Yay, Mike Art! Of course, now my response on the pic is in the other thread...

Oh, and I suppose you might want to unsticky the Sketch of the Week thread.

Oh, and... (polite cough)

They can have all the fancy sized pop-ups they want without causing problems for people who surf without javascript-enabled and/or are addicted to their right-mouse-buttons. Plus it cures the weird cursor problem. Win-win.

I am many things, but "Subtle" is not one of them. ;) "Annoying Pain in the Ass" is, though.

Out of curiousity... is the game going to be in 800x600 res, or was the background "miniaturized" for the gallery?

If you do the game 4096x3072, I'll buy that res monitor just so I can experience the full effect. ;)

I'm already using it as my background  ;)

The game is a full 3D engine, therefore you will have the option to choose your resolution.  I have tried the current build of the game in 640x480 up to 1600x1200.  It works in all of them.

Post by: mfortunato on February 17, 2004, 11:36:58 AM
Oh, and regarding the balcony, Chris Ciocan drew the sketch, I just painted it.  I don't really draw anything for the game, I'm just the colorist.  Kind of like the inker (you're just a tracer - you trace the lines that someone else draws!) - for those of you who get that reference ;).

Post by: Jeysie on February 21, 2004, 09:41:53 AM
Very cute, Bushie! Although the smilies are so small that it makes the heart eyes a little hard to make out. :( Hmm. Any way around that?

I could mock up a little heart icon, although I'm not good enough to give it a pretty 3D effect.

I love KQ6!  Random, I think not!  I love the dangling participle...but didn't get it until I got into HS English!  I don't think that my family and I ever finished a KQ game without a hint book.  Even if we all (talking about five of us) gathered around the game, we'd get pretty far, but, especially for the later games, we'd miss something and not be able to finish the game.

Hintbooks good, a little bit of a rip off I guess… lets’ see game costs $45 - $60 plus up to $15 for the hintbook. Isn’t the advent of easily available walkthroughs and strategy guides on the net wonderful?

Title: Re:Art of the week
Post by: koko_99_2001 on March 11, 2004, 01:36:58 PM
But...if you get the hintbook (like we did) for the first six games...then you have bought all six of them at about $45 each...*doing the math* comes to $270...

but then, we didn't have the internet until 1998, I think, so it was totally useless before.  We had to have the hint book...and I do enjoy all of the stories included in them  :P

Patience!

The Art of the Week feature is actually a rotation that repeats itself each month.

Because we launched the site half a month into, we repeated the rotation, but there are two different types of art coming.

Fear not, there's a dark-cloaked ferryman as well :D.

Darn, I was just about to say that  :-\
It figures, with all the duality going around here... my guess is that many things, maybe even the entire world, would have a dark and a light side. It shows very well in the screenshots and background art  ;)
Title: Re:Art of the week
Post by: Yonkey on March 15, 2004, 06:37:24 PM
Yup, duality's huge.  ;D

I'm not sure if anyone said it explicitly yet, but this site's design does reflect some of the major themes found in KQ9.  If you notice: not everything is bright, and not everything is dark.  Just like in KQ9, duality is key.  :)

Morbid... there's a lot of morbidness around. Just wait till you see the Stone Castle. or a certain school of Dark Magics... wayyyyyyyyyyy morbid :)

and yeah, like Neil said, Duality is the key in this game. Everything is like two sides of the same coin.

And there's this huge beanstalk and this giant fairy princess and there's a huge evil looking castle and a giant hairy evil beast-like monster who's planning on controlling Daventry's population of corn - there will be no corn left in Daventry!  How will they make the tortillas for tacos and salsa!  AY AY AY AY AY AY!!!!!

btw - except for there being a castle in the game, nothing I mentioned above is true (like you didn't know that already) :P

None of the pictures or screenshots include Alexander or Rosella :'(

Are you trying to torture us ???, or keep there identities a secret ???

(Either that, or they haven't finished up their models yet.)

