the main thing im scared of are the huge spiders we have been finding :-\, especially the white tip ones that poison you with something that eats your flesh :-\

Are those the ones that they ate on Survivor?  XB

 :X :X :X :X
Don't get me started on reality TV.....those attention hungry saps, ate poisonous spiders for a quick buck?  Can't they do work like a normal person?  Or at least pretend to do work like Bill Gates?

Post by: Yonkey on May 02, 2004, 06:48:52 AM
lol, apparantly the spiders "were boiled, so they're completely safe". :X  I would still never eat any of that crap those people did.  ;P

Ugh, gross reality shows :X

I recall a promo for one of them actually saying "You deserve to see people suffer" - That's more than suggesting you need to have a somewhat sadistic side to enjoy the show :S

They were still spiders...boiled or not, they put a poisonous spider inside their mouth, chewed it up, and swallowed it!  EWWWW!! EWWW!
And worse, people watched it and, probably, found it entertaining!

Post by: Storm on May 02, 2004, 07:32:00 AM
There were shows where people ate far more gross things than boiled spiders  :o

Well after all teh dramaz in the house this week I think its only right that anyone watching should discuss  here their thoughts :) Of course that means that only me, kimmie and Leanne will be able to post but hey, maybe some lurkers from the UK will post?  ;P

I'LL START!

I HATE and I mean HATE Victor. Possibly the most annoying gangstaaa wannabe person on TV that I can remember who seems to be some kind of mental institute escapee.

So who do you UK people think will win?

omg mega offensive grundy!  ;D

I always say every year I won't watch it and every year I end up getting hooked! They had to call the police in a few days ago because all the housemates started fighting each other! Never seen anything so entertaining in a looooong time.

So there Grundy :p

While I'm not sure I'd put it as... er, vehemently as Grundy did, I will say that I have heard of Big Brother, and like all reality shows, I very happily refrain from watching it.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Well Big Brother is the daddy of all reality TV shows, its what started them off practically. They aired last seasons US Big brother in the UK and it is so unbelievably different to the UK version. Its not made into a "TV show" as such with music and stuff. It's more like a documentary type thing when compared to the US one lol.

I think the most stupid one I ever saw was the Anna Nicole show, omfg she's just so... cheap and pointless...  :-X VERY disgusting show

American Idol wasnt -that- bad :P and Real World just freaking sucks too.

The only one I like is Survivor, but only after the first few weeks since those are usually pretty dry. :X  American/Canadian Idol is one of those shows I watch if I have nothing better to do.  ;D

I never really liked Big Brother, The Mole, Amazing Race, Fear Factor, Bachelor/ette, or any of those other ones.  ;D

Otherwise, no one else, unless you lack any social aptitude, watches it.

cant believe im doin this but im turning the topic back towards its actual title!!

i think some ppl are being to harsh *coughgrundycough* lol.

ok so the show has its bad points, it has its good points too just like everything in life!

each to their own!

if our little 12yr old girl alex wants to watch reality tv, then there's no reason to imply that ppl who do watch them have no life!

and anyway alex is soon to become an 18 yr old man so  ;P

its an escape from reality, watching ppl in a false environment while they stab eachother in the back for money! actually its just like relaity isnt it...

Hey, did somebody mention BB?  Well, one of the last US shows I saw was the one where the guy held a knife to the girl's throat as a "joke" (he was kicked from the house at that time).

And then they had the version where they put together ex-couples.  How wrong is that? Let's just pry into these people's private lives, figure out who they've been with and then put them in a house together.  That one, I didn't watch.

Like I said earlier, it's been a while since I've watched BB.  Stopped viewing after the second season...and I think they're in BB5 now, or something like that!

I dunno... I'm sorta with Grundy... if people would stop watching all the reality schlock, it would go off the air and we'd have room for "real" shows again. Granted, most of that would be schlock too, but at least it would be fictional schlock. ::)

I see enough people being morons and jerks in real life... why would I want to watch it on TV? Especially when they're getting *paid* and getting famous for being morons and jerks. (And you wonder why society is so awful nowadays... we're rewarding the wrong behavior!)

