Title: King's Quest: Mask of Eternity
Post by: dew7 on January 17, 2007, 08:48:35 PM
I noticed on the Sierra website that Sierra does give credit to Mask of Eternity as being King's Quest but it does not say that it is King's Quest 8.  I find that puzzling and also in the King's Quest collection that was recently released it does not include Mask of Eternity.  I wonder if Sierra ever does another King's Quest if they will call it King's Quest 8 or 9.  Any thoughts?

Thanks for your points, LN.  I really appreciate them.  I still wonder if Sierra will decide to make another King's Quest.

Sierra/Vivendi making another King's Quest might not be such a good thing, look at what happened to Leisure Suit Larry.

I would HATE to see this happen to King's Quest, which has already had it's reputation damaged by MoE.

Yes, MoE did definitely ruin the reputation of King's Quest.  I wonder what Sierra was thinking when they released MoE.  Perhaps they wanted to release a Doom type adventure game which did not fit the King's Quest genre.

Doom? Adventure? MoE is nothing like Doom... :P

It kinda of reminds me of Doom in the sense when you are in first person perspective and you have to fight lots of creatures.

Atleast MoE has some sense to the killing. XD

Point of note, MoE was one of the best selling adventure games of its year. It outsold Grim Fandango 2-1.

Only problem? Adventure games in general were failures that year.

So in general it wasn't MoE fault it was the fault of Adventure Games industry, and the public. Adventure games just weren't as profitable or enjoyed by the masses at that time. Adventure games demographic was too limited to be profitable.

Infact adventure games still have a limited demographic.

According to one interview  Roberta Williams claimed it sold comparable well to previous King's Quest games, at least as well as KQ7 did.

Only problem what she would have considered successful, had her husband still owned the company was not considered successful by Sierra's owners at the time. Havas Interactive, IIRC.

BTW MoE is nothing like doom it has more in common with Tomb Raider style games. Yes you could play in first person but it actually worked better in 3rd person. Plus all the puzzle solving was very much tomb raider inspired.

The battle system itself was more "diablo" like point and click killing. Although it also had some similarities to QFG5 battle system as well. The designers though claimed Ocarina of Time, and Super Mario 64 as inspirations. Which also had some what tomb raider style puzzle solving in parts.

Yeah well Doom is an FPS no puzzle solving or anything and no use of guns, so I agree with you. It actually does come across as more of a Tomb Raider style game.

I remember them claiming it was like Super Mario 64, but I completely disagree with them on that one. XD
As for OoT I definitely see a resemblance.

Ya, I agree.  Besides both SM64 and MOE being 3-d games, having the ability to explore, and possibly box pushing puzzles, I don't personally see much else in common, LOL.
