, and when I attempt to download it... I get the same message that I got for 5 Days and TSL even though THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENNING AS I'VE DOWNLOADED ONTO MY DESKTOP BEFORE AND IT NEVER REJECTED IT!

And to top this all off, after attempting to start up 5 Days anyway, my computer gave me a BSOD which erased my original message on here that I was going to post a few minutes ago! I'm now typing this on my phone and I'm very annoyed right now!

it hurts

How am I supposed to do that?! I have a Windows 7 computer! Oh and also, I downloaded 5 Days onto my laptop, stuck it in it's own little folder (as per Yahtzee's readme instructions), did the windows setup (just normal at first) and started the game.

It was full screen as I expected, but when I heard the opening theme play and saw Trilby's car, there was no narration ("My name is Trilby." enc) and the screen remained there until I clicked/ tapped the spacebar frantically. After a lot of that, I heard Trilby open his car door, but the picture was a very faint title screen as if it were fading in and froze.

So I reluctantly restarted, and went back to the setup, putting it in window format. First the "fastest" version, which makes me immediately think Oh God, why is it so small?! I can barely see the text! so I turn it over to the second option, which makes it bigger and easier to read (which is good), but I can hardly move the cursor around without it freezing and skipping Trilby's opening monologue.

Uuuuggghhh!

it hurts

Huh? Windows 7 is a piece of cake compared to Windows 8. o_O Just make a new directory on the C drive that is the GrahamRocks folder and save everything to that, I dunno. Why do you get the impression you're forced to download everything to desktop? What browser do you even use? You *can* change the default download behaviors in most browsers. Also, don't use IE because it is the browser from hell.

I use IE. If something doesn't work on my laptop, I put it on my desktop instead. Some games work fine on my desktop, some do not.

I did what the instructions said: I went to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom thingy, and scrolled down to File Download and Enabled it. So, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong...

YES!!!! I got KQ2+ working again! For some reason, the desktop icon wouldn't access the game, but the download file did. Huh.

Gear Icon / Tools on the main browser window -> View Downloads -> Options. It lets you set the default download directory. Again though, IE is the fastest way to get nasty viruses on your computer, I warn everyone away from it. I personally use Opera, but Chrome and Firefox are both decent as well. IE is also a pain in the butt to change settings for.

Took me all day, but I FINALLY got 5 Days a Stranger to work on my desktop!!!!!! Turns out it was downloading okay, but the reason it wasn't working was because Windows saw the executable file as a threat and kept blocking it. Look, I know that Chzo is an Eldritch Abomination from the Realm of Magick, but that's no excuse!

I downloaded the Special Edition btw.

Oh God, first room and I already hear The Whispers...! I thought they started in TN, not 5D!

Oh, yeah. I get the same problem with Norton, but it at least has the decency to make a little box pop up that says "There! I deleted that nasty thing you downloaded! I hope you weren't going to *play* that thing?!" XD

wait, is it GOG that's giving you that message, your browser, your firewall?

You may need to adjust the security settings in the internet control panel (probably for the internet zone).

It's not GOG, I know that. I've tried downloading other things (like TSL on my desktop, thinking that maybe I'd be able to fix the "episode 3 ending crash" if I downloaded onto my desktop instead) and it's given me that message before which annoys me.

Well, Steam is working fine at least! I just got the Cthulhu Saves The World+ Breath of Death VII combo pack for $2.99. Tried out the former just now, and while I suck at the combat (so busy trying to beat these darn Dolphins, I'm not paying attention to HP!) I'm enjoying it thus far. Have not tried the latter yet.

Snabbott, I've done the Tools-Internet Options-Security-Custom Level for Internet-Download Enable thing already. It doesn't do anything!

And downloading, say, FireFox isn't going to work because guess what! I get the same message again when attempting to download it!
