Title: KQ fanlisting
Post by: TakariFreak on February 09, 2003, 09:46:08 AM
In case some of you didn't read about it on the last forum, I'm making a KQ fanlisting, part of thefanlistings.org.  it has already been approved, so when it's done, it WILL be a part of that network, and hopefully many KQ fans will find it there!

The layout (this is #3 BTW) is mostly done, except for a few small things.  What I REALLY need is info and buttons (mostly buttons).  If Anyone would like to help with that, I'd be VERY greatful.  And of course I'll give you credit.

So if you want to help at all, Either PM me or send my and E-mail.

To Say:  Remember the 2nd e-mail I sent you?  Well, at the same address, you can see the 3rd and final (most likely) design.  It's similar to version 2, but greatly improved.

thanks for remind me of it, Im glad I saved your emails, cause I lost the IM you sent me to the old forum, when they were upgrading this one apparently they lost their latest one, and the previous to that one was a backup from december, so I lost all those mssgs from the old forum. Anyhow we need to talk about that asap btw.

What buttons do you need? And what color theme would you like? I'd like to try making the buttons. :)

Well, these buttons are different from usuall buttons.  THESE buttons are going to be for fans to put on THEIR sites to show that they are a fan.  (take a look at http://www.dark-stars.net/Joined.htm to see some buttons from fanlistings I've joined as a sample).  The standard sizes are 50 x 50, and 100 x 50 (there's another size too, but I can't think of it).  Obviously, this this will be a KQ fanlisting, they buttons would have pictures and/or symbols and such related to KQ (and say "fan" or "KQ fan" in a corner).  I have limited skill making this sort of thing, plus I don't have many pictures.  I DO have a screen capture program, but it's not perfect, and the only ORIGINAL game I can run is KQ 6.

http://www.geocities.com/sierra-a-rama/kq/kq.html has some image galleries for KQ7 and 8.

Otherwise, just specify "King's Quest #" in an image Google search to get some nice images.

Thanks. :D

I'm working on my web page, dunno if I should have some of the old stuff or not from previous pages I made. I'll probably stick the text adventure back in tho. :)

I hate to sound dumb here, but what IS that fanlist, exactly? ???

Don't worry, I'm still not clear myself...

Basically, though, it's a list of all the fans of something and the fans themselves have special buttons on their personal websites that link to the fanlisting (or something like that). Correct me if I'm wrong, anybody...

A fanlist is just that..A listing of fans of a certain topic.  Fan who DO have websites (you don't need one to join) usually put up a button on their site (found on the fanlist itself) to show their pride of being a fan (and to possibly let other fans in on the fanlist).

I'v ealready got MOST of it done, so I can open it fairly soon.  Say and Ben have offered their talents as well for a cool interface.

Bushie, I croped and such from the image on your site, so I have a few buttons right now for site-owners to put on their sites once I open.  For this, I'll put you on the credits page (for without you, I would not have had the pictures to make the buttons from) when it's erady to open.

And SAY, I DID manage to get the background as a gif file and have it blend with the scrollbars.  However, the "watermark" part of it it a brighter blue.  I checked the text, and it's still readable, which is good.  I'm uploading the updates now, so you can look at the address AGAIN to see!

hey!  Now I'm falling behind on post count!  No fair!

Anyway, I'm making more progress, but It's not loaded to see.  I have a few more codes, both 50 x 50 and 100 x 50.

I can make them ok, but I just need some screen shots to make them WITH.  And I can't run ANY KQ's on my comp!  (Well, I can run 6, but the voices don't work, and my sucky screen capture program will ot let me capture from it)  DAMN XP!

ALso, should I inclue Mask of Eternity in there?  I don't even consider it part of the KQ series (although I DO let my self tolerate that it DID take place in that UNIVERSE, but separate from the series).  I need feedback on that.  As of yet, I have NOT put anything in there on it.
Title: KQ fanlisting
Post by: Storm on February 13, 2003, 03:16:19 PM
No, No, and HELL NO!!! ):c

Please don't add MOE!!! it's NOT a part of the KQ series!!!
Never never never never never!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o
Title: KQ fanlisting
Post by: Storm on February 13, 2003, 03:20:54 PM
Maybe you can add, like, a side list specifically for the MOE fans?
Like, if you don't like onion in your salad and everyone else in your family do, you make salad and put onion on the side so if someone wants it they can add it to their salad :P

Besides, that's a good way to know who are the MOE fans, so I can start throwing the tomatos at them (or the whole salad) :D

Post by: TakariFreak on February 13, 2003, 03:44:35 PM
Well, I just loaded the codes up to the site (only those who I gave the address to can see it ebfore it opens, haha!).  I have 2 50 x 50 for games 1-7, and 1 100 x 50 for each.

I have decided, for now, NOT to inclue MOE.  I know jack about the game, even tough I own it and played it for about 5 minutes.  I truely don't belive it belongs there.

It's like this:  It's part of the KQ universe, but NOT the series.  Fanfiction is like that too, same universe, but NOT part of the orginal.

