Title: Adventure Gaming on Wii or PS3
Post by: fletchccc on January 10, 2010, 08:29:10 PM
Hello all, I have both the PS3 and Wii consoles and am looking for good Adventure games on either or both.  Too many games these days are all about combat.  I grew up playing King's Quests, Hero's Quests, etc.. etc..  Looking for an actual adventure game.
Favorites?  THANKS!

Is there a Zelda game for the Wii yet?  Those are always great.

Technically speaking, The Legend of Zelda isn't an adventure game, but an action adventure game, which is a bit different. The main difference is the fact that there is combat. I am unaware of any PS3 adventure games, but there are a few for the wii. If you go to the Wii Shop Channel, you can download the Tales of Monkey Island series from Telltale games, which is purely adventure. If you're looking to relive some old games from the days of yore, retail outlets do offer some of the old Humongous Entertainment games on the wii, such as Spy Fox and Pajama Sam. Other than that, I'm unaware of many. There is the sequel to Nintendo's popular DS adventure game, Trace Memory. The sequel was made for the wii, to my knowledge, but I don't know if it came out in America. The best system to get adventure games for is the PC. As great as the wii is for adventure games, there aren't too many on it. There are probably more than I can think of, but that's about all I know. And yes, there is a zelda game for the wii, called Twilight Princess, but it was originally made for the Gamecube, meaning the Wii version could've been better. That being said, Nintendo has confirmed a new Legend of Zelda made exclusively for the Wii for release in 2010. We will very likely see more about it at Nintendo's E3 2010 press conference.

Thanks so much, Keep any and all suggestions coming.  Also would appreciate PC suggestions for newer adventure games.

For PC adventure games, there are plenty. One I would particularly recommend is A Vampyre Story. It's a very good game. I've been hearing that The Painted Tower is good, but I haven't yet played it. I've also heard that Dreamfall and The Longest Journey are both good. If you haven't yet played Myst, that's one to keep in mind too. Also, you can get a copy of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition from Steam for the PC, which is very good. I have it for the Xbox 360, and it's amazing how well the controls actually worked on it... You can download the high quality remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 from www.agdinteractive.com if you haven't already, and www.infamous-adventures.com has a high quality remake of KQIII available, and are currently in the process of doing a SQ2 remake. That's all I can think of right now, but there's plenty more than what I just listed. The PC adventure gaming realm is far bigger than that of consoles.

what he said.  ;D

Monkey Island is great, I`m gonna have to get it cause I got a wii. All the remakes are amazing, and the KQ2 remake is just remarkable.

and Zelda is great too, there is combat, but that isn`t the  whole game.

Myst, Riven, Exile are all great, but they are older. (not like thats bad or anything)

and my personal favorite of the myst style games (like that way of first person navigating adventure games...... Riddle Off the Sphinx.  Its AMAZING.  but really long, I have the old version, but I think the new one just hhas some updated graphix.  link to the site. Actually, I wouldn't advise getting Monkey Island on the Wii.  I heard some really bad reviews about that port.  The PC version is way better.

I think DD mentioned this earlier, but I too think the PC is the best platform for adventure games.  Consoles aren't really designed for them, IMO.

On the ps2, there is a great game called treasure planet.  I loved it, its really more actian adventure but there is a nice story if I remember right.

and agreed, the PC is better for adventures.

If you own a DS or an iPhone/iPod Touch, I would highly recommend Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Director's Cut for the DS and Wiii, and Beneath a Steel Sky for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Both are made by Revolution Studios, which, from what I understand, is heavily invested in adventure games. Their remakes of the afforementioned games have been well received, and the head of the company, who also created the games, has said that he plans on doing new games in each series, and that we may see remakes/director's cuts of the other games in each series. Both are amazing. Also, I would highly recommend The Journeyman Project 1-3. They're older games, but they're fantastic. I admit that I started the series in reverse (mainly because my copy of Myst 3 came with a free demo for Journeyman project 3 and I was intrigued, and off to amazon I went...), but it was still thoroughly enjoyable for me. The DS and Wii have potential for adventure games, but I personally believe, that, no matter what, the PC will always remain the best platform for Adventure games, as that's where the genre started. Hell, that's where video games themselves first started. Oh, one other good game. Zork: Grand Inquisitor. Absolutely amazing. You may even want to try out the original text adventures in the series, all of which are good.

I also have heard there are graphics and control issues for Tales of Monkey Island on the Wii. I have them for PC and they're great!

I've actually played it on the Wii, it is terrible! Stay clear! I have no idea how they could botch it so much. :-\

Cez said basically it's because the Wii has a 40MB storage limit, which is severely crippling for a 3D game.  They had to use things like midi for music and highly compressed and crappy sounding voices.  The choppy gameplay is most likely related to this limit as well.  But yeah, the PC version doesn't have this limit or any of these issues.

My only concern with the PC version is the control scheme. It's kind of awkward. I like a traditional point and click or text parser system, but the scheme used in the tales of monkey island series is just odd in my opinion... But overall the first game is good (sadly, I'm THAT behind lol XD)

It is point & click for the most part.  It's just the walk system that's a bit... different. :P  I got used to it after a while, and I like that holding down Shift made him walk faster.

I suppose it's a modern evolution of the archaic system... It is different to me, but I suppose it'll take some getting used to. Just like the control scheme on the Xbox version of the Monkey Island remake took some getting used to...

Is there a Tomb Raider game for the Wii? It's more action since you do have to kill different animals (I killed a T-Rex!), but there is some puzzle solving. I spent about 30 minutes yesterday trying to figure out one specific puzzle!

I miss my PS3. I let me ex keep it since he had a TV that it would work with, but I miss playing Oblivion on it!!

Speaking of which, I know Oblivion has looooottttts of combat but there's also a lot of puzzles and adventure stuff. Strictly speaking it's an RPG but I think it's the closest PS3 has to offer.

PS I <3 Tomb Raider. I wish I'd gotten it for my PS3. I didn't. Epic fail. (Although less of one when you consider that I don't have a PS3 anymore. :P)

Here's a game I just thought of: Though it's not technically an adventure game, it's the closest we're ever going to get in these modern times. Try Heavy Rain. It's a very different take on interactivity in games. It's just a very different game all around. You can try the demo on PSN for free, which should give you an idea of what the game is like.

This conversation seems familiar... :P

But absolutely, Heavy Rain is a very slow-paced, exploration- and character-based game. The demo hooked me (now that I think about it, I should go and buy that soon... :P).

It's a rather dark game for the PS3. It's about this serial killer called the origami killer, and you control a few (I believe 4) characters that each have some relation to him (one's a private detective trying to figure things out, there's an FBI agent...) The main features of it, though, is that you can hear the characters thoughts at any given time (very nice for hints or general characterization), and the interface is ENTIRELY different from any PS3 RPG game I've played. You have to do a lot of things like use a character's inhaler because he has asthma, stuff like that. You actually have to make motions to do actions. As far as I can tell, it's fun (control-wise, not plot-wise), interesting, involving, and really intriguing.

Yeah, I was at Gamestop the other day with 60 bucks in trade in credit (thank you 50% trade in credit event!) and I didn't buy it. I bought the god of war collection, spider man web of shadows and GTA 3 and Vice City instead. I intend to get heavy rain eventually, but I haven't gotten around to it yet... Come to think of it I need to buy Dantes inferno too sometime...
