I'm extremely excited by the prospects of a new Kings Quest game, especially one in the tradition of the older ones. The Kings Quest series have always been my favourite video games, but it's impossible to find games that are actually like this anymore. Everything is all 3d and shootem up. I just downloaded the KQ8 demo and was very disappointed.
This game is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I guess I'll still have to wait though. Please keep up the good work.
In the mean time, can anyone reccomend any other newer games that I might enjoy, in the style of the classic RPG adventure type game? I don't wanna fight, just solve puzzles.
Thanks.
I can name non... =/
you are right, the companys turned all the RPGs into 3d shotem ups, not that I dont like 3d, actually I love it, it gives you a great feeling of inside the story, but take might and magic for example, 6 and 7 were great, 8 was s*** cuz the story was messed up and stuck in, and 9 turned into an online killem all, well I can say the same about baldur's gate, 1 was good, 2 was ok and the expansion of 2 suxed, man you start at level 18! bah...
There's a few Myst like games out there...
Syberia and Schizm are very very good, and the Longest Journey is a must have (though it's admittedly a couple years old, the graphics are fantabulous).
They're not quite in the style of the original KQ games, but the Longest Journey does have a lot more interaction with people.

Yeah I liked Baldur's gate for a little while. But it just got so tedious after a while, go here, get that, go back over there, pick up this. I know that's the essence of KQ as well, but for some reason it's much more fun. Plus, I really don't like the real time combat. I much prefer turn based combat.

Thanks, I'll have to check those out. I just got the KQ 1 & 2 from Tierra, that outta keep me busy for a bit. Plus I just got Dark Side of the Moon, although I have no idea how it is.
I think the last games I played that I really liked were Rise of the Dragon, and Under a Killer Moon... Now that's going back...
I haven't played the KQ1 remake, but Tierra's KQ2 remake was very good!
Check out: The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org) It's a great resource of old and new games that are, as they say, "underdogs" - games that went underappreciated at their time. They've got also got a TON of downloads of the games! You can search by title, random, genre, company, etc. Great place to look for stuff to spend your productive playing ;-)
For truly classic Adventure style games. They have re-made KQ1, and re-created KQ2 with a almost totally new plot. It's really done quite well.

I agree with bushie, schizm is kinda cool game.
and btw hippie, we are very happy you are glad with the idea of the project, this KQ9 is different than any other fan game proyect you might ever see around, its got a unique combination of new features and the very soul of KQ.
Welcome to the forums hippie, hope to see you around more :)
Thanks for all the info folks... It's been a long time since I had any fun playing video games (I suppose actually that should be a good thing). But there is nothing like loosing a few days of your life immersed in a cool interactive story, problem solving! I thought I was the only one who seemed to like "Adventure" games, but I'm very glad to find out there still are some of us in existence. I guess the biggest problem is that adventure games don't seem to generate the sales that gaming companies are looking for. A couple games I was looking at: Discworld Noir, Dark Side of the Moon, and I Want to Scream But Have no Mouth. Any good?
BTW - I was playing the Longest Journey demo, it looks AMAZING! Now I just gotta find the full version.
I think the KQ9 project looks great, and everything I've read here about it, and the sample screens look great. I think this will be one kick ass game when it is complete. I don't doubt that fans could do a better job than the game developers. Kudos for the team, in giving up your valuable time to aid the project. I'm sure your efforts will be *VERY* appreciated once the game is complete.
Unfortunatley I'm a lowly web developer, so I don't think I'd be much help in aiding the completion. I'm assuming it's C++ or something like that?
wow amazing, I think your going to love KQ9, its a game that has so much of it, the old sense of an adventure game, and yet the new 3d look so much better than MOE, and yeah I agree on you about the adventure games are not on the top sales anymore :(, if its not profitable its simply like not appealing enough or something, there are very few games on the market that could be appealing to fans of it.
About the games, I havent heard of any of those myself! hahaha, sorry Im so helpless there.
