Title: Let's Play King's Quest
Post by: mateo360 on March 01, 2010, 10:58:32 AM
For those who just want something King's Quest, I am currently doing a let's play of the king's quest collection I am currently on VII and am working on getting MoE to work on my Win 7 computer. Since this a community of King's Quest fan, I thought I would share my videos with you.

We had just been talking about Let's Plays on the forums before all of this BS happened. It's nice to see a playthrough of the VGA remakes. Not that I don't like the originals, I do, but I like the remakes as well.

We'd also been discussing how different people have different styles of Let's Plays that they liked. I was like "The less talking the better!" but I'm a crotchety old man (:P) and at least your talking is well timed to not drown out the game's dialogue and things -- that absolutely drives me nuts. I was watching one Let's Play and the guy just would not keep his mouth shut. I was like.... I'm not watching a game, am I? The game is a background for you to tell your stupid jokes, why are you tricking me like this??? :P

Anyways, it's a nice job overall, and I'm glad to see you've gotten so far already! :)

I want to see a playthrough (preferably without dialogue) of the Apple IIGS version of KQ3.

That sounds pretty cool. I'd like to see someone do one of MoE too though. that'd be pretty nice.

i wonder if there's any way we can get someone to do one for the NES version of kq5.

There's the first part of a non-talking KQVNES for you, Dark-Daventry!  There is a talky one too; whichever you go for, just search for "King's Quest 5 NES" on YouTube.

There's probably an MoE one around about but I never bothered to look, hahahah.  I just want to see that KQ3 one because it seems a pretty big obscurity to me (heck, after hearing the music, I made myself a KQ3 wallpaper for my laptop from the intro movie!).

I have MoE but my Win 7 is Home Premium, I am hoping to upgrade to pro nd get XP mode so I can play and Let's Play it.
@crayauchtin:
I try not to talk over dialog if I can help it unless there are subtitles or text of the dialog.

I did notice and I deeply appreciated it!

There's like....three parts of a MoE playthrough on YouTube, that's the best I could find D-D. As I've never played the whole thing, it'd be nice to watch just to get the story....
Help me, Mateo360 Kenobi, you're my only hope! (Wrong franchise, I know!)

I still have to find the music from that KQ3 thing. If the forums were up, I'd get the link. Sadly, they're not.

You're more than welcome, my friend!  The proviso is though, that you have to totally and utterly enjoy that music!

(Heck, you could even PLAY that music through http://virtualapple.org/ if you so chose!)

*initiates a massive group hug* I think you're right, Haids. So let's all join in on this hug and just remember the good times we had here, and hope for a better and brighter future. We pulled through this once, and we'll pull through it again!

I like group hugs, and I love the unity this community (no rhyme intended) has, with exception to one certain traitor who'd better have the sense to never show themselves around here ever again.

On the subject of Let's Plays, Hercrabbiness (Where did she run off to? :P) did a Let's Play of King's Quest VI (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=74899A14D5D91FB9). Her and her friend turned off the voice acting and did all the voices themselves, which can be pretty amusing. (I prefer her zombie voice over the real one... XD)

Going into other Sierra games, she's also done the first two both Laura Bow games.

Let's see...who else? I know there's this one dude who Let's Played Quest For Glory 1-5 (http://www.youtube.com/ClassicLetsPlay), all silent.

Then there's Kikoskia's Let's Play Space Quest 1 Remake (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=212DC9719F50CB81). Hilarious, but all of his Let's Plays are. XD

I've seen some other Sierra LPs, but I haven't watched enough to really be able to reccomend them.

I plan to do Space Quest after I do King's Quest and Star Trek 25th Anniversary.

I've done LPs of KQ 1-3 (as well as SQ1), and they're not the greatest, mostly because I did them at random and thus I act kind of randomly, especially KQ3, where I had a friend guest star and we had more fun with each other than interest in playing the game.  I don't try to "act" to much in my LPs and let my words just come out, which unfortunately include a bit of profanity (which is not added for comedic effect eg AVGN style, I really am a naughty girl and swear way more often than I should in real life.  I'm working on it).

And I SUCK at voice acting seriously bad.

