Title: What was your first KQ game?
Post by: thatgreekguy on July 12, 2010, 03:21:33 PM
I'm sure this has been asked many time before, but seeing as how I just started an account here I thought i would ask.
Mine was actually the first game, my parents had an old Apple and I remember my dad trying to get out of the witches house.  I never really got to play it because it looked really hard for me, but a few year later, I think I was about 6 or 7, we got King's Quest 5 for the NES.  Yes I never did play many of these games growing up, but the ones I had I enjoyed beyond belief.
So my question is: What was your first King's Quest game, or what was your first adventure game?

Kings quest 1! my dad brought home a computer from his work for summer vacation and ended up playing that game (along with digger and striker) most of the summer!

My family got the Roberta Williams anthology about 11 or 12 years ago. And we played them one by one until we completed them all. So I'd say King's Quest 1 as well.

I know my parents had KQs 5-7 and Laura Bow 2, when I was little. KQVI didn't work, much to my dismay, but I still have the Guidebook and such from it!

If I had to guess, I'd say my first adventure game was KQV. I remember playing it with my dad in the computer room. XD

I think the very first KQ I played was 2.  That was way, way back in the '80s, when I was still a little kid.  That was the only one I completed for a while...

...and then, about ten years later.  I got the King's Quest Collection and played the others.

Watched my parents play a bit of KQV when I was little (though I didn't actually remember that until I went back and played it for myself and thought it looked rather familiar). The first I played myself was 7 as a kid. Wasn't until senior year of high school that I really thought about the fact that said 7 on it and I should look at the previous ones. (Had no idea Alexander and Graham even existed! :o)

We (my dad, my siblings, and I... my mom is not a computer person) played King's Quest together when I was growing up. I think the first one we were playing together was 4 or 5. Then, when we beat 6 together, I wondered about the others; so with some difficulty just finding the disks and getting things to run, etc., I went back and played through 2-6 on my own. Then, I realized that I hadn't played KQ1: it turns out it was on our oldest computer and required a 5 1/4 floppy to play. :o So, then I beat that grumbling about the awful graphics and the impossibility of seeing what was going on the whole time. :P ...then I redid the others again to be thorough. :P

Then, there was 7 and we beat that together, and then we waited forever for MoE... I was the most hopeful that it wouldn't be too terrible of a departure or that it would do a good job of blending in action elements... I was... ...disappointed... :P ...and now I'm here. ;P So, I guess that turned out nicely. ;)

Hahaha, 5 1/4 floppy disks ftw!  :P

I remember the first few games playing with a CGA screen, was that 16 colors or so? I can't recall!

My first was KQ1, then I played through the series in order except for some reason I can't remember I couldn't get ahold of 4 until years later after I had played all the way through 7.

The first one I saw was KQ2, the first one I played was KQ6!

My first exposure to the series was KQ5 when I saw my uncle playing it.  Because of that, I found out a friend had the whole series (for the time), and first she let me borrow KQ6, then later 1-5.  So 6 was my first time actually playing.

Prior to that I hadn't played adventure games - mostly just multiplayer NES stuff like Double Dragon II, TMNT 1-3, and Gauntlet with my siblings.  But I got into Quest for Glory since I loved KQ so much (I should dig that back out...), and my brother got into Monkey Island.

KQ1 was the first for me.... WAAAAY back in the day.   :D

Beloved Tandy 1000, where are you no--- oh wait, you're in the next room.

Aside from the KQ series, Police Quest and Space Quest have solidly shared
the position of favorite adventure game series with KQ...  I loved them all for
various reasons...  Nothing quite like bringing a serial killer to justice... stupid
Baines.  Nothing like shoving a ladder down your janitor overalls and being
mocked in hilarious, tongue-in-cheek ways.  The Laura Bow series also has
a soft spot in my heart, though not as prominently as the others do.

Travesty though it may be, I never actually played the GK games.

I wanted to slaughter Cedric through KQ5... and I REALLY want to disable the
voice for him because I don't want to listen, but I want to play the game again
I just can't stand his voice.  *sigh*

We had both KQ1 and KQ2 for the Amiga when I was a young, young child.  My brother actually terrified me with the wolf screens (doo-doo-doo-do-doo-DOOOOOOOO) to the point that I wouldn't go near the computer and we had to get rid of the games, hahahah.

I refound my love for King's Quest when our first PC came with KQ7, and I ordered the King's Quest collection after that.  So technically, while I watched (and might have played) KQ1 and 2 first, I remember playing KQ7 first more.

King Quest 1 on an Apple IIc, on many 5"1/2 disks to change or flip. it had a very small monochrome monitor (green and black).

I can't begin to remember what my first KQ game was, but my absolute favorite of the entire series thus far is without a doubt KQ6. I loved that game as a kid. I would say that 5 is my least favorite for one reason: When I was younger, I always got scared of the blob things in mordack's castle. So it's actually been a very long time since I've played 5... Three was pretty cool, and 7 was hilarious. I LOVED that mocking bird! And I actually kind of liked MoE, just in a different way. In terms of the continuity of KQ, it kind of sucked. But in it's own right it was a good game. And I just loved some of the voice acting in it.

KQ1 on a Tandy 1000 EX. Still got the disk, manual and box, but not the computer. I was just a kid back then and I loved the game very much. I learn basic English (it's not my first language) and it define my choice of gaming experience for years to come.

I played all games except for 7 and 8.

You played on a Tandy 1000 too? Wow! Do you remember the save game system? That was so complicated to use! No hard drive! And messages displaying under the commands you typed! I couldn't read a thing 'cause it scrolled so fast! But the Tandy speaker's had better sound than the PC's. Good times...  :)

Heh... the save system I remember was solely disk-based.  Luckily... and I don't know if it was a stock feature or if my brother/parents forked out extra money for it, but our 1000 had two 5 1/4 drives, so it was as simple as having a dedicated 'SAVE' disc for us.  They also bumped up the RAM in in... I think it had a whopping 64 mb or so.

I fell into the moat a lot of times.  :D

I had a 3 1/2 drive and tried to load QFG2 on it. Not a good idea. It took 20 minutes to get my character from the inn to outside... not because of the slowdown, but 'cause the computer kept asking me to swap disk back and forth. It gets far worse if you try to go into the alleys...

My favorite KQ game.... wow. Tough. I would say in spirit, VI.  But, from the technical standpoint of what makes a great game.... Kings quest III: To heir is human.  That was back before I used hintbooks, and possibly the first kq game I ever played. I might have played kq1 once before that, but I remember we had kq3 on our IBM pc. I didn't know who I was or what.  The Manannan fear factor too.  I just remember getting off the pirate ship and saying, Whoa, I'm in another land! Then to find out daventry! I knew enough of kq1 to know about daventry, but like i said, I played kq1 in passing, maybe watching others play it. I really got INTO 3.  I was most excited to get KQ5 after seeing the graphics.  So yes, in conclusion: Best in spirit: KQ6. Best Technically: KQ3 Best innovation: KQ5. And I definetely had to buy a hint book eventually to beat kq3 (I still have the old hintbook).
