Title: New Screenshots!
Post by: Yonkey on December 26, 2006, 09:59:27 AM
The Silver Lining Development Team would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays and have a gift for all of you.  Here are two screenshots taken straight from the game! XD  But rather than me describing what they're about, let's try something different.  YOU describe them! :P

In the first screenshot, tell us what you think Lord Azure is telling Lady Ariel.  In the second screenshot, tell us where you think Graham is, and what he's doing there! ;D

UPDATE:
We recently held a Book Title contest where you had to choose the title Rosella would use for her auto-biography.  There were so many excellent entries that we decided on having three winners, all of which deserved a really good prize.  The winners got a sneak peak at the screenshot below:

:o The latter strikes me as the residence of a nymph or fae perhaps. She looks kind of familiar, but I can't quite tell from whence. :-\

EDIT: I know I can't be the first to notice this, but there's literally a ton of new artwork in the media section. :D

The circle with odd signs drawn on it and candles around it has long been a sign of black magic.  What the people are saying to each other is beyond my ability to guess, I have no context at all.  :P

I was thinking that was the former hag's home in KQV. :P And that person on the wall makes me think of Dahlia for some reason (though I know that's not the case :)). XD

1. "Do you really think we can trust this guy? After all, wasn't he the one that ..." (there may be a variety of reasons why he invokes their suspicion -- people are often distrustful of things they don't understand, and rulers are particularly leery of anything that threatens their power. It is not unusual that they tend to have a dislike for bad news and often the bearer of the bad news. Or perhaps it could be guilt by association. He is known to associate with an outcast, someone who has proven himself (or herself) unworthy or even disloyal (falsely accused of course). An eccentric character who lives in the forest perhaps in a tree house or underneath the tree. Part of the quest would involve restoring his or her honor. Before he or she will help, Graham must do something to win their trust.

2. He is in a castle, or underneath it. Something is hidden in the castle which he must discover. The puzzle could involve having to step on the letters in the proper sequence to spell the name of the person in the photo on the wall (of course the name would not one that everyone knows the person by--it could be their real name hidden since birth for some mysterious reason, or a name that corresponds to their secret identity, perhaps a wizard). Maybe that photo on the wall could even have something to do with the outcast person mentioned above.

Wow. Remind me to start coming back here! I've been so busy with.... Fine, I'll be honest here... I've been neglecting this site, and Deloria's for that matter... I've been so busy being so selfish with my christmas gifts, movies and even my Wii that I've forgotten to come here... But my late seasonal gift is my presence. (Insert name of holiday here) isn't (Insert name of holiday here) without a community to share it with. I just got the e-mail now, and I have to admit, that this project is ambitious to the extreme, and I wish the team members well on their journey. I realize that I may never find my way on the team, as so much time has passed, but whether I do or not, this project will always be immortalized within me. Your work shall never be forgotten. On this, I swear, and thou shalt always be within(ith) my heart, and my memories. Amazing screens, which make me even more excited now for the game! To all who may read this, I wish you all a happy new year and a late season's greetings! I may not have been here to share the memories with you all, but the over-all experience has been incredible. Such a community deserves a right fate, and that fate should be deserving of you; Whether that fate be fame and fortune (Or fame in this case, as the project at this point is non-profit) or it be rock bottom, but whatever the overall fate, I know in my heart that TSL WILL come out, and with positive results.   I can tell deep within myself that this be true.

Also, remind me to check the media section of the site soon! XD

Cheers, and happy new year from DD, or Daventry D'ark, or Dark Daventry if you prefer!

I'm pretty sure it has long been a sign of the zodiac, since it has zodiac signs painted on it :scholar: Besides, the practitioners of black magic usually use a pentagram (or were those the satanists? I forget).

