Title: Torrent possibility
Post by: Tolin on July 09, 2010, 01:17:38 AM
I recall reading that part of the agreement was that the game had to be distributed through the site... would it be reasonable or possible to help alleviate some of the strain by setting up a torrent tracker hosted through postudios.com?  That way those of us with the game already can help others get it a bit faster...  I'd be on board with setting myself up as a seed for that purpose.

No torrents for now, please.

Thanks for the idea, though!

why is that?

I guess they are kinda categorized with illegal s***.  I mean that's what most people ( WHY IS EVERYBODY LOOKING AT ME???? :P) use/have used them for.

Really? How odd. It's not as if torrents themselves are illegal. Ah well.

This restriction brings up an interesting point... what about the various
gaming-related sites around the net who will undoubtedly upload Part 1 to their
sites and distribute from their own servers?  I absolutely respect the position
and decision the team has made, however I don't really see how hosting a
torrent file FROM your servers is that much different than the direct download
method, unless the peer to peer nature of torrent files IS the problem.

Not really trying to argue a point here, just stating my opinion.  As I said,
I respect the team's position and will wholly support what they choose.

Yay!  This is my 100th post!

That's true. POS doesn't really have control over what other people do, though, so maybe they won't be held liable for the actions of others? Maybe there will be a note on the download page saying "Please do not make a torrent out of this file!" and then after that, the situation is out of their hands?

*shrug* It's the restriction we were given, so we're working with it. I'm not sure if there will be a note on the DL page, but that's a good idea to put one there!

It won't stop some, of course, but the more scrupulous, at least, would abide by it. It's like a padlock. It doesn't keep thieves out, it just keeps honest people honest. :)

I like downloading from torrents, illegal or not.

if legal, it is often faster, and doesn't screw with website servers.  if illegal... I prefer not to talk about it.

a torrent would be cool and might solve the site crashing possibilities, but if you aren't allowed to, that sucks.

one will get out anyway, most likely.  kinda like with AGDI and their VGA remakes. even when the old games were taken off, (when they were working on the new ones) you could still find em all over the place.  so shutting them down wouldn't really do much to the game itsself.