Oooo, Graham is meeting the KQ6 oracle!!  :D
I wonder what he had to do to get an appointment with her... Or maybe they just gave him a free pass for being the king's father  :P

Looks like the oracle had a diet... I remember her being much bigger standing over Alexander in KQ6. The pool was bigger too, or at least higher  :S

The wings are kind of a dead give-away... unless the oracle has a sister (or a daughter :P). Putting yet-another winged oracle in the KQ series wouldn't be very original (see MOE)  8)

Well, if I just had to say my two bits.....Most of the Oracle's size in KQ6 was her wings.  And her hair.  She had hair.  I must say, I kind of liked her better in KQ6, she was much more imposing.  But that was partially the angle.  And I'm assuming its the same oracle here, anyways.
Still, that's an AMAZING piece of art!  Good job!!

Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Questing Character on May 03, 2004, 03:00:43 PM
Well, here's hoping she's imposing and mysterious!  The only time I've ever been impressed by a non-imposing and non-mysterious oracle was....well, never.  The only impressive thing about the one in the Swamp in MoE (from watching my brother play the demo) was that it was a tree that could digest gold.  Which, I suppose, makes it mysterious.....

The nice thing about this pic is that it already looks so 3D that the 3D version will look extremely close to it (well, that's my theory anyway).

And, yes, this should be one mother of a puzzle ;).

Oh, and I had nothing to do with this image.  This was done by a very talented artist who is no longer working with us.  Nothing bad, she just had too much other work to do.

And, it's funny, it does remind me of 5th element too! :D

Hahaha, Rob!  ;P

It's so kewl reading about how a particular scene or background is described in the plot, and then seeing the Art team actually sketch, draw, colour, paint, model, & texture them.

That's one of the reasons we loved the whole concept behind the Art of the Week, because it shows the whole process that a piece of artwork goes through.  Well, static artwork that is. ;P

Post by: Grundy on May 10, 2004, 01:15:40 AM
Nice mapping work, the textures seem a tad 'plain' though. But I'm just picky when it comes to textures!  ;B
They need a bit more variation in colour/contrast, they're a bit too red all over and not enough definition in the details.

Oh, I was just wondering, do we actually make comments, recommendations and crits? Or do we just look at them and go  "oooohhhh.... pretty....."?
I just want to make sure that it's alright to criticise before I go and possibly offend any of the modelers.   :D

Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: mfortunato on May 10, 2004, 10:35:20 AM
As the person who painted the textures, I have to agree with grundy.  They are a little plain.  They also don't match the chess backgrounds very well, so they may end up a little more dynamic when they are placed in the scene.  I painted these early on and I've gotten better.  The chessland set is so vibrant compared to the chess pieces (since I painted the chessland set more recently).

Say, grundy, do you paint textures?  Fancy a "volunteer" job with us? If so, please apply now!:D

Well Chris, I'm not sure quite HOW much bigger you want them but if you head over to the wallpaper (http://www.postudios.com/archivedTSL/media/wallpapers/) section then you'll find the second link in a bigger form as well as some seriously cool wallpapers for your computer ;)

Also if you head over to the gallery section here (http://www.postudios.com/archivedTSL/media/gallery/index.php?album=backgrounds) you'll find a larger version of the ferry (one of my fav pieces on teh site actually :D) along with more art which I'm sure uou'd beinterested in.

For the other two I'm not entirely sure...Anyone help me out here?

Post by: Grundy on May 23, 2004, 08:28:42 PM
Awwww.... how nice of you...   :lovegoggles:

I thought you'd show the textured version though, but I guess the textures will be different in the game anyway.

Well, a bit about the pic. It's a basement, wine barrels everywhere. ( The guy who owns it must be a drunk. ) It will be dark and dingy in the game.
Well, back to work.
( For those on the team, I'll post a final version of the next scene VERY soon. )  ;D

The final textured version may come later as an AOTW... or maybe as a contest prize... 8)

Okay, I won't post the old textured version.