Regarding to all your nice comments of it, thanx a lot, its nice to hear people like the project and -whenever its ready- it would be very much appreciated :)
Its very difficult to do a free work, thats why this is the best thing that we could ever get, the support from fans of it. Thanks again :)
hahahaha! thats great, i think thats waaaay better than sleep like a cow after long hours of watch tv !! :)
at least you did something really cool, is that your eye or someone's eye? :)
(noisy say, noisy say ;D)
I think TV is a big waste of time! Lately I've been spending most of my time working on my web site (www.jamaholic.com (//www.jamaholic.com) ) and now playing a couple video games.
And yes that is indeed *my* eye.
Great site!
I must be "addicted" to music too, do you ever find a song where you just gotta play that one song in a loop for hours on end? The original version of Patty Griffin's "Top of the World" is my recent favorite. "I think I broke the wings on that little songbird, she's never gonna fly to the top of the world..."
It's a sad song but I like sad songs... I first heard it at my school's showing of the "v***** Monologues" play, that was a great play. ;D
nice site hippie!!!
The "v***** Monologues"...
How come when women talk about sex they're liberated, and when men talk about sex they're just being gross? :P
well I agree with katie, its somehow how you say it because I believe anyone can be gross related to it as well as clueless, it just takes time for you to I think first understand, to have that self confidence to talk about it and discuss about it, somehow, it doesnt matter guys or girls, they all get shy about this at some point.
and yeah! those monologues were really hilarious :P
I believe katie is right too, there is a radical difference about how girls and guys act toward sex too, I mean how they are seen about their sexual experiences. I agree with you totally there katie, it even think thats stupid!
LOL!! Oh, Knight, you would've had such a whacking for that one! :suffer: Haha! Very amusing:) Thanks for the agreement, Say! Girl power 8)
Okay, well, I'll paste some of these responses in a new thread call, umm.... I was about to say Adult conversation but that sounds like a dirty 800 number ad! "VMs, etc" how about that?
In the off-topic forum, of course.
HAHAHAH, oh knight, hahah your nuts :)
and yeah katie! :) open the thread!!!
I think it's already open, something like "VMs discussion".
The title's a bit obscure, but I posted there already.
oh yeah, I was there already now ;)
I posted too myself ;D
I've never seen v***** monologues but I read an exerpt from it in a book on women artists. I read where the male and female were arguing over washing the dishes, the man said he didn't have to wash dishes cause he was the man.

and the guys were maybe chuckling at most cause they didn't get it...
Because of this fact, I'm definitely not someone who has been or is inclined to go and watch the VM's. And no, I'm not going to post in that thread either, sorry. 8)
Um, I hope we haven't scared Cyberhippie away with our talk about the v***** monologues. Where is he?
He's still lurking about...
Actualy I'm lost in the middle of Arcadia right now. Got the Stone all together now, wahoo! I must be on the homestretch.
lol!! I thought we scared you away :)
No such luck! ;D
oh, hahahaha, what a quick reply, there you are! :)
not that we would like to kick you away or something but since you were quiet for a while I started to wonder where were you :)
nice to know your still around :)
hehe
Yup I'll be around. I'm happy to know there are others who enjoy adventure games as much as me!
Just finished the Longest Journey. It was a great game, but as usual the ending was kind of weak. You spend you much time on a game, it would be nice to have some sort of grand finale.
yeah, and you expect so much more when you actually enjoy it and take your time to play it and stuff...
lol at least you wait for a big big movie thing or something :)
Exactly!
I jsut fnished TLJ last night too!! Yeah, GREAT game, but the ending....really left way too many questions and was kinda not-so-ending-like.
I hereby promise to ensure a better one in KQ9!! ;-)
hehe, your on the hook now!
I wish there had been a little more resolution, April should have met up with her friends and sorted things out, etc. etc... Also another meeting with cortez and her 'friends' in Arcadia.
