Title: Re: Mask of Eternity - is it REALLY a KQ?
Post by: chinchinrox on September 09, 2002, 04:16:04 PM
I was so stoked when I found out KQ8 had been made!!  I bought it, took it home, installed it, started playing it, and was like  >:( >:( >:( >:( :'(  It was a clever but nasty move on Sierra's part, because it's one of those games I wouldn't have even considered buying if it didn't have the King's Quest title on it.  It infuriates me.  I found that it took away from the happy fairytale goodness of the previous games.  I agree with you Storm, that it is NOT a REAL KQ game and in no way is even close to being worthy of it's title!!!  DEATH TO MOE!!!

You can say you liked it, I wouldn't think less of you because of that...  ::)
It's not really that bad for an action game. :P

I have my own confession to make.  :o
I cheated on KQ1, KQ3 and KQ4!  :'(
The thing is, I had their solution even before I got the games.
My only excuse is that at the time I wasn't as good in English as I am now, and that I was young and too stupid to appriciate the fun in solving things yourself rather than just following instructions.   :(
KQ5, 6 & 7 I finished by myself, and about KQ2... I don't remember. I may have peeped. :)

BUT - and here I return to the original topic - I cheated on KQ8 maybe twice or three times, and I'm not going to apologize for it because I don't count it as a real KQ!!!
(And I only did it because I was getting really fed up with it at the end, and the thing take FOREVER to load the worlds, and my screen was too damn dark before I found there was a "gamma correction" option...). :-/

this turned into the confession topic now hahaha
dont worry storm we all cheat on games most of the times, i used to do it a lot too it doesnt means at all how much can you actually like a game, no need to come up with excuses or anything, the way i see it
it doesnt matters so dont feel bad about it  ;)

The problem is that I blame myself for depriving myself of the fun... :'(

By the way, Yom Kippor is next week so this is the best time of year for confessions (Jewish, remember?).  ;)

Now I'm trying to convince myself not to cheat on QFG2 that I just started playing!!  :-[

Everyone cheats sooner or later.  I cheated my way through half of KQ3, and I needed a few hints for QFG2.  KQ8 stumped me in 1 place and so did SQ6.  The rest I managed to figure out.  Oh except for KQ1, that one we got hints from friends, especially that dreaded gnome riddle, who the heck would think of flipping the alphabet backwards....hehe I love the riddle, its still cool today!

I cheated on EVERY KQ except 8!!!!!!!!
But i was LEETle and so.... very STUPID!
That's why i needed a cheat!

It still took me as long anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, so much honesty here, I just have to join in. :)

Yeah, I cheated at least once for every adventure game I ever played. I remember the days before the internet when it was either an expensive phone call, or those cool little hint books with the spoiler-proof blue transparancies.

The internet has surely made cheating so easy and excessable since those days. Its so hard not to look up an answer when they're all just a few clicks away. ::)

I agree, Im used to cheat on games too, from walkthroughs to cheat codes hehe  ::)
and yeah! internet only makes it easier and cheaper to cheat  on those games ;D

I dont think someone hasn't -ever- cheated on a game, seriously, we all even looked for a damn guide or something once ;)

hey nina! hahaha dont say that about yourself, cheating on a game does not makes you stupid at all or anything like that , in that case we all are because i do believe everyone cheated somehow ever in a game :)
is not bad look for a bit of help  ::)

COME ON PEOPLE!!!
Let's hear some more bad things about MOE!!
I'm starting to think there are actually people who like it... :(

I just wanted to note that the only funny thing in MOE is Connor's behavior after taking the few last mask pieces.
Did anybody else notice how he does all those fancy exercises while expecting to be attacked by a minion, only to be surprise anyway?  ;)

Too bad you didn't!  >:(
Mistakes should be erased, not perpetuated, and although Connor is in a bad movie, he is one of the elements that make it bad!
Besides, letting Connor into the KQ9 plot re-affirms the plot of MoE (with the flaws you already described).

Oh, if only I knew then... I bet I could have convinced you guys to see things my way!  :(

You'll find that MOE fits right in with the rest of the KQs when you play KQ9, what happened there had a purpose, it was not all in vain.

