Title: Squirrels
Post by: TakariFreak on September 21, 2002, 03:47:33 PM
We had a baby squirrel in my basement...again!  And my computer's down here!  But the trap my dad bought paid off (doesn't hurt them, just captures them so we can release them back outside.  The LAST one we caught, it was sleeping in my sister's blanket (which was about to be put in the wash)!!  Not to meantion we've had 2 bats in the house, and a female racoon we call "Raquel" who raids our garbage when she has a litter (the kits are sooo cute!!) she and her mate often raid the garbage at these times and because of the bungee cords, periodically get stuck IN the barrel!

We just caught a second squirrel the other day, and as I sit here and type this, I hear the banging and squeaking of another squirrel!  Augh!  I don't know how I'm going to get back upstairs!  with the first one last week, I turned off the comp, and ran like hell upstairs (and heard it crashing around because I had scared the living crap out of it in the process).

Any ideas on how to get them from comming in?  We've had the occasional one, but this is the THIRD Squirrel in a week!!  I wonder if a mamma is raising/protecting her little down here, the first was a baby, the second adult, and I'm not daring to open this door to see the third just yet...and the 2nd on we knew about because my parents saw it go down the chimney!

Squirrels in the house! You must live in the woods. I've had lizards and bugs in my house, even a snake in the pantry one time, but never squirrels, though there are plenty outside. Raccoons in the woods managed to get in our garbage cans, but not inside the house. Sounds like you have a zoo there. Where do you live?

I live in a quiet "rich people" neighborhood in nothreast Massachusetts.  There are woods behind my house, but they aren't very thick, from the second floor in my house, you can see a road behind the woods (we live on the top of a hill).  Lot of animals live there.  heck, we've had deer in the front yard before!

well, #3 is still here...we think.  We heard a few peeps yesterday, but nothing since.  We're getting the chimney re capped to smake it squirrel proof.  That's why i've been gone for a few days.  My compyter's in a room down in the basement, and I'm afraid to come down here with a killer squirrel.  we even had a window WIDE OPEN for him to leave, and he sat in the sill, and rqan bakc inside when he saw us! damn rodent...

Well, squirrels CAN be domesticated, so after a while of living in a house, they might not be afraid of the people anymore, and they could be attacked.  And if someone gets attacked, it rabies shots for all!  And who knows what else.

Say, only 3 squirrels?  We see them all the time!  I can't imagine what it would be like around here if we didn't have any squirrels.  We see all sorts of animals.  Rabbits, occasional deer, racoons, skunks, sometimes bats, heck we even had a wild turkey stroll through the backyard once...

There are a few forrest animals that can be domesticated.  When my mom was young, she told me a story about her and her siblings and neighbors had a squirrel (or was it a racoon?  can't remember) trained.  It used to fetch a slice of bread covered in peanut butter from them (or somthing very similar, I don't recall the exact story).

And "Raquel", our ocasion female racoon visitor, is not afraid of people.  Every summer, when she's pregnant or nursing, she raids ours and the neighbor's trash.  We even watch her from 5 feet away (but we're inside, the trash cans are bungee-corded to the deck railing).  Later on, she's bring her kits, and they are so cute!  Somewhere, we have a picture of them from a few years ago in the pool area, posing for the camera all in a line!

We live where it's not city nor country.  It's a quiet neighborhood.  The squirrels are country squirrels but are trained to avoid city traffic (one time, during band camp {no american pie references, please!}, or band instructor kept saying "don't be a country squirrel in city traffic!  you all look like bambi in headlights!)

I kind of live in a place like that, except the woods around my house are getting chopped down. :-[ I want more woods! Of course, they're so thick and tangled you can't walk in them, not like up north. And there's bugs, I hate mosquitos!

I feel sorry for the animals for getting pushed out of their homes by the humans, remember, they were there first!

