I think I most likely speak for everyone in the peanut gallery when I say... w00t! ;D Looking forward to more cool sketches! (And I suspect this means we no longer have to torture Say. ;))

YAY!!! a sketch!!  ;D

It could be the sketch-deprivation speaking here, but IMO it's the the best sketch in the entire gallery  :D
Valanice looks very true to her KQ7 self, only way better and younger  ;)

We're not really torturing Say... we're just applying mild pressure  ::) and we can't quit that until she tells us what the GOOD NEWS are  ;)

Oldbushie - now that you are part of the team, you cannot post completed artwork unless it is approved by Rich or Cesar.  We like to keep control over what gets shown.

However, of course, you can post your colored Valanice.  She looks really good (I little bit purple, like she's undead, but that could just be my monitor).  But the assignments that you've been given cannot be posted to any forum (well, ask us first - there will be some things we'll want you to post and others we won't yet want you to post).

Sorry to be the drill sargent, but we've had some problems in the past with this and similar issues.

Thanks, Oldbushie.

Post by: Oldbushie on November 06, 2003, 11:46:17 AM
I understand, I only picked Valanice cuz she's already sketched and online and my submission was just a colored version of her. No worries, I won't release confidential documents/images. ;)

I'm very very good at keeping secrets. ;D

edit: I am posting the pic in the fanart section since I think it fits a little better in there.
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Say on November 06, 2003, 12:02:49 PM
er, mm yeah, I have to agree and get serious about that as mikey, since well yeah, there have been moments about that, I can only allow sketches from the game directly given from either Rich or Cesar, and they go to gallery anyways, they wouldnt go on the forum, if you want you can contribute your way on the fan gallery part, but still, you have to consult first with your deparment wether your allowed to publish it or not, as well as you might share info about the game you couldnt come post here :P
and omg you had better be good at keeping secrets... or I will kill ya!! :D

What do you mean by publish?

And what secrets are you referring to? I don't know of any secrets... ::)
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: mfortunato on November 06, 2003, 12:28:46 PM
Well, once you are a full member of the team, you will have access to certain properties that will give you massive insight to the game.  But if you leak it - I will send my cousin Vinnie over to "meet" you.  And it's not always a fun party when he comes over.
JK

Secrets?  We don't know no secrets here  ;D

Like the part where Cesar comes riding in on his teddy bear and saves Graham and Valanice from being blasted by an evil wizard!!!! ;)

I am seriously demented.  It's this forum.  It has done that to me.

Let me be the first to comment on the new Sketch of the Week  - the sketch of Edgar  ;D

I liked the face just fine, but that's about the only thing I liked. I didn't like the hair, the clothes look too formal and his waists are too thin, which gives him a somewhat girlish proportions  :P

Well, I don't want to say I'm disappointed, but I kinda sorta am  :-\
I guess it's just a matter of different views/visions  :-X

Well yeah thats the sketch for this week, Edgar, Im not disappointed myself, I do believe its quite accurate to what he is about imho, Im not calling the dude a girly careful, In fact I dont think he looks girlish at all, I do like it :)

There's more than one costume.  And I've always thought of Edgar as kind of girlish ;).
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Jeysie on November 09, 2003, 10:21:55 PM
Hmm. I dunno. I agree he seems a little thin, but the ponytail isn't really all that feminine. And I like the clothes, 'specially the cool boots. 'Sides, IMHO, Alex's outfit in KQ6 was more, er, fruity-looking, anyway. <G> These are just the sorta fancy garb you'd expect a high-class fella to wear.

He looks fine, as long as he's not wearing any makeup or posing in an odd way, he's not girlish.

Please - Alex looked totally fruity in that scarf.

"Dahlink!  What do you think of my scarf!  I bought it at Lohman's just the other day!  All the other girls are SO envious!"

And don't forget - do you realize how old Alex, Rosella and Edgar are?  I think they're 19 (or maybe now 21).

And I don't think Edgar looks feminine in that pic - but you should go back and look at him after he's been transformed to his human self in KQ4 - that's girlish, baby!  That's what I was talking about.