I think the kids she's telling her story to are kids or grandkids of her friends. ;)
Maybe we'll find that out in TLJ2. But, after all, it's just a story about 'The Longest Journey', of April (her) voyage in putting the Balance back in order. The story ended when it was put back together and a new Guardian was in its rightful place. Besides, have some imagination, think up your own continuation of the story! :D
I know, I know... I was just thinking of things they could have added in. I just felt the game ended rather abruptly that's all. It was missing something. The usual long ending movie bonnanza.
You did have access to the outtakes after finishing the story/game. Besides, if you've played Mask of Eternity before, you kind of get used to that kind of endings, so you don't notice anymore.
True, but....as outtakes go, I've seen better. The rubber ducky thing was amusing, though.
I agree CyberHippie...they show you all this info little by little in the game so that it makes sense, but then in the end, BOOM! they drop it on ya, without much explanation at all and then it's over! I was hoping for a bit more too. I did like how it was open to more games though, I'd love it if they made one!

??? How can a game be open to more games? ??? Please elaborate.
The ending left things open to a sequel. They talked about things going in during the next guardians reign. It's starting to fade already, but didn't they talk about the two worlds joining again?
BTW - How do you see those outakes? Somehow I missed that.
Allow me to cliarfy - it was open to there being a sequel, is what I meant.
After you finish the game, click on the"book of secrets" on the opening screen. it's the picture to the right of the diary.
I think you have to get something within the game for it to show up as well. Something about the plants near the tower of that guy who perceives time backwards...
Huh?! Plants near a tower where guy percieves time backwards? Oh, maybe you mean Abnaxas... I don't think I did anything with plants around there though.
Speaking of plants... What was the purpose of the fake leaf I had, that was outside April's room?
There must be something because I'm sure I clicked on the book of secrets and nothing happened...
Yeah, I wanted to know that too!! That and the picture of her friends, I never used that for anything either. Stupid red herrings....
You gotta use the fake leaf in Abnaxas' garden.
From eeggs.com:
1: start game
2: after you leave your room for the first time take a look at the plastic plant in the corner. Take a leaf.
3: continue play of game as normal until you are invited by Abnaxas, the creature who can see through time.
4: go to his house and plant the leaf in the garden beside the flowers, it should reference to it as fertile ground. If it the correct spot a plant will grow and you'll get a comment about the book of secrets has opened.
5: go to the title page and you will find an extra option to look through "the book of secrets"
Sweet!
Strange, I don't recall me ever planting the leaf and yet at the end I have always had access to the book containing the outtakes. Until I had finished the game it just 'beeped', I think, but afterwards I could access it, no leaf necessary.
Maybe the leaf-thing allows you to browse through the book before you have ended the game. Or maybe the book of secrets is yet another book than the book containing the outtakes?
No, the book with the outtakes is clearly labeled Book of Secrets. Do you get to see more stuff if you plant the leaf maybe?
copycat:
Did you ever plant the leaf in a previous game? Or did someone else play the game on your computer? That might be part of it.
Either that, or you got lucky and hit some sort of bug which opened the book for you without the leaf sequence.
oldbushie:
a) not as far as I can recall (and I must warn you my memory has lots of leaks)
b) No way, since that would mean a serious infringement of my privacy.
I seem to hit good bugs/glitches on several occasions. Must be because I'm still using good old Windows95 (OSR2). ;D
It can't just be a random thing, because I got it to open too without the leaf sequence. I loaned the game to a friend or I'd try to do the leaf sequence and see if that give syou extra stuff to look at.
Ahem...
You people should put on a spoiler warning or make a new thread about it when you post this things :-/
*hopes she won't remember any of this when playing the game*
Sorry, I hadn't even thought that it might be 'spoiling' it for someone.
:-[
Yeah, it's not exactly a spoiler into the game, but I suppose Abnaxas might be a slight spoiler...
Ah, well.
No more potential spoilers...
Is the Longest Jouney a computer game? I seem to have trouble finding good computer games in my area, and I'm not willing to pay a lot for them. I'll save up my money and read my books, and wait for Tierra and the other fangames to be finished. I was disapointed with the last game I bought.
