Title: CD to DVD
Post by: Louisiana Night on September 28, 2004, 11:08:18 PM
I made this poll, partly because of the Myst games. In the sequel to it(Riven?), the switching of CDs, was EXTREMELY annoying(they have a DVD version now).

I've seen other games, not just Adventure, that could take advantage of it. There are a few games that use the DVD-ROM format now, and personally, I'd like to see more.

So I vote for "Yes". :D

interesting :P

care to explain a bit more about it? I personally... don't mind to be honest, and it wasn't a concern of this, but you say it could be good? how?

yeah, i would like to see more games on dvd too! there are lots of games that use multiple cd's (ff etc) and i don't mind switching once, but it get's irritating if that happends more often (also switching back to previous cd's ; \)

EDIT: it depends on the game  ::) ...though I wouldn't mind if all games are on dvd  :P

I say it depends on the game.  If the game is under 700mb then just stick with CD. ;D

I'll start with games that are large enough, to require multiple CDs. The cost of one DVD, is less than multiple DVDs(cost will either be reduced for the company, consumer, or both). It would either require less swapping of discs, or require less hardisk space(minimum install).

For games that can fit on a CD.
More features(making of the game, etc) could be added(example=Dragon's Lair). Higher resolution for movies(in other words, less blurry). The game-packs that are sold, could be on one DVD, instead of a dozen CDs(more user-friendly, and more cost-effective). If they'd take advantage of it, there would be room to include a movie(okay, that one's just wishful thinking).

Other advantages.
More ports from videogame consoles(some think that their game won't sell for the PC, because it would require a DVD). A game made for the format, that worked on Xbox/PS2/PC/DVD player/etc would be more likely to be made, if more DVD games for the PC were made(interactive movies/Dragon's Lair).

I'm sure there are MANY more advantages, but that's all I could think of, at the moment. :P

Depends on the size of the game :-\

I did forget two BIG disadvantages.

That not everyone has a DVD drive, and wouldn't be able to play the games, and that those that don't have one, might not bother checking the requirements. :P

well, the knew games that need more then one cd has a high requirement, those with pc's that can meet that requirement have usually a dvd player (well, that's at least what i've noticed here...)

No

No games/programs should ever be on DVD for the simple reason that I don't own a DVD drive. Of course, once I get a DVD drive (some years from now, probably) you'll be most welcomed to put whichever games you want on DVD.

The above does not apply to games/programs I don't play/use and don't intend to ever play/use - those can be put on DVDs right now. Heck, they can be put on Laser Disks for all I care :P

Oddly, I think that's the most sensible vote thus far. :D

Last time I checked, DVD writers(that worked with both formats) cost about $90(US). It's been awhile since I checked though. :-\

I wanna Sony Blue-Ray disc burner. :P

for those that don't know, it might be replacing DVDs in the future(I'd rather it didn't though)

Wonder if that will become the standard or something else -- can we all say VHS vs. Beta   :P

There are only two formats worth mentioning, that might replace DVD(sadly, I can't remember the other's name). Blue-Ray's the one I'd rather not have replace it, the other format is FAR cheaper, and is more advanced. Unfourtunatly, only two companys(last time I checked) are supporting it(I think one is Pioneer). :(

I hope there will be at least full backwards compatibility with current DVDs.

Both should be capable of reading DVDs, but not writing DVDs. :-\

Then again, nobody has the money to buy either format's writing drives. :P

Here, they cost about $40 (a DVD burner is about $90), but I still won't be buying one anytime soon because

a. I have no games/programs on DVDs (Ok, that's no entirely true. I have one... but I won't buy a DVD player just so I can run the .NET tutorial) and my computer is too slow to run movies properly.

b. I have higher priorities to spend my money on. One of them is buying a screen (Which is more costly than a DVD, but also a bit more essential to the computer's operation).

To answer dew7 from the previous page, I know that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drives will play DVDs.  Those two are the most likely candidates to 'replace' DVD in the future.

As for the poll, even though a lot of us own DVD drives (including myself) I think the problem is still relatively low market penetration compared to how prolific CD-drives are.  There are some special edition DVDs of games (like the Sims 2) just coming out now.  But those are limited edition, for the hardcore gamers.

Hmmmm I wouldn't say hardcore gamers a such, just gamers that know the CD version has 4 bloody CDs! I was so shocked when i opened the box today to find a rainbow of CDs waiting for me inside, wish I'd forked out the extra for the DVD version now.

Oh and I agree with the point about DVD drives not being as widespread as CD drives. 5 years time and things may be very different mind.