(falls over laughing)

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a warped mind. I was talking to my roomie after I got into the game, and I said something like, "You know, if the whole purpose of the game wasn't to rescue Cassima and get Alex married to her, I'd kinda... wonder... about the fellow a bit, with those clothes and stuff!" And he offered, "You know, I was gonna keep my mouth shut and not say anything, but now that you bring it up..." :suffer: I bet Valanice dresses Alex and Rosella, just to overcompensate for Graham's (lack of) fashion sense. ;D

Closer to 21, I think, but they're all still young 'uns, pretty much. :)

You don't know who Heath Ledger is?  It's not that surprising, actually.  He's an Australian actor.  He was in "A Knight's Tale" and in "10 Things I Hate About You" which I like to refer to as "10 Things I Hate About This Movie" because it was pretty bad.  But he's a good actor.  He was also in "The Patriot" with another Aussie, Mel Gibson :D.  He was recently in a movie called "The Order" which Amy and I wanted to see, but the reviews were so bad, we decided to skip it.

Hey Jon!

Not everyone on these forums are on the team.  These forums are open to the public so literally anyone can view them.  They're only discussing the art that's publicly visible in the Sketches Gallery.

The Yahoo Groups are private and are only visible to KQ9 team members.  That's why you have to watch what you post.  ;D

Oh yeah and about Edgar, I think he's meant to have a certain femininity to him as he is a FAIRY after all so if he had like stubble and scars and stuff it would kind of ruin the mood no? Well anyway I think its a great sketch and hopefully next time we see him he won't have a pony tail  :P
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Jeysie on November 15, 2003, 06:33:35 PM
I think Storm was commenting on his skinny waistline being feminine, not his facial features.

And I like the ponytail, although I admit it's mostly because I like short hair better on guys than long hair, and a ponytail is a decent compromise. ;)

Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: KatieHal on November 17, 2003, 09:36:49 AM
ahh, Cassima. I don't think I've seen this *particular* collage of her, but I personally prefer the center one and the profile shot....I don't particularly like how her face looks in the front on view, but I've said that to the artists before. It just seems....I dunno...too ovalish in an unnatural way. Maybe it's just me, I dunno.

But it is still good, and I really like that center one!

Now, can anyone guess whom she was based off of? (It's not hard if you look at her face!)
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Jeysie on November 17, 2003, 10:04:05 AM
Hee. Another sketch based off of a celebrity? ;) You could make a list, and we'd have the KQ9 team's casting call for a KQ movie!

OK, I'm just teasing. I don't have a guess to offer, though.

The oval thing... maybe her hairline is just a little too high? My own face is fairly oval (but with a slightly more sharply tapered lower half), so I'm not sure what to say.

It's a minor thing, but the preview pic in the "Sketch of the Week" section of the "Home" page could perhaps use an update. ;)

And lastly... was the Cassima sketch done by a different artist? It looks vaguely different than the other two. It could just be that the fact that it looks more "painted shaded" instead of "pencil shaded" is throwing my perception off.

Peace & Luv, Liz

I agree about the center sketch being the best of them.
Cassima looks very mature. I know she's supposed to have an "Arab look", but the bushie eyebrows are a bit too much  :P

I couldn't figure out who she's based on... can anyone solve this mystery?  ;)

Much prettier than Grace Kelly!?!?!??!  WHA?!?!??  Grace Kelly was GORGEOUS!!!!!!
But Jon's Rosella is perfect (and such a cutie :D).  I think his design will work better for the game than Grace Kelly anyway.  Rosella is more spunky than regal and so this look is PERFECT.

Anyway, it's time for you all to get your education in classic films ;). Watch "To Catch A Thief" and "Rear Window" and you will see how beautiful she was :D.  I'm enamoured, what can I say!  he he he

Hee. Well, I look forward to seeing what other "casting" you all have come with. :)

As for idle musings... well, I have a couple anyway. I know you guys were going for looks no matter how old or whatever the actor. But for people who could play it now... For King Graham... ironically enough, if you dig up screenshots of Robby Benson in his recent roles, he could pull of the look pretty well, I think. <G> And for Alexander, one online pal suggested Nicholas Brendon, and I think it fits. Of course I'm slightly biased, because I always thought Xander on Buffy was way cool. ;D

I love Xander!!!!  He's a great choice for Alex, actually!  He and I are very similar personality wise (I don't know about Nicholas himself, of course, I'm talking about Xander). I say that because I've had people come up to me and call me Xander - you can't tell from the hobbit pics, but apparently, I look like Nicolas Brendan.  Well, I did with shorter hair, anyway.  I'll see if I can find some "Nicholas Brendan type shots of me and post them on the ugly mug section.

