Title: Religion
Post by: Rosedragon on November 17, 2002, 08:47:12 AM
I've started this thread so we can discuss religion, or flame the bad stuff about religion to our heart's content. I am interested in knowing more about the laws of Israel, I'm a very curious person. Religious laws in the US....well, partial birth abortion was outlawed, so's human cloning, for which I am glad, but women can still get an abortion earlier in the trimester. Prayer is allowed in school as long as it is student lead and not endorsed by the teachers. it really depends on where you live, if your community is onservative or not. I live in a more conservative part of the US. Private school vouchers have been approved for student s of "failing" schools, public school where the test scores are not high enough. This means that the governemnt will pay to send a smart student to a private school, and most private schools are religious. The school system is obsessed with these national standardized tests, and if a certain percentage of the student s fail the test the school's fund smay be cut. I think they should prepare kids for real life instead of teaching them how to take tests, but I guess tests are a part of real life, at least they are now.

That is SO stupid! if anything, the funds to a failing school should be raised!!  ???

Don't even get me started on the Israeli education system  >:(.
There are religious schools that are funded by the state, and in which they only teach you the Jewish religion and no math or English or anything "secular", especially not science.
The result is that the people that graduate these schools can't find work even if they try. Most of them don't try anyway because straight afterwards the go to study at a "Yeshiva", which is also funded by the state. They study the same thing and get money from the state for studying there  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Those who do try to get a job (usually only if they leave the religion) find it hard to get a good one because of their lack of education, and I heard that some actually sued the state for giving them such poor education.

We all envy you!  ;D
Your country is what we in Israel would call Utopia  8)

I heard that Islam is getting stronger in Europe, and that in Franch, for example, there are already more musks than churches. Is that true also in your country?

That is horrible that they teach nothing but religion!  >:( English, math and science are needed a lot more than knowing all the commandments. Please tell me there are schools in Israel that do teach the basic educational subjects. English/grammar, math, science, history, etc.

I don't like religious education, because I believe religion should be taught in the home by the parents. Religious schools are often biased and slanted in their educational views, like some fundamentalist schools will not teach evolution.  Two guys from my church came by my house last wekk, and they were wondering why we haven't been going to church. I shared with them some of my views, and they gave me the same speech I was expecting about getting saved. They also loaned me some books, which was nice, the books my help air out the ocnfusion in my head.

In my town a preacher who is principal of a private school was put on trial recently and found guilty of child abuse for beating an eight year old girl as punnishment for lying and gossiping. I am upset because his church and school is supporting him instead of condemning him, and he may get a lighter sentence becasue he's a clergyman. I say he had no right to beat the girl, she had bruises on her that lasted for days after the spanking. I hate it when religion supports child abuse. He should go to jail and get the crap beaten out of him by the other prisoners.

I also think religion should be kept out of eduction, or at least not be the main thing about it.
The education in the religious sector keeps the people there from leaving the religion and getting out of their community, as it doesn't give them the skills to live in the outside world.  :(

Now we hear a lot about clergymen not only abusing children, but also sexually molesting them, but I thought nowdays the church condemns these people instead of supporting them  ???   Maybe it's because in that case it was "only" a beating and not something worse  >:( >:(

This preacher and his church are fundamentalists, and they believe what the bible says about punishing children, that sh$t about "spare the rod, spoil the child"
I hate to say it, but christianity has a great influence on child rearing, and this can lead to abuse. The bible does say that those who love their children will correct them, and in those days beating was the only form of correction. It all depends on what kind of christians the family is, whether they are fanatical or moderate. Some christians are excellent parents and child-rearers that supply a loving environment, while others believe in punishing children for minor things.

This is the 21st century, and I thinks it's time that religious people stop acting as if the bible was written for a modern audience, it was written for the people of that time.

What kind of opinion do people have of Jews?

One of my religion classes lecturer told us a true story that happened to him when he went to some little town somewhere in the states. He said that when he told the people there he was Jewish, they were very surprise. The reason - he didn't have any horns, and their preacher told them that Jews have horns.  ;D

I think it's strange that people in modern times bought this crap...   ::)

Hahah, those hicks most be really dumb to believe such crap. That's what you get for living in a little podunk town. What state was this in? I thought that christian clergymen have stopped demonizing jews, which is really wrong. People need to be more careful of believing what the preachers say,  a lot of it is for their own benefit, like when they ask for money.  :P

Well, one of the most common stereotypes I here of jews concerns money. Jews are seen as greedy, being tight busniessmen that try to make more money than what's honest. Other stereotypes.... I don't know, maybe the food they eat, the mothers that are controling and baby their children, Hannukah and others holidays all lead to stereotypes. Don't worry though, I have no stereotypes of jews.

You're right about the money part. We're all greedy bastards here  ::)
And I can testify that the mother thing is also true - I know, I've got one  ;)

The only weird thing about jews is that they like to live near train stations  ;D

in all big Belgian cities the jewish communities are located near a station  ;D