I agree with rich, this is about to give it another try to connor, not to bring back all the flaws on KQ8, really, is not as bad as it sounds

I smell a rip-off!!  >:(

NO NO NO!!! IT WILL NEVER FIT IN THERE!!!!  :o :o

Lately I've been hearing (reading) some forum members saying they like MoE!!!
I would like to invite them all in here so I can crash them down, step on them and laugh while doing it (in the most verbal and non-violent and non-offensive way, of course)  ::)

And no, I'm not tired of bashing MoE. I'll never be tired of pointing out the truth to those less enlightened  ;D

Storm a question: how do you feel about combat and violence in kq and video games? Did you have a problem with the fighting? I thought it was really gross when Connor kills the spriggot and blood starts pouring out of his mouth. Ewww!!! That was as different from kq7 as the north pole is far from the south pole. The ending really pissed me off, I was expecting Connor to meet Graham and be rewarded by him. The lack of history about Connor and Lucreto really bothered me, what is Lucreto's reason for destorying the mask, is he sick of being an archon or just wants to take over the universe? How does he become evil? Excuse me, excuse me, what's my motivation?
Title: Re: Mask of Eternity - is it REALLY a KQ?
Post by: Storm on October 28, 2002, 01:37:34 AM
EXACTLY!!!
MoE has too much sensless violence and too little reason!! >:(

I don't mind too much about violence in video games, because I usually don't play them. I do, however, mind it very much where it comes to the KQ series. It shouldn't have violence for the sake of violence like in MoE or all the other action games.

I also don't like adventure games where they make you fight in order to finish the game because I really suck at fighting  :P
My fighting technique is mainly "just punch the keys/mouse a lot until someone is dead..."  :P :P :P
If I want fighting, I just play RPGs...

hehe, that's something we got in common, I'm not so good at combat either, I played a video game at my friend's house and she totally kickced my ass. Right now I'm playing might&magic 6 and it's taking me forever! I don't know if I'll ever finnish the game, since I've replayed it from the begining twice because I kept messing up, but I'm doing better now.

I've just finished Might & Magic 6 a couple of months ago! my fighting technique really worked well there, and also the "run away and heal every 5 minutes" strategy.  ;D
It also took me forever, and I had to cheat to finish it.
I did manage to finish it without dying, but that's just because I loaded a game every time I did - I just hated seeing how many times I died on that list... :P

I'm trying to find that stupid hour glass of time, and I'm getting really pissed off with all the magicians and fire spirits I have tof ight. It's not fair! There's too many of them, and their liflines are too long. How do they expect me to beat all those bad guys? I wish I could just go in and grab the hourglass and leave without getting killed.

Ahh, I can hardly remember those distant days when I used to fear magicians...  ;D
Those stupid lifelines - you can never tell anything by them.  >:(

Dragonstar, MM6 is a very "loose" game - the order in which you do things usually doesn't matter, so you can come back to that place when you're stronger & better. BTW - where is the place you're in?

Another one of my strategy tips - for rooms full of strong monsters: go to the entrance of the room and then run like hell back into the empty room/corridor you came from.
If a monster spotted you it wil follow you into the empty room (you can see the little red dots following you if you use the "wizard's eye" spell) where you can kill it, having the numeric adventage.
If not, try again.
This is my simple "divide & conquer" tactic. It also works in open spaces but then you have to run more :P
I also have a more complicated method, that involves a long corridor along which you can run backwards, and the fact that mosters tend to accumulate adjacently from you, even through walls.  ;D

My brother's strategy in this game was using "strafe" but it was too slow for me. :D

My party was a knight, a paladin, a cleric and a sorcerer.

I figured you were at that island - it's the first place I saw fire elemental. I didn't manage to finish it the first time I was there - those pesky elementals hide in the corners of the ceiling and shoot at you, and they almost never leave the rooms!! either that, or maybe I finished it too early in the game and had to return and do it all over again at the proper time? I don't remember...  :-/

I'm glad you've found my tips useful!!!  ;D
Some other things I used in my strategy are the fact that monsters don't heal - well, not as fast as you anyway, and my special swift-air-strike, which you can only use if you have the "fly" spell. It basically means you fly fast over your enemies and shoot them for all you're worth while passing over them  ;D.