Hey, Jeysie, did you see Psycho Beach Party?  It's hilarious.  I highly recommend it.  Mr. Brendan plays a surfer dude ;).  I'm not so sure about Robby Benson, though.  Sure, he's old enough now, but he doesn't have that rugged-adventure type look.

I admit, Mike, I don't know much about Grace Kelly nor have I seen anything she was in. But I think this Rosella is indeed better for our purposes.

I thought Alex in KQ9/Robby Benson was good.

For Alex, I don't remember who the actors were that we went through.  We did look at Robby Benson when he was younger - but I always thought that he looked a little vapid (sorry, Robby - I think you rock, but the still images of you from magazine covers make you look completely clueless - but then again, it wasn't your face the ladies were looking at now, was it ;)).

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to unveil Alex at this time.  Since you haven't seen the sketches of him yet.  Plus I'm not sure if the actor we chose is still the actor who is portraying him at this point.   I'm keeping you all in suspense, aren't I?

Well, he's not one of these actors:  Freddie Prince Jr. (ICK!), Brendan Frasier (whom I really like, but not as Alex), Luke Perry, Elijah Wood (although that would make an interesting casting choice - but he's a little androgynous for Alex), Shane West (although I like him in general - he was very funny in "Get Over It"), Colin Hanks, Tom Welling (he definitely looks the part of Clark Kent, though, doesn't he?), Nicholas Brendan (ah, Xander).  Need I go on?

Alexander is none other than....................ME!  MWA HAA HAA HAA HAA HAA HA!!!!!!!!!!

(I'm totally kidding, guys.)

True, but one thing I've found about bandwidth-limiting sites that are popular enough to reach said limit is that they have a tendency to be perpetually off-line, unless you're lucky. :P

Well, don't get me wrong, I like Edgar!  People make fun of him for being kidnapped all the time and stuff, and think he's a wuss.  Yes, he needs to STOP playing outside after dark..but still.  That pic makes him look girly, and sort of "gives in" to the belief of his "wussiness", which isn't a good thing...im not saying girls are wussy, but guys that look like girls tend to bee seen that way.

besides, fairy princes need to look more manly.  it's a law of the universe  :P

(edit:  I found an old topic where i DID call Edgar a wuss!  WTF was I on back then?  Now, he's right after Alex in my book!)

Hee. I understand what you're saying, Takari. However, considering the way he looked in KQ7, the KQ9 sketch is an improvement in the "wussiness" level, IMHO.

Besides, he's darn cute, anyway. And Storm's coloring experiments are almost enough to make me want to drool over the fellow as much as I do Alex. Almost. ;D

But yeah, I think they should at least make the poor fellow look like he's been *eating* something all this time. ;) I fear it's probably too late for the "Get a haircut, young man" suggestion, though. ;D

This is again, another original. He was supposed to be based from Joaquin Phoenix (villain in Gladiator), but he turned into an original.

And regarding the clothes, c'mon, he was king at 19. He can't be using the same clothes as a 60 years old King. It looks very kingly to me :)

Hey, I never said *that* either. Alex in funky stereotypical King's robes definitely wouldn't work. :P

Seriously, Alex strikes me as the type to let his emotions get the better of his judgement, so I could imagine him going off and doing something ill-advised out of that, and the fact that, I mean the fellow had what, two years training on how to be royalty at best? The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, after all. As long as you don't make him OOC, I think I'd be more intrigued to see what you do to the poor fellow, instead of hating him. Nope. Not kingly. Maybe it's his posture, or the belt, or the boots, or the fact thats it's so very tight, but his outfit still strikes me more as one of a gaudy guard or soldier than a king's ::)

Why would you think that? I don't recall Alex ever being described as any kind of impulsive, or making rush decisions based on his emotions. Plus, he's diplomatic, just, kind, resourceful and well-travelled - why would he make a worse king than someone who spent all his life in a cusy palace "training for royalty"? Remember the king & queen of The Green Isles found him fit rule their land... that has to count for something  :-\

I think the hair's a big part of it... you can't sport that sort of haircut with those sort of features without looking like you just came off of patrol duty somewhere.