Happy Holidays everyone! ;-D

1. "The case made by the eminent father of our wise king, as well as that of the stranger known only as Tribe, must compel us to action. The one known as Cedric will be cast into the Labyrinth immediately. If I can still hear his irritating voice by nightfall, we'll fill the place with killer wasps"

2. "What is this symbol here? A snake...no, a POISONOUS snake! Cedric isn't just a pawn of the Black Cloak Society. Cedric IS the Black Cloak Society. I should have known when I first looked into his eyes and saw pure evil. I was blinded by fear for my family and allowed myself to be led into an obvious trap, one I got out of purely by luck. But now the rest of the world won't be so lucky if I can't stop him"

(EDIT: This thread is getting a lot of guest views. Is someone spreading the word to the community?)

Screenshot 1: Lord Azure: "Honey I swear I didn't do it! Don't listen to what this human has to say! Now put down the dagger... "

Screenshot 2: I think hope's in a tree. I have to agree and say it might be the hags house from KQ 5, tough it's quite cleaned up. Maybe another hag or a nymph has laid claim to it?

"Besides, the practitioners of black magic usually use a pentagram (or were those the satanists? I forget)." And just for some clarity, using the symbol of the pentagram strictly for black magic is a Hollywood blooper that was encouraged by people who didn't know any better. In pagan religions its a symbol of the Horned God. Some Wiccans also use it to symbolize the unity in the 4 Elements (and in my case it includes Spirit as a focal point). And as any religion can be used for good or ill, the pentagram can be used for either.  Sorry... it's a personal pet peeve of mine when people say the pentagram/pentacle are strictly evil.

well, wiccans first used the pentagram--closed or open--in peaceful rituals of their own.  christians later adopted it claiming anyone who used it beyond the way they used it was black magic and evil. then a really ignorant, confused christian--named anton lavey--later adopted it, but placed it upside down.  oh yes, there are many symbols in the library or sacred geometry. :)  if you're interested: www.sangraal.com

1. "Well, I know he's only human, but his son did impress the Oracle... maybe he can help us."

2. It looks to me like maybe we finally get to see inside the tree of one of the druids on the Island of Mists.  I could be wrong, but that is what I immediately thought of, and was quite surprised that no one else said this.  Of course, maybe no one else said this because I'm wrong.

Hi, this is my first posting, but I wanted credit if I was the slightest bit right about either of those guesses.   ;D

Well I'll try for the first one lord Azure is asking Lady Ariel
Is this guy in front of me the real King Graham or just a peasant that need a dificult quest he'll probaly not succeed at.  XD
(who doesn't know the royal family)

The second one is made inside a house made out of wood, thus I think it's a treehouse.
But I don't know anymore in which kq-game I've seen it before.
But, the anwser to the first one is temerarely enough for me. :D

First picture:

Lady Ariel: Honey, he gave us a fruitcake for Christmas. I think we should return the honor by having him eat it.  And don't give him any milk, either.

Second picture:

Graham: Oh no, not another puzzle with buttons and weird symbols. I thought I left this behind in King's Quest 5.  Cedric, I want you to go and sit in the center while I see what happens.

The second picture looks like a puzzle with astrology symbols really...one of them is even broken off.

Those symbols are zodiac-type markings, and there are 12 of them; I didn't bother to check if the colors on each one match to the elements for those zodiacs, like aries being fire so a red candle on it.

Nope.  Aries has a blue, and aquarius (obviously water) has a red.  But it's still zodiac.

I think you guys should work on the textures. They look bland/dull. Especially graham and the other characters. Since there is barely any lighting in the game, you should paint on a lot more shading, to approximate the look.

Perhaps make more dramatic lighting, too. (Of course this can be baked into the textures, since the environments, and *most* characters are static.)

But you could definitely afford to have some dynamic lighting, at least from some street lamps when in town, for example.

Title: Answers for the New Screenshots!
Post by: Roman on June 20, 2007, 03:10:38 AM
1. Lord Azure is telling to Lady Ariel: "Dear Ariel! I can't cover my admiration, you are so beautiful! Hey, stop! What is the black spot on your white dress? Is it Graham's feet icon? How the player dare put it on you, my Angel?"

