Title: Game in French ?
Post by: _Symon_ on July 03, 2010, 04:04:57 AM

Hello everyone!

King's Quest I know since I have 2 years (!!!) with the seventh part where we had to embody Valanice and Rosella (1994). I'm 18 now and I still (not later that one hour ago) to play again this year.

I was able to discover a French video game site (www.jeuxvideo.com) your project, I was very excited directly.
But I still ask myself a question: Your game will he a French translation?
And to complete: The game does have voice dialogue and cinematic?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I haven't heard anything about different languages, but since I am not a teammember it doesn't mean it won't be there!  :)

I don't know if there will be other languages either.

There are English voice dialogues and cinematics though. :)

Ok, thank you for your reply.
Hopefully there will be a French version!
If the game's development team wants to find dubbing the French version I can to do the dubbing in my native language

Dude, you guys should consider that!  That's a cool idea!  :)

With the demo at least, the source files were just Ogg files placed into a directory, so if that hasn't changed, it's plausible you could mod the game just by replacing each individual ogg file of the voices with the dubs in French. I think even the text that appeared was just in a file you could open in Notepad.

But keeping in mind all of the people used as voice actors in this game, and the sheer magnitude of the script...This would be no small task. And this is still assuming that they haven't changed the structure of the game to keep their resources files more hidden.

I do not think it will be very difficult (dubbing), I have experience in the dubbing of video games, I have already dubbing in Tomb Raider lol! I know several actors who I think would agree to do the dubbing English -> French gracefully.

(Now, someone needs to mention the French part of Bad Romance so Cray can come in and get blamed for it...)

You should definitely consider making versions in foreign languages if you can find enough volunteers.

Technically, a full translation of TSL is definitely possible. Every line in the game needs an .ogg file and a subtitle, and there are various menu and in-game textures that should be changed, plus a few odd texts here and there... Oh, and some of the videos have speech in them, and that would require a new mixing of the audio track for the videos.

In practice, recording and editing all the voices is a pretty daunting task and if anyone wants to give it a shot they better know what they are in for! :suffer:

A much simpler solution may be to only translate the subtitles, there is LOTS of text in there but it would be a much more feasible project I guess.

J'ai proposé une version française il y a plusieurs années, et je n'ai eu aucun retour... Bonne chance Symon  :)

You need more than just french though.  Make sure you get as many languages as possible, even if it's only subtitles.

Zum Beispiel, eine deutsche Version wäre zu empfehlen.
А конечно, вам нужно русская версия для русских игроков.
日本のプレーヤーでしょうから、日本語版も必要と思います。
你们也要中文译文。

Ok, en tout les cas, je ne reculerais pas de se projet sans avoir une raison valable...

I think the issue of translation was discussed on this forum a couple of years ago, but, as you can guess, it wasn't really a priority back then. I remember posting to say that as a French native speaker, I'd very much like to help on translating the game into French if needed. Just translating the subtitles could be a good start (and would require quite a lot of work already!).

The funny thing is that I actually started learning English with KQ3 - the first words I had to look up in a dictionary were, among many others, "feed" for "feed the chickens", lol.... and then all the weird ingredients like "mandrake root powder"  8)

I bet you used Mandrake Root Powder a lot in your daily use of english!  ;)

Same happend to me though, I too started learning my first few english words from playing KQ.

Ah ok !
I've never played King's Quest III
I can not run the first games on my PC...

PS: I am still awaiting a response for the dubbing...

Simon--we did receive your email about that, but as it's a fairly complicated process and uch we're still discussing it. We will get back to you when we have an answer for you. :)

Symon what did you think of the first episode of The Silver Lining as it currently stands?
Title: Re: Game in French ?

It looks to me to be a good game but not play in my native language I still poses quite a problem for the understanding of history, I am not a great professional in the English language , that is why I propose to French dubbing with the help of talented actors, translators and confirmed.
In short, the duty to translate each sentence in my native language gives me a bitter taste. It needs a game dubbing !!!

Of course, however, research must start acting as soon as possible! I already have some person in the hands to double the first episode. Doubling may take some time, and you wait longer it will be to do with the translator, the actors will not be available at all times.
We must get started quickly. I think you understand.

I think it would be very easy to translate. You just need to open the data.tsl with 7zip (or other achiver software who can open zip files) and change the texts/pictures/sounds with translated one.

I've already made some french translations (Dink Smallwood (http://www.dinknetwork.com/file/dink_smallwood_french/), Torchlight (http://www.kazaam.net/transmod) and most of the Densha Otoko BBS (http://densha.cracrayol.org/)). If you want, I can help you to made a french translation.

I'm working in the Spanish translation (unofficially, of course) but I'd want it to be "sanctioned" (dunno if it has the same meanining in English) prior to release it. "Sanctioned" means "revised by team" so they can see there's nothing "wrong or unfaithful or offensive" in it (of course, I'll not add such things).

Worst part of translation (not "dubbing") are:
- The images that have some text in it (even thought I didn't have major troubles to edit them) *
- The long long narrator texts without a "dot" in it.... It makes really hard to translate them *

Notes:
- Images: main problem is when you find out that the images where translated to your language in the "official" game. Example: KQ6 signs are translated so awful that you don't know if to edit them accordly to match the "English" ones or to edit them to the "Official translation".
- Text: one problem I found in the old demo was that some of the "keywords" when you chitchat with some characters need to be in english or program will start doing weird things.
- Text: one problem I found with released game is that when you translate the character's name you have to change also the "speech" folder name. Example: "narrator" is "narradora" in Spanish, so you have to change the folder name too.
- Subtitles: also, I found a problem, the first video doesn't have subtitles support so if you add them, program just ignore them... It's a pity.

