Title: KQ compatibility
Post by: Louisiana Night on October 07, 2004, 02:02:53 PM
Kings Quest games that work in Linux. 8)

Going by my testing, with the exception of KQ2+ and MoE(for obvious reasons). I used DOSbox for dos games, and WINE for windows games.

Kings Quest1(dos)=works
Kings Quest1(windows)=works
Kings Quest1 Remake(dos)=works
Kings Quest1 Remake(windows)=works
Kings Quest1+(dos)=works
Kings Quest1+(windows)=failed
Kings Quest2(dos)=works
Kings Quest2(windows)=works
Kings Quest2+(dos)=works
Kings Quest2+(windows)=failed
Kings Quest3(dos)=works
Kings Quest3(windows)=works
Kings Quest4(dos)=works
Kings Quest4(windows)=works
Kings Quest5(dos)=works(audio sometimes difficult)
Kings Quest5(windows)=works(difficult)
Kings Quest6(dos)=works
Kings Quest6(windows)=works(slight tweaking)
Kings Quest7(dos)=works
Kings Quest7(windows)=works
Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity=works(minus movies)
Unofficial Kings Quest9=unknown
------------------------------------------------------------

Kings Quest games that work in NT/2000/XP. :P

Kings Quest: Mask of Eternity=won't work in NTFS

------------------------------------------------------------
All the DOS KQ games, should work on a Mac also(or any other OS that DOSbox supports). I am curious about the Windows versions though. WINE should also work on OSX(due to using freeBSD code). Has anyone here tried running them on a Mac? ???

King's Quest 1+
King's Quest 2+

and I've gotten KQ6 to work in XP too, but I forget if I had to use DOSBox.  :-\

All games mentioned in this post, I did not use emulators for.

Kings Quest 6/7 work in XP(I forgot to add them). :P

I never managed to get 5 working correctly in XP. :-\

Also, I managed to get the MoE demo working in NTFS, so I might have been wrong about the game not working with it. :!Oops:

P.S. I've gotten all DOS versions of the KQ games to work in XP, using DOSbox.

There may be a way to get MoE partly working in Linux. :D

It seems that it's the movies/cutscenes that cause the errors/difficulties(since I don't have the game, I can't test the idea).

Hi guys...since I don't know a whole lot about computers, I have no idea what I would need to do to get KQ6 to run in XP.   ??? What program do I need?  I have been able to get the old ones to run in XP (KQ1-4) and also KQ7.  For some reason those will work, but the others won't.   I can't get 5 or 6 to work.  It has me puzzled.  KQ6 is my favorite one to play because of all the characters and puzzles.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!   :help: Thanks so much!

If it's the DOS version, you could use this.

DOSbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1)

It's not the easist thing to use, but I'm sure we can help you learn to use it. :)

There's also VDMsound, but since I rarely use it, I'll let someone else comment on it. 8)
