Never! I renounce the term "muggle"! I'm just as human as you, and I deserve the right to choose how I'm defined! Don't let the wizards insult you so! FIGHT BACK! :P
Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods

The word "muggle" isn't an insult.

The word "mudblood" on the other hand, is different story altogether. :P

Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods

Muggle means human
Mudblood is a wizard/witch with human parents

That might help a bit :P
Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Yonkey on November 04, 2005, 07:15:17 AM
Ahh, but why didn't they call it Muggblood instead? ;P
Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Farquhar on November 04, 2005, 07:17:51 AM
Because the mud part is meant to represent the dirty or tainted aspect of the wizard/witch in question's blood. Quite cruel really.

A muggle is a non magical human whereas a mudblood is a human whos parents arent magical but they are. Its the equivalent of any racial slur you can think of :(

Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Farquhar on November 04, 2005, 10:52:19 AM
Muggle-born.
Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Rosella on November 04, 2005, 01:20:35 PM
What Farquhar said. :P There is no noun meaning a muggle-born witch or wizard other than, perhaps, "muggle-born witch" or "muggle-born wizard." However, someone's blood line shouldn't really matter, so just saying witch or wizard would be more politically correct.

Only evil wizards (Like He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named) discriminate against muggles. Purebloods tend to think that muggles or muggle-borns are unworthy of anything, but there are bad people who AREN'T magic. You can't blame them for being human.

I happen to be a fan of both Harry Potter and Star Wars, so I have to disagree with both of you. XD

Now, regarding the Muggle/Wizard debate...

In most cases, muggles have no idea that wizards exist. The exception to this is when a muggle is chosen to go to a wizarding school such as Hogwarts. The views that the family of the muggle-born wizard hold towards the magical world are varied. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. So sometimes, wizards and muggles get along fine. :)

I know! Seriously! Hermione and Harry would make a way better couple! I mean, Harry's brave and the star. Hermione's smart but a bit neglected and ignored. Hermione and Harry deeply care about each other in a mature way. Ron is too immature to actually show anything. I mean....is it late enough to talk about minor HBP plot points? :P

Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Rosella on December 05, 2005, 06:58:24 PM
I'm sticking with Harry. Even if Draco did like Hermione, she would have the self-respect to not go out with someone who hated her for her bloodline. There are so many examples of how Harry and Hermione care about each other (Like at the end of OotP.) He seems like the best match for her.

Hermione and Draco? That's just silly. :P

I'd have to agree with Racx. If that happened, I would no longer be the raving HP fan that I am. XD

I'm a firm believer in Hermione and Ron, even if he is a little immature. Besides, Hermione is mature enough for the both of them LOL, and being with her might help Ron some.

As for Harry, I think he and Ginny are great together.

Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods

That's what I meant, Harry and Ginny, not Hermioone and Draco! I always thought breaking up with Ginny was the stupidest thing he ever did. I think Rowling is losing her touch. The sixth book wasn't very good in my humble opinion.
Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Farquhar on December 06, 2005, 03:52:41 AM
Really? :o I thought it was one of the best in the series lol.

As for the breakup, I'm sure they'll be back together eventually.

Their relationship sort of reminds me of the Spiderman/Mary Jane situation. They both love each other, but  Spidey (Harry) knows that if any of his enemies (Voldemort) were to find out about Mary Jane (Ginny), they would surely go after her to get to him.

Title: Re: Muggles and Mudbloods
Post by: Deloria on December 06, 2005, 05:07:59 AM
Yeah and Spidey and Mary Jane divorced if I recall correctly.  :-\ Oh well. I still do think she's losing her touch but then I didn't like five that much becuase it didn't focus enough on Harry and there was no 'real' plot since that could have happened at any time.

I support a relationship that will last. If Draco doesn't respect Hermione (which he obviously doesn't) then it won't happen. :P But if Harry and Hermione got together, they'd care about each other, respect each other, and be able to have a mature, loving relationship.

if harry and hermione did get together, ginny would be really mad and so ends their frendship.  in the last book, i think that ron and hermione will get together, harry vanquishes voldemort, he and ginny get together, malfoy is completly left out and atempts to kill ginny, harry gets malfoy sent to azkaban, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Hermione and Ron could be interesting too, because of how different they are from each other. I suspected that they would fall for each other from the very beginning because of this. You find that characters in stories often don't end up together if they're similar.

After all, they say opposites attract.  :P

So what she writes next is anybodies guess. But she said on her site that she planed for Harry and Ginnie from the begining so...

She gets on AOL for school purposes. Also, the rest of the family can use the computer. :P Her parents don't let her on the computer for talking to people she doesn't know (like all of you ;P.) PS When I talk about the forum to my friends they sort of get annoyed. (I try to only tell the REALLY GOOD stories or make them short.) Indeed, imagine that one in the final series of books

Harry Potter in the South East of England, where I live, is one of those things which you either semi-enjoy or you hate it ("nancy boys read that!") I lean to the semi-enjoy catagory in the sense I can enjoy it for what it is but I disagree with the people who treat it in the same bracket as some of the great English literary works/authors; Paradise Lost, Canturbury Tales; Geoffery Chaucer etc... (I would say Lord of the Rings but that is controversial, it lacks the "ancient legacy" bit but is certainly as complex thus...I do not put it in that bracket) As a childrens book, It is vastly better than some of the tosh I have seen but the greatest literary work of ALL TIME, sorry...