Squirrels make REALLY scary noises! They sort of stick their teeth out and make this high pitched screech! Sounds a bit like a magpie but louder and screechier! I saw one the other day just sitting in a tree screeching its head off. And i also hate squirrels(the gray ones anyway) cus they killed virtually all of our red ones!!!

We only have the grey ones, no red ones (bit a few have a teeny bit  of red on the tail)

In fact, I never really even realized there were red ones!  I have the beanie babies squirrel and racoon.  The squirrl is brown/red, the racoon is grey and black.  HERE, the squirrels are all grey and all racoons are brown (with the stripes, of course)

Well the visitors that scare me in my garden are the Possums!!! :-X
Those little critters make it sound like someone is having a heart attack outside my window at 5:00 am!!
Or you could imagine someone is mowing the lawn!!! ;D

Occasionly a Koala will run across the drive or I'll bump into a Kangaroo in the back.....well that's not common for city living in AUs, but I live kind of out in the bush!! :)

We don't have woods in Australia (unless someone plant 'em), we have BUSH!  ;)

Austrailia!  I really want to go there someday, someone I know has been there before, and she LOVED it!

But no, I'm stuck in borring Massachusetts in the US...NH I think is better, luckily I live right on the border (Nh has better malls and there's no sales tax there!)

Yehh...I guess you would love it!

Australia is really pristine!! (lots of untouched wildlife and nature)....it's also really clean!! :-X

I've been to the US and loved it....but i still call Australia home!

Well you, up there, have one thing we don't have in Aus...excitement!! You find such a variety of people in the US you don't get here.

What does NH stand for?

Duh!  You Aussies wouldn't know what the US states abbreviations are!  NH is New Hampshire, the state just north of Massachusetts (and about 10 minutes away from me, the north part of my town is right on the border).

Hey, I went to a park about a week ago, and we walked down this nature trail. I saw a  hawk, lots of water birds, squirrels, lizards and gators. When we stopped for our picnic, we had some excitement. We stopped at a bench near a lake, and a gator was swimming in the lake, we thought he would go away, but then he came closer to the bank, so we grabbed our stuff and ran back to the SUV and chose a different place to picnic. My dad said that the gator had probably been fed by people before. Stupid d**n yankees feeding gators! Don't they know better? At least alligators aren't as aggressive as crocodiles. Do you have a problem with crocs where you live, Nina? I live in Florida, in case you didn't know.

Yep, Aus is full of Crocs! But they're no prob where I live.
Mostly up in WA (Western Australia) and the NOrthern Terrirtory!

Ever heard of the crocodile hunter? I've herd that our Aussie madman is an icon overseas!

Anyway, if our crocs eat anyone, it's usually the American tourists (some of whom must think Aus is just another fun park and not a real life hazard zone, when your in the bush) THey actually go SWimming! Even when there are signs warning against crocs!!!!! :o

Dumb asses, sounds like the idiots who feed alligators. They deserve to get eaten if they aren't more cautious. Don't people know the only safe place to swim is in a clean pool with chlorine and chemicals? A few beaches might be safe, but there are sharks, stingrays and jellyfish, and in the mountains streams and lakes you might have snakes. Well, alligators are not as aggressive as crocodiles, so I hear. I went to another wildlife place, and they had so many alligators hanging around you wouldn't believe it. Next to a photo gallery they had a pond with a lot of gators swimming around, and they were real tame, they wouldn't bother the people or bite them or anything. There was one lying in the grass close to where I was standing, I got as close as I dared and he didn't move or anything. One little kid was there with his parents, and he was scared, can't blame him.

Alligators are naturally afraid of people, only after they are fed and have constant contact with humans do they loose that fear, and might become aggressive. The Florida indians used to hunt alligators by ramming a pointed wooden pole up it's mouth, then killing it with their tomohawks. The hide and meat were very useful. Gators were endangered for a while, and it was illegal to hunt them because people overhunted them for the hide. Then their population soared and came back up after being protected for a while. I think controled hunting is allowed, and there are gator farms where people grow them for the meat and skins.