Why would you want subtitles during the first video?  Nobody says anything.

Why would you want subtitles during the first video?  Nobody says anything.
Because the "To Roberta" is easily to know what it says but the "To those who dare to dream" is not. There's also the "proudly presents" and the "Happy 21st Birthday - King Alexander and Princess Rosella" flag.
Even the "The Silver Lining" has a proper translation (even though I'm not going never to edit the image that's why I complain about the lack of subs support) in Spanish wich would help to understand the overall meaning of the game title.

EDIT off-topic: BTW, TSL runs like charm in Linux 64bits :-D with integrated graphic card using Wine. Thanks!

Sorry for reply twice but this' important enough I think.

These are the issues you'll find if you translate the game (maybe there're others but I've not found them yet):

1 - Hardcoded strings (aka "not translatabled")
> Some characters name. Example: "Guard" when the guard dogs speaks can't be translated.
> The "Select a topic" string when chitchatting.
> The "Goodbye" topic string. If you translate that keyword, the chitchat window will not close so you can't go any further in the game.

2 - Lack of subtitles in the intro video (there're people who doesn't understand a word of English, example: my mother XD )

3 - Character name hardcoded to speech folder name. Remember, if you translate a character's name, you have to rename the folder accordly. Example: "Narrator" translated as "Narradora", so in speech folder, rename folder "Narrator" to "Narradora" too.

Franz, if you want to translate the text to spanish officially, that's ok, if you agree to understand that the translations must be done under our rules and capabilities. Menaing nobody touches the art of the game but us and that there are things that we cannot translate right away, but maybe will consider to do so after the team is available.

If you want to do a full translation of the text, we can provide the tools to do so (the conversation editor), but again, things like logos and even main menu asset, we may not be able to get translated right away. Once all 5 episodes are out there, we could consider to include a patch for those.

Subtitles for movies we could be able to translate, since the movies have a subtitles file and that's all text. So, in theory you can do a subtitle for the "To Roberta" lines.

Same with others that want to do it for their native language. What we need you to understand beforehand is that we are scrambling to get other episodes out and so things like the menu's episode names for example, we may not be able to translate right away.

Also, if you have any desire to translate the game, you need to have a fully QA support team to test the game in the different languages.

What we can offer is to give you the conversation tool with all the files, then, when they are ready, you can send them our way, we'll build with those files, and then we'll hand the you the build for testing.

Like I said, the whole thing may not be able to be fully in your native language yet, but at the very least all the narrations, conversations, etc will be.

Contact Adrienne Elliot if you are interested (Waltzdancing here in the forums)

Thanks!
Cesar

Franz, if you want to translate the text to spanish officially, that's ok, if you agree to understand that the translations must be done under our rules and capabilities.
I want, in fact, I'm at 80% of translation. And I fully understand you're overhelmed with next episodes, of course.

Menaing nobody touches the art of the game but us and that there are things that we cannot translate right away, but maybe will consider to do so after the team is available.
Ok, I understand none touches the art. I'll ask Adrienne if it could be possible to provide translation so you (when have spare time) could "translate" the art.

If you want to do a full translation of the text, we can provide the tools to do so (the conversation editor), but again, things like logos and even main menu asset, we may not be able to get translated right away. Once all 5 episodes are out there, we could consider to include a patch for those.
Is/will be any place to post info about "translation" issues? I mean: just like a bug-report. They don't need to be all fixed but acknowledged so if there're other translators to other languages can see they questions answered there.

And, if in a future after complete release of TSL, if team is kind enough to create full translations, they can look directly for issues and not have to fight to find them.

Subtitles for movies we could be able to translate, since the movies have a subtitles file and that's all text. So, in theory you can do a subtitle for the "To Roberta" lines.
I tried that yet, that's why I asked for them. I'm not sure if they got "black" colour so I can't see them, I'll try it later with the birthday flag.

Same with others that want to do it for their native language. What we need you to understand beforehand is that we are scrambling to get other episodes out and so things like the menu's episode names for example, we may not be able to translate right away.
Of course I understand it. And I don't have any hurry in finish it ('cause I understand English) but I want to give a chance as soon as my capabilities let it, to non-english speakers play the game too and enjoy this wonderful game.

Also, if you have any desire to translate the game, you need to have a fully QA support team to test the game in the different languages.
I know how hard and complex a translation of a program (a game in this case) can be... I really know >.<

What we can offer is to give you the conversation tool with all the files, then, when they are ready, you can send them our way, we'll build with those files, and then we'll hand the you the build for testing.
That'd could be great so I don't have to worry more about having added a "new line" where it doesn't belongs to. Thanks game log!

Like I said, the whole thing may not be able to be fully in your native language yet, but at the very least all the narrations, conversations, etc will be.
That'd be enough for most non-english players :-)

Contact Adrienne Elliot if you are interested (Waltzdancing here in the forums)
Thanks for pointing to the proper person of the team :-) I'll contact him (or her, never found the difference in French genre names >.< ) in a moment.

Thanks!
Cesar
Thanks to you too ;-)

Do you need Spanish-speaking voice actors?  I volunteer!
