Post by: MangoMercury on November 30, 2006, 11:53:18 AM

train a is going north at 55mph.  train B is going east at 44mph.  assuming that this is on planet gluron, whis is cubic and has a side length of 500 billion miles and a gravity the same as the earth's and the trains are 75 thousand miles apart at the begining, when will the trains crash into the fire hydrant?

go to the netherland on holiday and travel from tow to tow by TRAIN.

another smart plan of the railroad company:
When a train is more than 15 minutes late it isn't late because they say it didn't drove. Smart trick to raise rate of trains that drive on time.

Trains
The trains float softly through the meadow lighting on a lilly leaf
The trains are big and cool and shiny but not as cool as mote's teef
The trains climb moutains and sour to new hieghts
They dance and prance in gilded tights
The trains complain of lack of coal
Of times of new, and times of old
The trains they think and feel and die
and when they die the trains do cry
But lilting tears, that echo throughout
Ne'er cease to bring trains back and shout
"Hooray! Hooray! You've saved me today!"
"You brave little train with smoke stacks, I pray"
"That you use your powers for the good of all men"
"and someday save other trains again."
With that the little train was happier than e'er
He was warm with joy like a kitten in a sweater.
He spread that joy all over the lands,
Through words, and actions, though he had no hands
Someday you may see him chugg-a-luggin through the woods
With a merry smile and a sack full of goods
He'll wink at you, and you'll wink back.
And as he chugs into the sunset with a clickity clack.

(some) TRAIN drivers have been on strike Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Guess why... ::) :P
I need to cross some TRAIN tracks every day. If I pass it before quarter past the hour, I shouldn't have to wait. If I pass it from quarter past the hour to 15 minutes later, there's a big chance I'll get stuck waiting for a TRAIN to pass.
A few weeks ago I had to wait for three trains passing, and there were only two tracks.
It's been a while since I last rode the TRAIN... ::)
Belgium is the country with the densest railroad-tracks, if you get my drift, apparently. ;D

Oh, and technically the rule is:

Say nothing in this thread but the word train.

So, if ONLY the word train is allowed, then I'm not the only one who's broken the rule.

You forget the principal of laziness whereby I'm too lazy to quote the rule but rather referred to how I felt the rules had been applied... much like how the US Constitution is never referenced literally so much as "I think the founding fathers meant this..." (seriously, it's amazing the credit we give them for being intelligent capable people and yet constantly say that we know what they were trying to say better than they were able to communicate ::))...which isn't to say it's a "good" thing... it's just a common and sloppy and lazy thing...

The Tube was actually pretty nice compared to the crappy subways we have around here. :P  I think it was only cramped & crowded during rush hour, but that's the same anywhere you go.

The Heathrow Connect train was much better though.  And the Eurorail ruled! XD

They are for most intents and purposes trains (I say "most" because there are always those people who like to argue who would argue that they are not trains with the intention being to argue... and so for such intentions, we'll just cut them off with "most" :P)

How many trains does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Title: Re: The TRAIN thread
Post by: Delling on April 22, 2008, 01:38:26 PM
None... trains can't possibly screw in a light bulb... their turn radius is too enormous!... now given a near-circular track and the assistance of a mechanical arm... we could get it done with one... it may take more depending on the terrain... but then we would also need additional mechanical arms and it would be a problem...

Sounds complicated. At this point I would be asking how many light bulbs it would take to successfully screw one in without breaking it. :-X

Title: Re: The TRAIN thread

Assuming the terrain had at least one point where the arm could reach it and turn it even a little, you could in theory still do it with one by just having the arm release the bulb when it moved away from it. That would remove the need for a circular track and multiple trains, though you might have to make a lot of circuits. :)

I think there is an Amtrak route between Grand Rapids and Chicago but that's about it. :P Trains are not used that much in the US, at least not for people.

EDIT: When I say US I mean the Midwest US, which is the only part I am very familiar with. The East Coast or California might be a whole different kettle of fish.
Title: Re: The TRAIN thread
Post by: icarus on May 05, 2008, 09:47:32 AM
thats treu. In the US you hardly find any trains. Only metro/subway. If I move there I have lots of work to do by creating a railroad network to conect all the cities/states.
Title: Re: The TRAIN thread
Post by: PirateKingChris on May 05, 2008, 01:19:33 PM
Alas that's the problem icarus, civilization is built up in such a way in my home state of NJ there's no room to put in a decent system where you can take the train everywhere you wanna go. There's about 6 different lines here and they don't all connect so generally I find it impossible to use it to get where they go. And some places you can't get to by train at ALL. I do however always use the train to get to NYC and the subway there to get all around.
Title: Re: The TRAIN thread
Post by: icarus on May 05, 2008, 01:27:25 PM
they could always make the railroad underground in the city and outside the sity above the ground. The trouble is the enourmous cost to drill holes/tunnels for the train.
Title: Re: The TRAIN thread
Post by: PirateKingChris on May 05, 2008, 01:35:32 PM
WOW, I can just imagine the cost to put the train in the entire state underground. I don't live in a city and generally wouldn't use the TRAIN here to go to cities. There's towns I'd like to be able to get to by TRAIN, but can't.

When you good nights have been said
And you are lying in bed
With the covers pulled up tight
And though you count every sheep
You get the feeling that sleep
Is going to stay away tonight.
That's when you hear it coming
That is when you hear the humming of the
Starlight Express, Starlight Express,
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.
Want you to take me away
But bring me home before daylight
And in the time between
Take me to everywhere
But don't abandon me there
Just want to say I've been.
I believe in you completely
Though I may be dreaming sweetly of the
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.
And if you're there
And if you know
Then show me which way
I should go.
Starlight Express, Starlight Express,
Are you real, yes or no?
Starlight Express, answer me yes.
I don't want you to go.

If you turn the head car, and then turn it again really fast so that the second car doesn't get a chance to finish turning, that second car, and all the ones following it, never do the second turn and go out of control, if that makes any sense at all.

My group's doing a puzzle/adventure game. The story is you're shipwrecked on an island that's part of an archipelago, and you have to get the materials you need to build a raft to get to the next island by playing the mini-games. Each island requires a bigger boat to get to the next island.

So far we have:
(I ended up doing the graphics, I can't draw people worth anything XD)

When you run into the bamboo, you get to play tic tac toe:

If you win, you get bamboo put into your inventory.

We're writing the engine this game runs on, and after we finish this big game we have to write a smaller, much quicker game that runs off the same engine to show that you can use the engine to write different games.
It's been a lot of work, but it's a fun class and I've learned a lot already.

We're using C# and XNA.

It's not compiled, huh? Will it run on the Express version of Studio? This is the first I've heard of XNA ("XNA's Not Acronymed"  ;D).

I took a computer programming class in college, but it was pretty lame. It was mostly FORTRAN (in which lines are limited to 80 characters because that was the width of punch cards!), then some Pascal, and then they talked about C for a couple of class periods.

Indeed, 'tis quite annoying. You have to use each spell a myriad of times before it is even useful. You spend more time TRAINing than playing the actual game. :P I'm quite glad they got rid of the system after that game.
