Just a few suggestions, not criticisms! 8)
I'm not much of a blogger myself, but several forums I go to have recently implemented a fancier private profile that lets the user create blog entries and also lets other users publically comment on that users profile. (Seperately from the PM system)
It really seems to boost traffic and peoples interest in their profiles and going to the forum, so maybe it'd be possible to do that here too?
On another note in the same ballpark, it might be fun to get an "interests" section so people can write what their interests are, the only real place to do that now is the signature, which is a bit silly. :P
Was the forum that had these features an SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org)-based forum like ours?

No I think it was
vBulletin. I know absolutely nothing about the workings of this or any other forum so I don't know how implmenting such features is made possible. I just thought a forum is a forum (lol :P) and that they must allow you to costumize and add to some degree. But again, this is where my total ignorance of the technical aspects kick in. :(
Basically, those things sound like customized add-ons rather than standard features. If they were already developed for SMF, it would be simple to add into our forum. When I'm less busy, I'll check to see if someone has already developed them for SMF.