I prefer commentary in LPs (which I find sort of necessary, since it differentiates a "Let's Play" from a "Let's Watch".  You can only do so much so many times in a game before it becomes just like everyone else's playthough, and commentary is what makes each one unique.

I much prefer those with commentary as well as I really just watch them to see what other people think of the game. Majority of the games I care to watch a Let's Play on I own and can just play myself, so not much point in it for me to watch a silent one.

I got my first jerk comment. It was on my Let's Play Sam And Max Save The World Episode 1 Part 1

"Pardon, but can you please upload a commentary-free version? I prefer more traditional playthroughs."

Seriously? That kind of defeats the purpose of a let's play and I post a link to telltale's site in each of my Save The World vids. He can go buy the game if he doesn't want to listen to my commentary or go find another vid.

Like I said I don't think there should be NO commentary at all, I just think there's often lots of unnecessary or distracting commentary. Having no commentary is just as bad, you *need* commentary to make it useful.

I think uploading a silent playthrough when you're already doing a Let's Play is kinda redundant. :P
It sounds easier to search for a different playthrough than bug someone to do it differently to me. Don't let it discourage you.

I personally prefer to watch non-talky walkthroughs, especially when a game has good dialogue and music.  When people are talking over that, and they haven't got the sound turned down very far on the in-game audio, I find it difficult to hear what they're saying.

There are exceptions, though.  If someone can make a genuinely funny (which is very difficult) Let's Play, I'll watch it.  Or if someone can make one that is informative, I'll watch it.  But far too many of the things are people trying to be zany and just coming off as annoying.  The best thing I've personally found was someone who was doing glitch videos and using the annotations to explain them instead of talking.

Ah, yes, audio levels...one of the most annoying things is when the person talking and the game talking blur into each other and you can't understand ANYTHING. :P

Too bad there's no convenient way to turn commentary on\off...that'd make things so much easier.

That's why annotations are a good solution for some people -- they can be turned on or off, and they never interfere with sounds.

I actually try to have the game volume up to where it can be hear without my voice dominating the whole video and so people can hear the music and dialog.
Title: Re: Let's Play King's Quest
Post by: MangoMercury on March 03, 2010, 10:16:11 AM
See, that's still a problem for me; as a person with hearing impairments, I find it very difficult to just pick out one sound (as well as the source of noise, but for a video, that's irrelevant).  I love my videos with subtitles, but failing that, they need to have one channel of sound to work for me - either the original audio, or the commentary.  Both just makes a video frustrating for me to watch.

I would love Jafar's suggestion, on the other hand, of customisable levels.  Shame that'll probably never happen on YouTube!

Hmm...subtitled LPs...that's an interesting idea. I don't think anyone's ever had subtitles for what they were saying. Probably because it'd distract from the game itself, but it might be an idea worth exploring... :P

Post by: mateo360 on March 03, 2010, 12:37:30 PM
That would be interesting but no only would it distract, it would take more time to make the vids. You would have to watch your own videos, pausing every line to get the time span & wording, Then you would have to program it all into the vid.

Yeah, I guess it isn't really practical. I've seen people do crazier things though.

Oh, you know what'd be useful though? You know how most of the early Sierra talkie games only have voice acting OR text, not both?

Adding captions to go along with the voice acting would be pretty nifty, whether you're doing a silent LP or not.

Actually, as a veteran watcher of television programmes with subtitles (pretty much as long as I can remember), they're not all too distracting as long as they're done properly.

I recently discovered LPs on youtube. They're great background listening while I'm working. :) I really liked QFG 4 by Hercrabbiness and LateBlt in particular so far. I listened to the LB1 LP, and I'm partway into the LB2 one now. I also listened to/watched the very amusing LP of Phantasmagoria that Hercrabbiness and Resulka did. I had never gotten the chance to play that game myself and I now think I would never have the patience for it! But, fun to watch. :)

Since we were talking about subtitled commentary, I just noticed that youtube has a beta going for transcribing commentary and other vocals in to subtitles. It uses Google Speech recognition software.

From what I've seen, it doesn't transcribe english, it transcribes misheard gibberish. ::)