Are you kidding? The fact that he was willing to go through all the KQ6 trouble to begin with for a girl he barely met says volumes about the matter. :suffer:

Seriously... I suppose "impulsive" might be the wrong word... "single-minded" might be better. The conversation with the Druids comes to mind... the Arch Druid pretty much bluntly states he thinks Alex is insane to trudge off on a side trip based on rumor, half-fact, and two unknown people who may or may not be able to help.

But what struck me more is his conversations with Cassima. He's willing to try to break down the wall to get her out... she's the voice of calm, saying, "Hey, we're two people in a place full of enemies... the direct approach isn't going to get anywhere."

Of course, I think the most telling is where he states about finding someway to get her out and essentially run away with her, and she retorts, "How? I cannot fit through the wall! Besides, what about my people? How can I leave them with the Vizier?"

I never said he'd make a worse king... he certainly does have the personality to be a good king. But if you don't know entirely what you're doing, sometimes you can do something out of purely good intentions that seems like a good idea... only to find out that thanks to not knowing completely about the situation, it was a really rotten idea. It depends on how you look at it, really. You might as well say those actions show he's brave, determined and follows his heart  ;)

Mmm. Actually, my first thought was that he maybe looks a little too old... don't forget, Alex is only 20 or 21 at the oldest.

Edit: Mmmmmmm... OK, so that's assuming that KQ9 doesn't take place very long after KQ7 (no idea how much time MOE might have taken up). Still, to my eye, the sketch makes Alex look like he's in his mid-to-late 20s, so there'd have to be an interval of 4 or more years to match up with my perception... or I could just be nuts. It's happened before.

I agree the face doesn't quite look like his KQ6 self, but it's close enough to pass as a "real-i-fication" attempt. After all, the KQ9 Edgar doesn't look entirely like *his* KQ4 or KQ7 selves...

But now that you put the idea in my mind, I could picture swapping Alex in that pic into a stereotypical SF jumpsuit-and-boots getup on a starship somewhere... er, uh, wait, that's like 23rd century. Well, close enough.

I know you asked Jeysie, but I had to look it up anyway so:

QuoteYMMV:
Abbreviation for Your Mileage May Vary [from the standard disclaimer attached to EPA mileage ratings by American car manufacturers]
1. A ritual warning often found in Unix freeware distributions. Translates roughly as "Hey, I tried to write this portably, but who knows what'll happen on your system?"
2. More generally, a qualifier attached to advice. "I find that sending flowers works well, but your mileage may vary."

Quote from: KatieHal on December 17, 2003, 01:17:49 PMRegarding the first part: Hmm..well, I could imagine her hesitation in KQ4 to be partially due to the fact her father *JUST* had a heart attack. I mean, what if he died while she was gone and she never got to say goodbye? In the hours previous to that proposition by Genesta, Rosella's life was totally turned around. She was nearly eaten by a dragon, then rescued by the twin brother she'd never met, then Graham was about to determine who his heir would be, and then he had a heart attack and Death was just sort of chilling at the door! Taking a moment to think about breathing  at that point doesn't seem too out of line. And hey Lolotte was creepy ;-)

Come on, KatieHal, you must admit there's a difference. Going on a quest to an unknown place to save your father is brave. Jumping into a magical pool without considering the consequences just because you decided your life is boring isn't - it's downright foolish. No wonder some people think she's ditsy  :P

And if you're going to say it's the hardships and the danger that made her more prudent & composed in KQ4, let me remind you she did almost died a couple of times in KQ7 without loosing her cheerful disposition  ;)

Er, sorry... I tend to throw acronyms around a little too freely at times. I meant YMMV as along the lines of "This is what I got out of it... your thought process may differ." :)

I agree the discrepancy between KQ4 Rosella and KQ7 Rosella is a bit odd... but it exists nonetheless. Maybe it's some of the things Katie said. Maybe knowing that she managed to survive one adventure gave her a burst of confidence for her second... (and made her more eager to have a second, for that matter). Maybe finally having her brother home just improved her disposition. ;D Unfortunately, it seems he wasn't around long enough for some of his rationality to rub off on her... or for some of her spunky cheer to rub off on him. ;)

I like Rosella, and as it stands, she'd make a great travelling adventurer-type. (Rosella: Warrior Princess?) But if she's going to be a good *queen* someday, not to mention a good partner for Edgar, I think she needs a small dose of reality to give her back a touch of that reason and caution from her KQ4 days. Just a touch... wouldn't want her to become boring! ;)

Oh, one cannot doubt there is a difference, Storm! I was just trying to draw a rationalization for it, since it exists. Make up the reasons for such, etc etc.

