The rules are pretty straightforward though we'll modify them for our online format. Basically, we have a "village" or "town" of people (us) and one of those people (us) is a murderer :o (gasp, boo!). So, during the "day," this being a very democratic society, the townsfolk vote on whom to kill off in hopes of getting the murderer, while each "night" that they are unsuccessful, the murderer thins them out by killing one of their number.
The entire process is mediated by the narrator, who cannot be killed and cannot vote. So to do this on the forum, I think we'll need some way of signing up as wanting to participate (ie- respond to this thread with your intention to play :pleased:), and then we'll vote openly on which players to kill off during our "day" period and then the murderer will PM the narrator with the name of the player he's killed off for the night period.
The narrator will PM the murderer to let him know that he is the murderer after the list of players is fleshed out. (Bear in mind that the murderer is a participating member of the democratic process of picking whom to kill off each "day" since otherwise the murderer is just a townsperson.)

Yes, we vote for the suspect, but really only the living townspeople (including the murderer) should be allowed to vote... and we'll have to do this repeatedly (for each day phase until the murderer is killed or wins). It has been awhile since I made a poll...so I'm not sure how possible all of that is... ???

That's actually a little too difficult to do, because this thread is in Haven versus a separate board. I guess the voting would have to be by PM then.
We can do it in the thread since we have a list of the participants. It should be an open communication between the players so they can discuss, cast doubt, shift blame, that sort of thing (it's all part of the fun of mafia :P).
(In theory, while other people can pop their heads in and comment, their votes won't count unless they are on the list. ;) )

As it was such a long day, we'll make night really short since I have already been informed of who is to be offed. :P Unfortunately, one of the reasons that Her Highness was unable to attend the vote... besides not being on the forum... was that she was the next victim! :o It seems this was a mercy killing *wonders why* ::) (see conversation above :P)... however the murderer was unsure what color rose to leave as a token... so the townspeople find Deloria at rest with an assortment of various colors of roses about. (white, red, etc.)

I'm so glad you brought that up! Well, I could if no one else wants the job... what we usually did (in the group that played in my dorm) was to let the murderer take over if he won or let a townsperson who wanted to take over if they won. (Taking turns so everyone got a shot at being narrator.)
If someone else wants to be narrator, they are welcome to... If someone else is going to do it, I'd prefer if it were someone who just played... just so they'll have gone through the steps with me.
I wouldn't mind being narrator, but I wouldn't mind playing as anything else either.

Very possibly... but you also have to factor in who is murdered... PKC is lynched at sundown and the villagers go to bed. All except Mango and Cat who stay up late together playing cards. In the middle of their card game, they hear a door creak. However, they disregard the creaking door for the cat coming in or the wind or something else and continue their card game. Suddenly, Mango, who is facing Cat, looks up behind Cat ands screams. Koko is bludgeoned so hard that she becomes in conscious. When Cat comes to, she finds Mango's lifeless body laying on the floor, her mouth, ears, and nostrils stuffed with playing cards.
Scrawled on the wall, in presumably Mango's blood, is one word: impostor.
Cat runs to gather the townspeople, her head throbbing all the way to the meeting.

Yes those that are deceased, are really those that the mafia killed. The one's who were lynched are crossed off so that people can keep track of who the mafia's killed and who was killed by the others.

The main difference I see is that the killing is fairly random (organized crime usually kills you for a reason, like not paying protection money) and that usually people didn't try to lynch the Mafia, they ran the place. :P
Also, the Mafia is usually involved in alcohol or drugs.

The rest of the townspeople shuffle into a small room and Delling (being Duke of Saxony) provides the eulogy, and then Elessar (being Count of Cumberland) speaks some words too. As the crowd is shuffling out of the room four gunshots are heard. At the first gunshot mass pandemonium ensues and after the crowd calms down, Elessar is found lying on the ground blood pooling around his arm and Delling with two shots to the head and one to the chest lies dead. In the aforementioned mad dash, Tessy says that she saw Cat drop a pocketknife from the pocket of a jacket that she found in the trash, and, deeming it "almost like new" started wearing it.

Just think about it. I came AFTER the murderer showed up. I've read a certian amount of firearms history, but I can't recall ever hearing of a pistol bayonet. Sounds like something you would see on one of those gimmick 17-18thc self defense guns though. :P

::) I disagree; I think if A3P were to make mistakes on his list, they probably wouldn't be concerning the murderer. It's easy to get the townspeople mixed up, but not the murderer.
Therefore, my suspicions have been narrowed down to Cat, Angelofmusic, and Elessar. I am sure Tess must be innocent. By my own logic, I am innocent too.

The reason I keep getting stuff mixed up is I have around 5 different versions of the list and I go by the one that has the most blood on it. Unfortuanately, the .psd file I use isn't totally correct and so there are lots of errors. So here's a question to make everything clear:

His odds only improve in a meta-reality sense: ostensibly he'll know who's coming and can prepare a defense... in terms of actual gameplay however, when it's down to two people and one-on-one, the mafia has won and yes, the other person is dead. But, hey, so am I this time around. :P

It's because I offer theories and reasoning and whatnot... ...I wasn't going to anymore after the last time, but unfortunately, I forgot that this time until after I'd already done it... *sigh* On the plus side, I think this means few narrators would pick me... Since after all, that would be a short game :P... but who knows... After my AP Comp Sci exam, one of the seniors taught it to us. The Mafia kept killing me as one of the first people until one of my friends was in it.
The lesson: It's good to have friends in the mafia.

Well, to get back on topic: what new roles should we add?
Go here http://www.princeton.edu/~mafia/oldmafia/rules.htm for the list of people. It's long. I suggest the inspector/archangel and maybe the vigilante. Rambo would be cool, but we're not sitting.

I guess that for additional roles, we could have an additional mafia (or two depending on how many people we get) and a an angel/detective role. Of course, we still need to decide who is going to be narrator too.

The narrator assigns parts (angel, mafia, regular citizen) to players via IMs, and sets up the scenario. This can be as simple or complicated as the narrator wants.
Between each voting round, the angel IMs the narrator who they want to protect, and the mafia IMs the narrator who thay want to eliminate.
Then the narrator gives a short stroy on how the person died, was saved, etc. or just simply announces it.