2. Graham is in the room of Zodiac signs. So he should light the candles in the proper order, starting, for example, from the sign of the Lady shown on the portrait. The correct Graham's actions should reveal some hidden object and/or summon the soul of the woman in the center of the circle. Incorrect actions should extinguish the candles.

3. Rosella's auto-biography may be called as "Perils of Princeless Bride" (most common name representing her previous adventures, i guess).

You guys suck. You got hardcore fans so excited about this game and then just STOPPED. You call yourselves artists? You're quitters and should be ashamed. "It's difficult" , "I have family members" , "I stubbed my toe so I couldnt possibly work".

If you wanted it to work, you would make it work. Every one of you who isnt doing everything in your power to get this game out there should be ashamed to call themselves an artist and do not deserve the title of adventurer.

graham is rolling over in his grave. goodnight.

We haven't stopped anything. We are working hard on the game. To give you an illustration of this, I have another window open right now where I'm working on stuff for the game. Not for PR, my regular role on the team, but the game itself. We are dedicated, and we are doing everything possible to get this game released to you, to the point where people like myself (not a programmer or artist) are being brought in to the production side do whatever we can to help expedite this.

Regarding a couple of comments:

Textures and Lighting - To answer scorpion007's comments:  We are incorporating some dynamic lighting into the game.  In fact, while we haven't shone it to you all yet, we have started working on it in-engine.  While most of the backgrounds will have baked shadows (with a few dynamic lights for effects), we are working on having dynamic lighting on the characters in the game.  This will greatly enhance the look of the game.  The shots you've seen thus far have NOT implemented this.  Not to mention the use of in-engine volumetric lighting and particle effects, animated water and skies.

Work on the game:  Pissed - I totally understand your frustration.  We have not stopped work on the game.  Most of us work on it every day.  I even work on it from my day job on my lunch break.  We ran into a number of issues with the engine and have been working those out.  Also, we are working on cleaning up a lot of the artwork and effects.  We have all these separate elements, now we're trying to get them all combined and working in the engine.  I have been working with this team since 2002 and have invested way too much blood, sweat and tears to not see this through to completion.  Yes, it is taking forever, but it IS coming :).

- Michael

Oh really?

I second that. Unless nothing has been done for the past seven months or the project is dead, I think now is the time to show something to the public . . .

One of the reasons people believe the/a project is dead, is the fact that nothing is been shown for a very long time. Now it's for this team impossible to show something every week but once or twice per three to six months must be achievable and gives a heartbeat to the community other then posts like "we're still here", which people will wimple away as lies . . .

We released a screenshot about a month ago that was a prize from one of the forum contests. Also, the Picture/Caption contest has just ended and the winners will be receiving a prize. So work is being done. :)

That's all nice and such but that's not a public image, only available to a handfull of selected people and the majority of us can't really be bothered to enter one of those "competitions" so they will be left empty handed and if left empty handed, they will lose interest if they haven't done so already . . .

It would really do some good to the team if they were to release something every once in a while, without conditions, without restrictions to let people see anything without having to enter a competition just to see that the game is still alive . . .

If anyone's interesting in pondering something...it's interesting that people consider screenshots as proof that a game is still going and as an accurate indication of progress, yet don't take a statement "we're still working on it" seriously. (while it may give more clues on progress than something graphic) It's something we bumped into at AGDI while working on QFG2VGA. That game's backgrounds have been completed for a long time, what was left was a massive amount of programming and tweaking work. Even though all backgrounds had been completed a long time, people still wanted screenshots as a "sign of progress".

This basically means that the following situation could take place (works for both active and dead projects):

Fan: The project is dead. Admit it. There haven't been status updates in a long time.    :furious:

Developer: It's not. We're still working on it daily. It's a slow process, but we're still working.  :-\

Fan: Words, words. Don't you have proof? Like a screenshot?  >:(

Developer: (whips out a screenshot of a background that was made 2.5 years ago, but was never made public before) Well, this screenshot was made like....  :sneaky:

Fan: Yay, yay, a screenshot. Now I have faith again. The game is still alive. Now I believe the game is still progressing!  :D :D :D :D

I'll let people figure out the moral themselves.  8)

Still I give AGDI more credit since they have already released 2 games.  They have released a revamped King's Quest 1 and a King's Quest 2 that seems so different that I consider it a new game in many ways.  Congratulations to them and hopefully TSL will be able to have a game to their credit soon.  Sure, TSL did release a demo but it would be nice to be able to see an updated demo even if it is from material a year old.