So now she laughs in the face of danger since she got away with it the first time. SHe lived to save her dad, and now thinks she's invincible! How 'bout that?  ;D

After all "Gwydion" doesn't have any problems buying an ale in the Llewdor pub. :D
Hey, where I come from the legal drinking age is 18... and Gwydion would probably pass for that  ;)

/me gets a mental image of playing KQ3 with the barmaid answering "buy ale" with "Can I see your ID please?"  :P

Jump into water to escape discussing marriage with mom - HELL YES!!

Drinking age - I doubt there really was/is one in KQ. Medieval times didn't really have one either, except maybe "when you're tall enough to see over the bar"  ;D

Alex's age in KQ3 - distinctly 17. The guidebook that comes with the game clearly says that Mannanan kills his slaves when they reach 18 to avoid them ever becoming men and thinking for themselves. It then says his latest slave is fast-approaching that age, so we know Alex is just shy of 18 in KQ3, not actually 18 yet.

And yeah! New week, where's our new sketch??  :P

You know, I forgot to mention that I could definitely feel Rosella's pain in the KQ7 intro. She's lucky that her mother is (presumably) not Catholic... otherwise Valanice would have been trying to pawn her off on *every* male, including the shoeshine boy, the stablehand, and the town blacksmith apprentice. ...oh, and she'd also be going around complaining, "I'm not getting any younger, you know... I want to hear the sound of lots of little feet pattering about the castle before I die!"

Not that this in any way resembles any of my relatives. Nope.

I'm suddenly reminded of Guybrush Threepwood's many failed attempts to buy grog... :suffer:

Heheh. :P

Nah, it's just that where the land meets the water's edge the perspective looks a bit like an optical illusion. Are those dark spots the tops of small mounds or the bottoms of small valleys?
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Yonkey on January 26, 2004, 07:48:31 PM
I think that's the sand from the shore.   ;D
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Oldbushie on January 26, 2004, 10:06:07 PM
I *know* it's sand, I just don't know if the sand is in hills near the edge or little dips in the shoreline. ;) At any rate, once it's colored then it'll make sense to me. ;)
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Storm on January 27, 2004, 07:03:07 AM
Don't knock Bushie! I also thought that part was a bit strange... couldn't figure what those dark spots are  :-\

Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Yonkey on January 27, 2004, 08:38:46 AM
Ohhhh now I see what you're talking about Bushie (the optical illusion)!  I just saw the pic as waves splashing on a beach shore.  I don't see the spots as valleys, but just dark sand at the water's edge.   :)

I thought the same thing...it's like a dummy face...

Her head is a little too small in proportion to her body, IMO.  Im not an art expert, but it seems like her head doesn't "fit" with her body...
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week

I see your point Say, but still!  Artwork in games is suppsoed to be perfect!  It's not real!  lol  :P  But maybe her hard looks so small because of her pose as well...after lookint at it again, I think if she was re-drawn wit her amrs at her side, that her head would look okay

haha, Say, I think Takari meant that the size of her head didn't fit with the size of the body type of proportion....not hey why isn't she super skinny proportion  :D
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Say on February 05, 2004, 09:02:48 AM
well, I was speaking of proportions indeed, not weight, when I said torso bigger than legs... I dont know what you meant by that lol but I didn't mean weight.

you would be amazed what you get to notice on observation, I'm an ilustrator as well, that's why I tell you its not as obvious as it should be, yet it is true.
Title: Re:Sketch of the Week
Post by: Storm on February 05, 2004, 01:02:59 PM
I personally don't see anything wrong with the body proportions. It's the face close-up that looks a bit odd - not enough lines or something... of course, that's probably because it's just a sketch  ;)
I like the hairstyle... looks kinda modern  :)