IMO, TLJ is a great computer game. A few months ago I could still acqure replacement CD's from the UK (I had a faulty CD), so I'd think it'd still be available on-line
I'd like to find QFG on ebay. I've never played it, and it's a Sierra classic, it seems like a game I'd enjoy. I can't wait for Tierra and the other groups to finish their version of the game.
I've bought and played every QFG released, All of them are gems. In fact I have the original part one when it was called Hero's Quest. I loved the parser interface, Of course I started out on a parser, From my understanding those used to a point and click tend not to like the typing.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I kind of like the point and click because figuring out the right thing to type was sometimes just SO frustrating because if one word was off...oy!
Come to think of it, I kind of started in the earliest sort of point and click there was, with The Black Cauldron - it was choose an action of say, use and do, and picking the items in your inventory you wanted use. There was minimal typing in it. I prefer normal text parser to that though.
Welcome to the board!
Thanks :), When I started my First run into adventure gaming on my 8088 I didn't even have a mouse, I never knew a point and click game till around QFG3.
But then again, in parser-interface you could always 'look around' in the room you were in and get an idea of what was particular about that room. In pnc you just have to move your cursor around and and click on the various items. You can't get a general description anymore. :-/
Yes, LSL1 on XT! 8)
I liked to do naughty and crazy stuff when I got my old type-face computer games, I typed in cuss words, words to kill, kiss or kidnap the people in the games. I liked the responses when you typed in cusswords in kq3 and 4.
Yeah, typing in odd stuff is fun. Like typing in CHEAT on SQ2 to cheat (it doesn't work for me though, I wonder why), and Holy S*** to cheat at the slots in the origial SQ1.
And there's the imfamous KQ 2 one, WHAT IS GRAHAM LAST NAME. (many sites say FIRST instad of LAST, proof that people copy each other, although typing in FIRST instead of LAST DOES in fact generate the same response, but that isn't the point.
Also, try KISS HAGATHA and other such nonsene, you get odd responses! It's great!
:suffer: Those were so much fun. I like what happened when you tried to kill the monk. I liked the message you got when you clicked the net on Graham, (Tierra's kq2) but I wish he was into those "tie-up" games, then we could really have some fun. I'm naughty. *Looks around for a prince to kidnap.*
What was the message from asking what grahams last name was?
For some reason my current computer has issues installing the KQ collection. :-/
The reply you get is "Cracker" (Graham Cracker, get it?)
Oh, boo! That's a terrible joke. I'd laugh at it, but it's still terrible!
Just to be a pain, my new goal is to beat Takari to Royal Heir! haha!
And so you have, happy now? 8)
gosh, they fight like cats and rabbits!
oh wait, they are!
:P
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Which cat are you referring to? 8)
Cats and rabbits are gosh-darn-cute adorable creatures! I have a cat, and I found a rabbit that isn't as scared of people as most normal rabbits in my flowerbed. I was going out for a walk, and I was walking around the house, and I saw the little bunny. I was really close to him, I was surpised that he just stood there and looked at me instead of running away. My mom said she was watering the yard, she saw him and talked to him, and he still didn't run away. I used to have a wooded plot next door, the neiborhood developers cut it down and built a house, now I have new neighbors and the animals don't have anywhere to go.
Only problem is the cute little bunny will ruin our plants. I feel sorry for all the animals that are getting pushed out of their homes. Florida panthers are getting hurt the worst, their almost estinct.
Good lord, there are panthers in Florida? I've only heard of the alligators and crocodiles...
We have to find a better way for people and animals to coexist... Maybe treehouses?
Treehouses for panthers? I don't think so... :(
All they need, is a bit of space, just like the elephant and a whole lot of other (near extinct) animals. Unfortunately, humans move in to where they once roamed, they have nowhere to go, so it's bye bye and on the road to extinction even further. :'(
I suppose you're right... if people lived in treehouses the panthers would still be able to get them easily...
How about underground with sturdy glass roofs to see the sun?
For the humans or the panthers? 8)