I understand that the development team needs time to make a game and I fully agree that we should give them the time to do it, but the fans haven't heard anything for 4 months. And I'm sure that everyone can agree that thats a pretty long time to go without information.

I agree with what erpy said about taking the developers for their word, but to the waiting fans defense I can't help but ask a couple of questions. 1. to erpy: you say that we should be content with "were working on it" but for 4 months all the fans have been hearing is that same phrase over and over,(except for about 2 weeks ago when mfortunato's post  actually did tell the fans some of what's going on in development) And without hearing anymore than that same repetitive phrase every blue moon you would start thinking that maybe they really aren't working on it.

2. to the developers: you tell the fans over and over your working on it day and night(God bless you for that) now I'm not trying to question whether you are actually doing that nor am I undervaluing all the work you put into it even when your not paid nor asking you to sell your soul to this game, but I can't help but think that over the course of the past 4 months that you would be able, at the very least, to go on the forums and talk about development and what you are currently working on, but so far all we have gotten is "We're working on it." And then to top it all of the forumer who expresses his/her concerns about development is suddenly berated by die-hard forumers calling him/her impatient, troller, not true fan, negative, pessimistic, ect....

Again I'm fine with waiting another 2 years for the game as long as we have updates and know that it's still in production.

well that was probably more than most of you would like to read, but thats my opinion of it.

Good point, Stijn, and great to see you here.

I'd really love to show the fans everything I've seen of the game to prove that it's moving ahead, I really would. But then it wouldn't be the same when you actually played it.

Ah, if I had a screenshot for every time a fan said "the project is dead"... No seriously, that would be cool 8)

I don't see what else they can say besides "we're working on it", unless there's something new the fans should know about. :-\

That's not entirely true. Most die-hard forumers can tell the difference between someone who expresses concern for the project and someone who just drops by to say "you're all liars, the project is dead" ;)

I totally understand you don't want to release everything, and don't want to give much up, and I respect it.  In this case, I think the reason fans get tired and disappear is because the idea of this particular project (not that its been worked on the whole time or didn't have its setbacks) started what? Six years ago?  The graphics would have been out of date in 2000, and people could have gone from junior high to highschool!  Its just too long, what can you really do to stop people from getting bored without releasing the game?  I'm sure releasing news other than 'working on it' every five months would help, but even that wouldn't solve the problem.  People placed a tremendous amount of faith in the game, and they having nothing really to show for it.
I'm not saying you don't have good excuses for the countless delays, I'm just saying this is what happens.  I got sick of it after two weeks of posting on the boards (this happened about six months ago), and I just came back to see if there was ANY progress.  From an outside view, however, the same sort of talk has been going on for a LONG time.
I won't post here anymore, but I will download the game if it gets made.  On the bright side, after the game is made, fans will spring up to complement it.  Good luck with the game.
Oh, and I'm not a troll, and I'm not being overly pessimistic.  I'll under stand if the development team wants to start cussing me out too, but I feel I'm just stating a fact.

