I had a strange feeling that someone around here was going to start a thread on that topic!
Sadly I have no idea who the Red Sox our and as for the curse of the Bambino...well... ???
Still, 86 years is a long time to wait for anything!
Haha, okay, some quick history then!
The Boston Red Sox are the baseball team of Boston. They haven't won a World Series since 1918, and when Babe Ruth ("the Bambino") was traded to the Yankees, *supposedly* he put his curse mojo on the Sox, saying they wouldn't win another World Series for 100 hundred years. The New York Yankees are also our big rival team, much tension there, so any time the Sox and Yankees play at all, it's a huge deal.
We've done well a number of times, and come so close so many times, but never managed to win the series. 1986 was the last time we got there, but that didn't work out so well! The Red Sox are essentially the constant underdog, always doing well, but never quite getting it.
So, we first won the American League Championship against the Yankees, which was HUGE. Then we went to the World Series and we just last night beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in a four-game sweep of the Series. It's been 86 years, and the "curse" is broken.
This is quite frankly ENORMOUS for Boston and cause of MUCH celebration!!
I don't know much about baseball, but it's hard not to know who the Boston Red Sox are(in the USA anyways). :P
As long as the New York Yankees don't win, I'm happy(mostly because of their habit of winning). ;P

Grundy: We've been over that already. ;P If you must know, two countries compete. I've heard that they're making yet another attempt at organizing a "true" World Series.
Anyhoo. I was content to post my appreciation for the Red Sox in the GOOD thread, and await Katie's weighing in on the matter. :) It must have been a complete madhouse in Boston! We New Englanders can certainly be a passionate folk at times, especially concerning the Red Sox...
I think that even if the Red Sox hadn't won the Series, we'd all still be pretty elated over them bouncing back and defeating the Yankees!
Speaking of, I was reflecting somewhat on the irony that traditionally "Yankee" specifically refers to a New Englander, yet our most passionate sports rivalry is with the NY Yankees...

Lol. IIRC, Australia did reasonably well in Baseball. I can't exactly remeber, though.
And, since Grundy wasn't here, but I was, I figured I'd selflessly take it on myself to act snarky for him :P
Perhaps it's the fact that I haven't grown up on baseball that makes it so uninteresting to me ???. Then again, I've grown up on cricket, and I still think it's excrutiating to watch.
Ah well. Congrats to the Red Sox! :D

To be honest, I'm not so much of a baseball fan nowadays. I used to enjoy watching baseball frequently as a kid, though, with a few exceptions, I usually didn't know or care who was playing - I just liked watching the game itself. XD
I'm really mostly just a Red Sox fan! (grin) Living in MA, it's kind of hard not to get caught up in being either a Red Sox fan or a Yankees fan. (Yes there are Massachusites who are Yankees fans... they're a very strange lot.)
Besides, and this is nothing more than my own personal interpretation mind you, the Red Sox are emblematic of the MA spirit. They have so much potential, and manage to garner the spotlight at times and come yea close to winning... and then at the last moment they do something stupid and screw it up. I think my pessimistic optimism towards the Red Sox parallels my pessimistic optimism towards MA in general. ;P
But not this time! Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come for Massachusetts and its natives...

I have been hearing alot about the Red Sox on TV lately, I was surprised to here the reporter say that they hadnt won for 86 years :o :-\
Yes, it has occurred to me that our "World Series" is pretty far from it. But that's still what we call it, for whatever reason! "National Champions" would sound good, too, really.
There aer little league (younger kids' teams) that actually do play world-wide; teams from Japan do pretty well in that league's world championship from what I can figure.
86 years!! I know, it's a damn long time. And yeah, it was pretty crazy in Kenmore Square (near Fenway Park, the Red Sox home field), THOUSANDS of people gathering. I was personally somehow more excited over beating the Yankees than the whole thing, too, though!

The Japanese baseball team was considered to 'dream team' at the Olympics... and the aussies won a few games over them! :o
And yeah, I take this topic personally, as I played baseball for quite a few years and played at Rep level for a few. I was often a pitcher/catcher. ;)
I think it's a great game, I just wish it was more common here is Aus! Atleast I enjoy it more than bloody cricket. ::)
