Title: Pessimistic about KQ9 Completion
Post by: beernutts on October 11, 2002, 05:14:39 AM
I really hope I'm wrong, and I hope someone can alleviate my worries, but i'm pessimistic about KQ9 ever getting completed.  I have seen little progress about the game (except the story, which is usually the easiest part).  The hard work will come from the artwork and the programming, and i have seen so little of that.  Also, I keep hearing how big a game this will be, and the bigger the game, the longer it will take.  The longer it takes, the less interested the programmers/artist get.

I hope I'm wrong, but thats just how i see it.

I can understand your point of view but thats not the actual case.  The team is currently hard at work developing the first playable prototype demo of the game.  Now whether this will ever turn into an official game demo for the site I cannot say.  It will most likely be the stepping stone into full game production.  The story is actually the easiest thing to discuss on a forum, the art design is under wraps at the moment and programming is next to impossible to really talk about unless you want to start putting up computer algorithms.  Were working to put together an efficient pipeline so that game production will increase in the coming year.  So even though you can't see it all, the project is well underway and is  much more advanced that it has ever been in its history.

I'm also pessimistic about KQ9 ever being completed. It's because I'm a pessimist by nature.
It's also because Cesar keeps saying how big it's going to be, and someone said that they don't even have a working game engine as yet.
Maybe it's better to cut a few corners, compremise on graphics & plot and end up with a less elaborate but working game than make the "perfect game" that will never be finished?

it'll get done :)

The engine is not done in its totallitym but that's because we are still working on it. However, it works enough to the point where we have already seen it, and played a couple of test screens on it ;)

By the end of this year we'll have the first prototype demo. We are going in full production now but we are still sorting out how to do some stuff, so you may call it a Production test. Once we finish up with some of the details we are dealing with now, and we have a definite and final direction on the look of the final screens, we'll hire more team mebers and things will speed up. We are actually making a lot of progress, but as Pleassant Girl said, you just can't see it yet :)

BTW, will the demo be released to the general public?
I wouldn't be surprised if not.
After all, none of the other KQ's had playable demos, did they?
(except for MOE, but that's not really a KQ :P).

well, when you are having fun with something.... and you do it out of heart, yes it works without paying. besides, everybody works on their free time.

This demo will probably NOT be released, but at some point in the future we'll release something :)

Bloodyhonor,
We are working on our own engine from scratch. As for if there'll be maps in the game, we are still not sure. Given the fact this is not a Role-playing nor action, they may not be neccesary. No, the game won't look AT ALL like KQ8, but rather its precedetors, which are the real KQ :)

However, if you feel like helping us somehow, send us your applciation though the website.

Look at the bright side, waiting for the game will teach you patience. I have confidence in the kq staff, especially now that I've apparently joined them. I can understand why they'd keep most of the game under wraps...it's to be a surprise. The team is working hard, and their game will be fantastic.

Maybe if you talk to Cesar when he comes on here he'll help you. You can also fill out an application to join the team.

Back to the pessimism -

I've found through this site other fangames with sites and voluntary teams. All of those games were less than 50% completed, and still in production.
My question here is, if the last good adventure game was made at about '94 - '96 (KQ7), shouldn't there have been more games that are actually finished?  ???
The only ones I saw was the KQ1 remake from Tierra, which wasn't much in the sense that it's exactly like the SCI remake sierra made, and QFG 4.5, which is a disgusting little game that is completely ripped-off from the sierra games.  >:( >:(

This made me think that starting a game is easy, but finishing is very hard  ;D

Back to the Optimism -

Actually, I just know this game will be finished, such a proffesional website is a real proof! Any way! If Our heros Do happen to give up being heros, It will be in perfect timing to let ME take over and be the leader of this massive project!
I'll have finished school by then with all my degrees in PC running  + artwork.

Peasant Girl,  you are very, very naive if you think, because the website looks nice, the game will be finished.  Almost every single fan game started dies, and especially the ones with grandiose ideas and plans (ie kq9).

And why do you have to be finished with school in order to help out?  You won't learn stuff in school that will help on this project (except maybe programming, even that you can learn on your own).  I say join up and lend your hand!

I agree with Beernuts that the skill of your webdesigner has nothing to do with the progress of the project.

It's possible that there are professional teams with steady progress and a not-so-hot website because they prefer to spend their time on the development rather than the fanbase/community/site.

It's also possible that there are teams that have a massive website but hardly any progress at all since they spend 99% of their time telling people about it.

Let's say we are right in the middle.

However, since wqe are now in the production process while we still have a team in the designing, we are possibly going to release a last "Four Winds Newsletter, and let it rest for a while. However, you will still see it coming because it's a very important side to the structure of the game story, and we'll probably release it in a package as part of the documentation.

On the other hand, yes, we are a HUGE project with HUGE ideas. I'd only wish I had more time to work on this project. I've had trhe same love and passion for it as the first day, and what pleases me the most is seeing others with the same passion for it as me.

I assure you, this project won't die. I will not let it die, and I'm not the only one.

Good work Beernuts & Erpy!
More passimism is just what we need around here.
Passimists expect the worst and that's why they only get good surprises, and so say I!!!  :P

After joining the team and seeing all the work that has been done for the production of this game, I am very postive about it's release. The members of kq9 have done a fantastic job with writing, art, programing and music, and the samples you see here are only the tip of the iceberg. Don't ask me for any details or secrets of the game, cause my lips are sealed.  :-X  I was a bit worried that playing the game is ruined for me cause I know the story, but I think being a part of the story will make up for it.

As Cesar said, this side is in the middle of having a great website and game production. Just learn to be pateint, all good things take time.

Don't get too frustrated. I'm still working on my computer gaming masterpiece that I started at age 12.

I'm now 33.  ;D

Hi Aremisbree, are you new here? Welcome, I hope you stay for a while. I started writing the plot for my own computer game, but it got to long and detailed, and I decided to finish some other stories that I started instead. I'm still working on that novel of mine, about my world of Elysia.