I'm actually texturing as I speak.
( I'm checking in on here while I render with different textures. )

So hang out for a few minutes, I may have a new screenie on the groups soon.    ;)

Seriously, the reason I stopped posting here is that all the Art Of The Week pics look so awesome I have nothing to say but compliments, and everyone else is already doing a great job at giving those... Plus I usually show up late and find that what I want to say was said already (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=758;start=440#msg64084) (though I probably wouldn't have used that particular phrase) 8)

BTW Katie, from what little secrets you and Cesar* have given away about the script I can say that I greatly look forward to your interpretation of the KQ storyline (I have mentioned on another forum that I am creating my own KQ9 adventure so it will be interesting to see how different, or similar(?), my variation will be**)

Sorry, no websites up but I am considering posting a few items of art/script on the various fan contribution forums so look there for any news of my project (sorry, I know I shouldn't be talking about my project on the AOTW forums but I had to digress...just this once you see...never to be repeated again...err...I hope!)  ;)

lol, that's just a 3D model of the background.  The 3D textured one will have all the bells and whistles (not to mention look much less cubic XD).
Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Shadowfax on September 22, 2004, 10:18:55 AM
Hope so, the place looks like it as been measured in cubits and took so long to build that the length of a cubit changed several times, therby ruining the nice lines of construction.*

*Okay,a bit of a poor joke this; a cubit is considered the length of the ruling Monarch's arm and it would therefore change whenever a new one ascended the throne...just in case no-one knew what I was on about!

Well, that's where the signs are located (their respective constellations, at least) :-\

Plus there's this pic on the Art Of The Week section that's located in the sky (or space?)... I might be totally off here, but it looks to me like a representation of the zodiac - it has twelve of those 'tags' that seem to correspond with twelve symbols (signs have symbols), and there's the four elements in it - every sign has a correspoding element as well :S

Nonsense, dreams come from the heads of men and women alike. If they came from the stars then we would all have dead dreams (remember, it takes so long for light to reach us that some stars can already be dead yet the naked eye would never know until thousands of years in the future!)

Oh wait, thats meant to be one of those cryptic clue things isn't it? Oh well, I drink to that...whatever it is...  ;D

Imagine....

Someone signs up for the forum
"this is gonna be GREAT!"

They have a couple of questions, that they just have to ask. So they post their questions.
"Wow, I wonder how they'll answer!'"

Then Neil answers them, with "Sufferring"
*"AH!! !! !!, My monitor's trying to eat me!! !! !!"

They run away(in fear).

*or any other sentence, that would show the horror of seeing it in response to a question. :P

------------------------------------------------------------

Back on topic....

Is that the high polygon model, or the low-polygon model? ::)

All the 3D models in KQ9 are low-poly. :)
Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Shadowfax on October 02, 2004, 03:54:37 PM
Low-poly eh?

Well if you can have that detail with only a low number of polygons then I am certainly impressed!
Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Grundy on October 02, 2004, 09:27:48 PM
Low-Poly is a very general term and often depends on the game engine used and minimum hardware target.

We've had a lot of discussion on this forum about the minimum hardware and what sort of game we're aiming for.

This game will blow your mind.... as long as you have XYZ minimum hardware.  So yeah, this IS low poly, but probably a bit higher than what you're used to.   ;)   Does that help?   ;)
Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Shadowfax on October 03, 2004, 03:22:05 PM
Well, I wasn't questioning your ability, only complimenting it!

But still, I hope it does blow my mind as it were. FOr my KQ IX to work it will need high polygon models and probably require at least Pentium 5000 before it will work to it's fullest extent!

Well, I will make another wild theory:

The beast was originally cursed by Manannan during his "wild youth" but became human through Alexander. However, because Alexander will have gone mad in KQ IX he will resurrect Manannan from being a cat and he will return to the Isle of the Beast and curse the man again!

Yes, I know that is completely and utterly wrong but let me speculate anyway! Its more worthwhile then trying to extract an answer out of the KQ IX team!

As for Manannan's "wild youth," well I can safely say that his youth was pretty wild in my KQ IX!

Quote from: Shadowfax on October 14, 2004, 03:08:23 PMOh well, it was a good try!

I've had a couple of speculations about that myself (lame, I know... use Suffer as necessary):

1. Once the curse is broken, the prince can turn back into a beast at will.

2. Beauty was kidnapped/left the prince, which caused him to revert to beast form.

3. Basically Shadowfax's idea - the original curser/someone else equally evil decided to curse him again.

4. A dark mega-curse has taken over the land, triggering the beast's curse back into action.

5. And my favorite for being the least stupid - in KQ9, you get to travel back in time (or see a flashback) where the beast while still under the curse.