                                                                     Ta-ta + Cheers

The project has been going on for a long time, though I'd say it wasn't really organized until 2002. Still, 4 years is a long time to be in production for a game. The statement "Don't worry, we're still working on it," is tantalizing, and the die-hard fans aren't exactly immune to it. :P We know that nothing has been really released for a while, but the team can't release too much more without starting to reveal bits about the plot. Screenshots are pretty safe, but they don't keep people happy for long, as you can see by this thread. :P The media section is FULL of things to look at. Sure, they aren't new, but they're just as amazing. The music is just as beautiful as the day it was released. The concept art still leaves us wondering at what exactly the concept is for. I've never seen a game with this many promotional media goodies, actually. :P I could be totally wrong and games release things all the time, but I don't follow them, so I don't really care. :P They're not giving us much to work with, but I have a feeling like that means they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know how close they are to being done. I especially don't know how long it will take Vivendi to approve. The lack of having time to make journal entries (maybe I'm just bad at it, but it was hard for me to make journal entries on the TSL Deviant Art account :P) says to me that they're busy working with the game. It's not much consolation, but I don't want screenshots; I want the game, so it works for me. I believe in these guys. I believe in the entire team. I haven't met most of them, but I do nonetheless. :P Most games don't give much info on a game until they want to create hype before the release. TSL has been upfront with us since the beginning. Now you don't see them much around the community anymore. I really feel like that means they're getting more work done, not less.

And of course, there's one thing that's always being updated: the forum. Maybe some of you guys aren't really into it, but it keeps the wait fun for me. The team is working; we know they are. Maybe POS created too much hype for the game before they were even close to releasing it. Maybe they messed up by giving a tentative release date in the last official birthday chat (you know, before the shutdown) making us sure it wouldn't be long until they were done. My opinion is that they're just making the game way better than it would've been then. I believe lip syncing was mentioned in a journal entry. :P Maybe they messed up by talking about starting this game before they really had much to work on. Some people might think they did, or at least act like they think it would be better if they hadn't, but I like it. It gives less of a corporate feel. The team members are human, not super-machines that aren't working fast enough, which is what it's so easy to think of a development team as when you don't know them. :P I'm rambling, I know, but I'm still pretty sure there's a point buried somewhere. The team is doing their best to get this game out, and everything they have shown us has been amazing. Here comes the blind faith bit that's probably annoying some of you by now. :P I think the team has earned our trust and I believe there's a reason they aren't giving us screenshots and updating the journals. I believe in them, and I think that's all we can really do. :P

Hello,
My name is Kaze and I have been following this website ever since it first came up. Ive always wanted to post but was kinda of a chicken. And after reading some of this topic i was like i want to write something LOL.

I was so happy when this game was announced. I loved KQs i didnt grow up with it but i certainlky plaed them all numerous times and the two new ones made by that other fan site.

Ok i have been to this website since it first stared and i believe i was in the 8th grade now im a 2nd year college student. I know for people who dont ask for any money (think your crazy) would take some time in developing this game. My concern is that it has been a long time since this game was announced and it is a Trilogy. If it takes this long to do part 1 what about the other two parts?  :-\

If it takes 3-4 years to finish part 1 it will take another 6-9 years to finish the game... :-\

Thats the one thing i have always wanted to say...

It shouldn't because once Part 1 has been completed, the majority of the framework will be in place.  For example, we had to design our own inventory & dialogue system (because the engine didn't come with one appropriate for adventure games).  However, now that they exist, they do not need to be re-created for Parts 2 and 3, they just get re-used.

Similarly, we will be fully aware of what techniques, organizational strategies and work processes work best at particular stages of development.  During Design, the focus was more on 2D sketches, concept art, backgrounds, and static 3D models.  Now it's more on 3D animations, lipsync, cameras, dynamic lighting, etc.

Even though we've been developing this game for years, there have been many obstacles we've had to overcome.  The entire process has been a great learning experience for us all.  The problems/mistakes made in the past will not re-appear in future games.

Rosella if you say the project really started in 2002 and it is now 2007 then we are on 5 years and not 4 --- just being a critic

I just added 2 to 2000 so subtracted 2 from TheGreatGraham's claim of 6. :P

Regardless, I should have caught it. Now I'm ashamed. :P

Does that mean that Shadows will come out relatively soon now?

Also another question, will the game still be released in a trilogy?

I had to reread what Neil said after you quoted him. But if you notice, he said "ONCE Part 1 is completed." :)

I have a feeling that it will be coming out this year, and that all of this work is going to make the game better. My guess is it's coming out this Winter (as originally planned) but who knows? It's pretty much all up to Vivendi.