(P.S I have made a point of reading every last HP book and analysing it in immense detail as part of an on-going bet with a HP loving mate of mine!)

Hey, sorry if I offended you, wasn't making a comment about what you said, just sending my own critical opinion, once again, sorry I have offended you or indeed, anyone.  :)

Besides, I do not think Harry Potter "stinks," it it definately one of the highest quality modern book series BUT I was just saying that some folk have said its the next best thing since sliced bread, ignoring the legacy of past books completely, and I have to disagree...just being an English critic!  :)

Besides, I do not think Harry Potter "stinks," it it definately one of the highest quality modern book series BUT I was just saying that some folk have said its the next best thing since sliced bread, ignoring the legacy of past books completely, and I have to disagree...just being an English critic!  :)
[/quote]
I have to agree with you here. Mark Twain, Emily Bronte, Jane Austen... JK just can't compete with those. They beat her in every way possible. Those are true classics. Everything else is just modern literature, most of it junk, but no where near classic stuff. I also have trouble believing JK will someday be given the Nobel Prize, she's just too fictionous. I also don't think all that much of her writing style, but that's just my hiumble oppinion and I'm not much of a judge at that.

Exactly, not to mention that the only reason people are reading them, is because they don't want to read or worry about the "real world", instead they wan't to be caught in JK's dream world of magic. In that sense the books are escapism and nothing else. In addition to the fact that no one wants to hear that the stock market's falling or that the dollar is a very unstable currency, or even worry about whether or not there's going to be a law against abortion soon (I know about Roe vs Wade, but I'm pretty sure the discussuion won't be over for a long time).

You remind me of me of that dude talking about religion and calling it an "opium for the masses." :P I, personally, read Harry Potter because I really like the writing style of Rowling and I can relate to the characters. I'm not going to say that it's better than the classics, but I will say that I enjoy it more. I DON'T enjoy it because I can escape into it.

I wont say that I don’t read the HP books to escape into every once in a while, but I don’t believe that all they are is escapism.  I, like Rosella, also read them for Rowling’s writing style and for the characters. Though it isn't a classic now, I believe that one day in the future the title of "classic" will be given to it.

So HP books are drugs? :P

People say the same thing about drugs, the truth is for some people it may be an escapism but for others it's the fact that they actually enjoy reading. I love the HP books, and I don't read them to escape but to kill time and read something enjoyable.

So in that sense all of the books you consider "classic"  are escapism too. In that statement you are saying that ALL books are escapism. I have a friend who reads A TON and he is connected with the "real world" more than anyone else I know. He reads HP and is an A student. And reading is "real world" just because you get sucked into a great book you are still just reading it in the "real world." Jafar's comment is the best so far and to me your statement is comparing books to hallucogeons.

AAAP:
I'm not saying all books are escapism, only the unrealistic ones. I'm also not saynig it happens to everyone.

Racx: HP books are not drugs but they do remove some people from reality. I'm just saying that some people are, indeed, removed from reality, and that those people I know that are removed from reality talk about HP, read all theHp's over and over again, and watch the movies in their spare time. Hence, I assumed a connection.

Jafar and Rosella: The G8 meeting was a meeting for most countries to discuss the stituation of global warming. It is not, by any means the l33t for the word "gate". It took place last summer.

I still don't see how it's getting warmer. We've had the most rain in South Australia in summer for 80 years. Also summer only just really kicked in over here and it isn't as hot as usual. So I personally think it's a load of bull.
I don't agree with the planet slowly degenerating because of the fall of Adam, but I agree that it is degenerating.

Hmm, have to disagree with the pair of you there, only because I have seen much data on the rapid degredation of Polar Ice caps and the effect on wildlife there. Gulf Stream degradation is also threatening to become a serious problem for Britain as well. Remember, global warming does not necessarily mean that you are going to live in a hotter climate; if the gulf stream failed through global warming, Britain would freeze! (the unusual amount of rain and lower temperatures where you are could also be a result of rising temperatures elsewhere in the ocean affecting current flow.)
Anyway, whatever the case, I think it is a good idea to get an "enviromentally aware" attitude into the world; after all, working with nature is often more productive and efficient than working against it!
As for the fall of Adam thing DD; probably would be wise not to put subjective opinions on religion into the forum, we all believe in different things, and we want to avoid nastiness. Besides, I believe global warming and degredation CAN be reversed with enough collective effort but I do mean collective and I do mean effort !

Anyway, in the spirit of the topic, I believe that Harry and Voldemort will die together; they have become so inter-linked in the course of the series that one almost seems unable to function without the other, in a perverse way I know! I just feel that if Harry could have a fittingly dramatic end, probably would be far more interesting from a story point of view (certainly would soften some of my harsh critisisms against the series for being so bold!)

However, if she wanted to do another series (?) then probably would not be wisest idea unless she can come up with a clever way of reviving him!

People need to start doing something about it! But still over here scientists are saying that the temperatures for Australia have rised since the early 1900's, when the temperatures have actually dropped. That's what I was mainly referring to in my post.