I MAY add it at a later date.  Right now, I'm focused on getting the site running for use.  Basically, I need some KQ links (can anyone help me out?  There's aren't many KQ sites left, and may be hard to find them), and general info for the games, but I can do that myself.

Technically, I COULD have the site running in 20 minutes, but I want to put effort in here (besides the fact that i've gone through 3 layouts thus far.

But it's probably going to get a revamp once I'm done will all college crap and I get some imagination.

Does alt-printscreen not work? That's the screen-capture I use, it just copies the screen so you can paste it elsewhere (like in mspaint). If XP doesn't support that anymore, I think I saw a good Windows-based screen-capture program a little while back...

Post by: TakariFreak on February 13, 2003, 09:17:16 PM
I never knew that!  I'll try it.

My dad has LView on his comp, Ill try that.

But i don't know if either will work, since I can get KQ 6 to run in Dos mode, but NOT windows mode.  it's screwed up.  I've done it before in XP, i don't know why I can't now.  I run from the CD usually, and open up the .exe, but I opens for about a second, and closes down!  Anyone know why?

Do you have Win98/95 compatibility mode on at all? Is resolution 256 color 640x480? You probably have the right installation (Windows install) or it wouldn't be able to install in the first place, so that's not it. That's all I can think of.
Title: KQ fanlisting
Post by: TakariFreak on February 14, 2003, 09:24:48 AM
Well, I've TRIED to amke it run for thsoe, but that didn't work.  Like I said, I can install it and get to run in dos mode, but I need it to run in windows mode.

Ans while I'm on it, I can't get KQ 7 to run either, even if I install it, I get a messgae saying "windows title not found" whatever THAT means.

Post by: Oldbushie on February 14, 2003, 11:08:00 AM
Man, I can't even get KQ7 working anymore... the darn disc is too scratched up or something... maybe I should get a slower drive which is more accepting of scratches and stuff.

I'll ask my roommate if I can try the games on his computer and I'll see if I get the same errors (he has winxp, I have win98 ).

Hey, guess what?

Dosbox can run KQ6!!!!

And it should run in winxp since it uses its own internal dos commands, it's basically a win32 app

turn off sounds, though, cuz they get a little staticky (dosbox ain't perfect yet). And I HAVE gotten a successful screenshot with Alt-PrintScreen in Dosbox!!!!!

So use that.

I haven't tested KQ7, but like I said, that cd's beena  bit buggy for me.

Be sure to mount your cd, just in case (not sure if that's needed). You probably already know how to mount stuff, but just run the mount command in Dosbox if you need help.

Ok thanks!  But what exactly IS dosbox anyway?  I have never heard of it before now.

Well, I can get KQ6 to run ok now, but still no speech.

Anyway, I can at least get KQ7 to START (the window opens, and BEGINS to load).  However, when it starts to load, I get the error:  "DLL not initiallized", and when I click ok, I get the message:  "The instuction at 00000000 referenced memory at 00000000.  The memory could not be read from.  CLick ok to terminate applicaiton).

Also, under the proporties tab in the executible, the only tabs that are there are: General, COmpatibility, and Summary.  I've checked EVERY executible ont he cd and intall, and they only have these 3.

GRR!

Anyway, back to the fanlisting, I got more stuff loaded, and I'm still working on the about section.

ok, I managed to get dosbox (I had to download the 2nd latest version, the latest I get an error), But I have no idea how to make it work...

Also, Does the KQ collection cd work ok in XP? I'm looking into buying it, once I cna get it with a decent price.

I saw a thread that discusses how to run KQ5 & 6 on windows XP on the Tierra forums (off-topic section), also using some program.

I don't have that problem myself, I use windows 98 and they all run just fine on it :D

Have you even seen any of the games? pictures of them? anything? ::)

For dosbox, you have to type "mount c [folder name]" with folder name being something like c:\Sierra. Then, if the game needs the cd in order to run, you must mount that as well (if d drive, do "mount d d:\", if e drive, do "mount e e:\", you get the idea). Then type "c:" to get to the C drive and then you run your game, whatever it is called inside the folder.

And now that I'm back from my (very fun) half weekend retreat (due to snow) I can try the old games on my roommate's computer.

Let me know if you get it working okay!

Hey Storm!  Think you could reply to this post with the link from the Tierra forum you were talking about...I never get over there anymore and REALLY want to be able to play KQ5 (and 6 if it's not running on XP...haven't tried it yet).  If they won't let you, just send me a private message telling me or asking for my email so you can send it.  THANKS!!!

Good News!  The fanlisting will be opened either tomorrow or Monday nite (I have to work the am).  I finished the aBOUT PAGE (took an eternity), and All I have to do is put a credidts page up and put a few more links up.  If you webmasters of this site would post a link to there, I'd be greatful, but it's all up to you.  As soon as I open it, I'll post the addrss (in a sparte thread, so MORE people will notice it) on here, and the Tierra boards.