OK, I'm done. ;P

Title: Re:Temporary Big brother UK Thread
Post by: Jeysie on June 30, 2004, 04:43:58 PM
Ahh, I'm sorry, I misunderstood your misunderstanding. ;P

I mostly meant, well, fictional shows. You know, sitcoms, SF, dramas, etc. TV shows that tell a scripted story, rather than TV shows that serve as a backdrop for the story being made by people making asses out of themselves.

Either that, or shows that involve real people but actually have some kind of redeeming value, such as some of the remodelling shows, or competitions of "true" skill (like Junkyard Wars or Battlebots or many game shows, etc.), or "This Old House"-type things or documentaries or whatever. Actually, I kind of liked "The Amazing Race"... at least it required some actual talents to compete.

Basically anything other than yahoos getting their fifteen minutes of fame without doing anything of "value". :P

Jeysie! Thankyou for clarifying what I was trying to say all along... ;)

Personally, I have watched a lot of episodes of "This Old House" and "Junkyard Wars", I wouldn't class those os reality TV, more DIY... Sounds like you have some decent taste in TV Viewing!  ;B

But yes, More of that, and Less retards on TV!

For what it's worth, Colin and Brad showed a good deal of improv prowess at their live show!

For more what it's worth, Harrison took me to a lot of improv shows when he was in college, and I've seen a lot of improvers manage to pull some seriously funny things entirely out of their butts.

Hmm. Several of the colleges in my area have troupes, and Harrison was the soundman for one of the ones at his college, so that's where I saw almost all of the shows I went to. (They'd sometimes have all-day Improv Olympics where a couple dozen of the troupes would gather at UMass to perform... oh, wow, was that a blast!) Maybe your college might have a troupe or two? (Of course, maybe college improv is more a New England thing than a TN thing... :P )

Alternatively, they have a Comedy Mystery Murder Theater Troupe here which, while more scripted, still has an improv feel to it... maybe you have something like that, too. Look around, there must be at least a few nutty improvers in your area! ;D

If BB is the only reality show you have in the UK, then no wonder you're so blase about it. I dunno about Grundy's neck of the woods, but here we have something like a dozen different reality shows, at least. :P It's definitely crowding out other types of shows a bit.

And yes, there is value in making someone laugh... however, there is a difference between pretending to be idiotic to make someone laugh... and actually *being* idiotic. Kind of the difference between laughing *with* someone and laughing *at* someone. :P

There's also something to be said about entertainment that doesn't glorify being an idiot. (IMHO the better things that involve people pretending to be an idiot are those intended as a way to poke satire and parody at said idiocy, not ones meant to just be their own purpose.)

There are Dozens of reality shows here... I guess that's because there's so many 12 year old girls...   ;P

There are Australian Survivor series, BB, Pop-Start, Idol... well, all the big ones, there are Australian versions too.

I think the most popular ones here right now are DIY sort of shows. Like "The Block", where an empty apartment is renovated and at the end of the show, goes on auction to the public.
In the end, I'd rather watch good fiction! Or atleast something more intelligent than 'reality'.

There are Dozens of reality shows here... I guess that's because there's so many 12 year old girls...   ;P
Actually i think its more 16 to 18 year old girls :P

But Yeah we get alot of Reality crap in Australia and not many of us like it (except 16 to 18 year old girls :P) :suffer:

Oh so true....

My sister ( 18 ) watches BB...  as long as she's watching it in her room, then none of us care, if she sticks it on in the loungeroom, we all smash her head in.   :suffer:
Well, not wuite that violent, but you get the point.  ;)

We've just our annual portion of Idiot(2004) (actually it's called 'Idol' but that just shows you how I think about it), and the most important lesson I learned about that, whilst not watching it, was that the contestant with the largest fan-base won the final, while the best singer was only third. :-X