Shoot in all directions and you're bound to hit something, that's my motto :P

I have read the Silmarillion but that was such a long time ago I have forgotten all the details! (hmm, Eldar rings a bell!)

As for the rooms we can explore, well I always was curious to see what was inside those two dirty great doors on the Eastern Hallway! (I could tell you what is behind the doors in my KQ IX but that would be telling!)

 ;D

Unsure where we will find him; My theory is that the ex-beast/king of the Isle of the Beast (pretty sure he will rename the place after being turned back into a man), replaced the archer statues with something a little less lethal, something that plays music as you go past rather than shoots arrows!  ;)

Cool. Is that from KQ7?

Not that I can recall :-\

Since it's a winged statue, it might belong in the city of the winged ones... we've been getting lots of arts from The Land of The Green Isles lately :S

As for the most recent fellow, I could be dead wrong, but the robe and organic-woodsy look makes me think he belongs in the Isle of Mists :S
Also, it's eyes should be glowing or something ;)

Storm, I was thinking about the grove that is right outside the exit from the desert. I seem to recall some statues there, I was wondering if this could be one.
Title: Re:Art of the Week
Post by: Storm on November 07, 2004, 01:16:27 PM
Yeah, I figured that's what you meant... but in KQ7, one of those statues carries a pitcher, the other a cornucopia, and none of them are winged :-\

Ah memories!

Don't ask me why but when I run KQ VI on Win XP, his dialogue portrait is completely different (low quality version which is completely different from the "original" pic which I used to get running Win 95)

Still, nice 3D work all (makes me wince with the thought that I will have to attempt something like that in the future, single handedly!)

The low-res dialogue portraits are use if you're playing the DOS version, or the Windows version with the speech turned off. It was discussed Here. (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=1369)

Looking back at it, I think it's not that bad, really. Besides the arms, it is quite good, but as I said before the arms look EXTREMELY unrealistic. Maybe if Graham was supposed to be a comical, cartoon character he would walk around with his arms like that, but isn't he supposed to be a serious character?

If those arms get fixed this will be just as great as the other AotW's we've seen the past couple of weeks.

Hmmm.... either:
"The woman I saw was THIS FAT! :o "

or

"And the big mean grizzly bear came up to me and said..." (as told to his grandkids many years from now)

XD

Yeah, Graham looks a bit too buff for his old age... guess he's been pumping too much iron ;)

Valanice's figure is pretty good for her age! ;-D Considering she had twins at one point besides.... ;)

Remember everybody, this is a "fantasy" game, it's not supposed to realistic  :P And besides, Graham's muslces wouldn't just disappear in such a short time, and Valanice did say in KQ7 that she's trying to watch her figure. Also, they are main characters, they take care of themselves. You wouldn't want them walking around all out of shape with canes and dentures now would you :-\

Lol...It's Edgar.  Question: does he look exactly like he looked in KQVII?  I haven't played the game in forever, but I think he's very similar.

He is... just better(although, you're going to lose/gain something in the conversion ;P ). :D

I'll IM you a pic if you want, but I think replaying the game would be more fun. :-\

Yeah, you could.  Mainly because I don't have the game here at school with me.  And I'm not even sure if it's installed on our home computer.

Just to clear any confusions, that is indeed the Edgar from KQ7.

There are a total of four different designs for Edgar in KQ9. (propably 6, as a matter of fact ;)

Not bad, my Conner sketches are better though ( ;))

Seriously though; the 3D models look excellent, however I will say they will look seriously better with textures; paint hides a multitude of sins!

(BTW, your Edgar looked slightly dodgy on first inspection; I thought he was a woman 1st time round!)

:) It was easy actually, the 3 main characters, the two married couples and the man who was a Troll.

Pics of connor being all well and good (i do rather like it), how about something new up? I know they're all busy and such, but it's been AGES!  heh. It's frustrating being outside of all this and wondering what the insiders are up to.  8)

The reason why we stopped the AotW is because we are working on a new feature. Just wait a little bit longer. Something huge is coming this way.

I like the 3D art that's up in the media section. The models of the characters look good. I saw the 'family portrait' and the costumes in it were cool. The artists here must be woking hard.
