Title: TSL Walkthrough
Post by: DaFunk[BS] on June 09, 2006, 04:56:10 AM
Will there be a TSL Walkthrough for Shadows, The Two That Are One, Eternities Shortly after each one's Release?

No, but you can assume that one of the fans will make one soon after their release :P

Actually, I could be completely wrong...but I thought at one time Cesar was typing up a walk-through, and it was something around 100 pages...

*could be wrong* Don't hold me to that. :P

Actually, if you look over some of the previous Chatlogs (http://www.tsl-game.com/chat/), Cesar answered this question. :P

The team won't be developing any walkthroughs, that's up to the fans to do. :)

Hmmm...I was positive he had once said (to me, when we were talking) that he was working on a walkthrough, though I think it was only for him...not to be revealed to the public.

I could still be wrong though! Probably am! :P

Oh...  He developed them, but it was more for scripting purposes than for public ones.  By that, I mean they're not really in a nice format to release out, and rather than using hints it uses blatant spoilers. XD

So, that's why we'd prefer fans to write them up. :)

If you look at the game design documents that Al Lowe has put up on his website, you'll see that he does pretty much exactly the same thing.

Wow! ;D  Our design docs aren't nearly that nicely layed out. :P

I designed a few programming related ones that looked alright, but unfortunately I didn't continuously update it during actual implementation.  We may release them and others publicly one day, after the game is out. 8)

But to get back on-topic, I don't think the walkthroughs Cesar developed would be publicly released.  They would most likely be written by some of the hardcore TSL fans. ;)

I don't think putting a walkthrough on the site is the best idea. It's too easy. ;P

Something along the lines of a UHS file might be better.

I agree with Deloria.

I prefer UHS files because, when used properly, they only nudge you in the right direction.

It's too easy to read one sentence too far in a walkthrough like daventry's and spoil the game.

With UHS you have to specifically request too much information in order to get it.

I reference to KQ1 hints:
UHS might say, "Find a way to stop the dragon's fire."
  >Click here for "How to stop dragon's fire."
Daventry says, "Fill bucket with water and throw at dragon."

If I follow a walkthrough I am told how to win with max points, and may miss some alternate ways to win I could have come up with on my own.

Additionally, if I've completed a game with 95/100 points.
I want to see if I can find those 5 more points myself. (Hey, I get to play again! !!!) If after several replays of the game, I am still unsuccessful, then I might check a walkthrough to see what I missed.

The thing about that is that by now (after about 14-20 years), you should have found out how to accomplish at least the first six games with full points.  If not, you really need to check these out.

Besides, UHS files haven't always been "friendly" with me.  For one, in Wizardry 8, the UHS files hardly helped at all and at points became a hassle and the game left me and my brother wandering around the game world hopelessly searching for answers to supposedly simple puzzles/combat sequences.  Even by the endgame, I was left with more questions than answers.  >:(

That's why I prefer walkthroughs to UHS files.

Oh, and by the way, thanks for the links, Daventry.

Walkthoughs usually just ruin the fun in stuff ;P
Title: Re: TSL Walkthrough

Yeah, I know exactly what you guys are saying about walkthroughs.  Sometimes I want to read an explicit walkthrough line by line, because I just want to know how to get past a certain stage.  At other times, I just want something to give me a general hint in the right direction, rather than a blatant spoiler. :P

So, whichever fan(s) decide to make the TSL walkthrough, I highly suggest keeping those two things in mind.  Maybe even create two separate versions (ie. spoiler-filled and not).  I can assure you that if we ever choose a fan walkthrough to be the official TSL one, it would be a non-spoiler filled one. :suffer:

I doubt MS Word supports them. ;P

But seriously, we'll most likely create a new forum specifically for Hints once the game is out.  The obvious rule there would be any spoiler tag misuse would result in the post getting deleted. :P
For example using it like this, when there's no need other than it looking cool. XD
Well I was hoping for a walkthrough like this:
Green Ilse
Spoiler (mouse over to reveal):
Talk to Stick in Mud
Give Stick in Mud Mint(2)
Talk to Vines
Get Wall Shadow behind Vines(3)

As I said, people won't be able to add Spoiler tags to a Word document. :P  If they post spoilers in the forum, then sure, but a whole walkthrough posted in the forum with one tag, or even hundreds of tags is just not feasible, and will end up getting deleted. 8)

A walkthrough like that would look like and probably be used the same way as a UHS file... but not.  Why not use the spoiler tag idea?  ???  With a normal walkthrough, you'd most likely have to skim it and maybe accidentally read a huge spoiler and ruin the game.

I have an idea.   Why not have a walkthrough that tells the directions to solve puzzles, etc, in normal text, and have significant spoilers in spoiler tags?  This should please everyone looking for a hint or spoiler.

But what if you really want to solve a puzzle on your own?

Why not use the spoiler tag idea?  ???
Well because:
It can be annoying.
Why?
Because every line would have its own tag, like this.
Why is this a bad thing?
You can see how difficult it is moving your mouse just to read this.  And how tempting it is to just read all of them.

Can you imagine several hundreds of pages like this?  Or the whole walkthrough itself would be in one massive block.  It wouldn't make any sense either, because someone could just as easily create it on their own and upload it somewhere.
I would consider the above to be massive spoiler abuse.  The tag should only be used for a max of 2 or 3 times per post.

I mean HUGE, game-ending type spoilers.  NOT for every little hint or tip.
Title: Re: TSL Walkthrough
Post by: Raforever on June 13, 2006, 06:00:06 PM
Considering the spoiler tags "push" the rest of the page down when opened, large texts would leave anyone lost in the middle of the page after closing the spoiler :P

yet another reason to limit its use ;P

Just have an entire section of the forum set aside for hints. ;P Have a big sticky warning there.

Only stuff that reveals major plot points should be spoilerized in that case.

No walkthroughs are allowed to be pasted into a forum post, if that's what you mean. :P  The urls to them are of course allowed though. XD
