Title: My new avatar
Post by: dark-daventry on July 12, 2010, 07:42:40 PM
So earlier today I dabbled a little in photoshop and came up with the below image. I'm getting tired of my current avatar and figured it was time for a new one. But before I officially make it my new avatar, I want to get everyone's opinions on it. So let me know what you think!

It's cool looking, but I think it's a bit too diagonal. You kinda have to tilt your head to read it.  :P

Yeah, I was thinking of changing the orientation of the text. The only problem is that it will be smaller if I end up making it straight. The forum has a 200x200 pixel limit, right?

I haven't heard of such a limit. I remember Raf's avatar in particular once taking up half the forum.

Really? I don't seem to recall that... Well, if the limit is bigger than I thought, then I suppose I should be off to tinker a little more with photoshop. Or maybe tomorrow. I'm too busy watching youtube videos right now... But overall, what do you think of the image itself? I notice that my photoshop skills have improved over the years... Thank you high school lol

I like the image, nice work.  I actually didn't realize your first one was readable text at first  :P

Technically, it's not my first. I've had many before the current one. All of them I made myself over the years in photoshop.

Originally, the image I have now as my avatar was supposed to be animated, but for some reason the animation isn't working. And I just never got around to fixing it or anything. But I figure with a new forum, why not get a new avatar to go with it?

It's an Avatar!

If you like it more then your current one you should use it and not beeing influenced by what other people think!

But getting feedback also helps improve both my artistic ability and my photoshop skills.

I think it'd be fine if the text was at about the same orientation as your current one. No need to make it completely straight.

Yeah, I'm with the guys.  The text is a little catty-wompus.  Otherwise, nice work!  Do you take requests? ;)

Title: Re: My new avatar

It's referring to the sound that's made when a cat falls off the counter and doesn't land on its feet - *wompus*

It's probably not a word, but it reminds me of cuckoo bananas.

I never heard a cat make a sound like that...

*plans of testing it out by throwing away every cat he comes across from now on*

I've never had anyone covet my photoshopping skilz before. I'll tell you now though that my "skilz" aren't neccesarily that good. I just mess around sometimes and end up getting good results. I've got a reworked version of the avatar I posted above, but I ain't posting it right now. It's 2:01 AM in my timezone right now. I should be sleeping, but I'm not. I'm not going to be getting up easily in seven hours XD

I can't answer the first, but I can tell you this much: I used to be a caregiver with the elderly at an assisted living facility.  They used to use that word ALL THE TIME (it must be an old people word :P) when I was making their beds.  I gather by its context that it means jagged, or not straight.

And d-d, I might have a request for you. ;) Let me know if you are willing to accept my challenge.

That depends on time. I've got lots of stuff to do coming up. For one, I've got my part time job at my local grocery store (4.5 years and counting...) and some stuff for the team coming up... And of course my mod duties here on the forum... But you might as well tell me your request so I can see what I can whip up. I only wish I had photoshop CS5. I'm two versions behind at CS3. I just love the content aware fill feature in CS5... Only a few more months until I can officially get myself a student discount on it when I begin college in September...

And now for the update: Below you will find an updated version of the avatar. I want to hear your feedback!

I was totally blown away when I first saw content-aware fill/delete. I think I'm getting CS5 (student discount) soon - extremely excited for it!

Once I get settled in school myself, I'll be getting a student discount. In fact, I'll be getting the most significant student discount available, as my school is the biggest purchaser of Adobe Products in North America... But that won't be until september most likely...

If I remembered how, I would lol. I sadly don't even have access to photoshop right now... And I haven't even upgraded yet. They told me to wait six months for some odd reason...

I am an opensource freak, but that bias aside:
http://www.gimp.org/
that is a great photoshop alternative and it's free.  I think they have a windows port now.

I know all about GIMP, I've used it before, and frankly I'm partial to Photoshop. I'm more accustomed to the interface. But maybe that's just me.

Have you tried GIMPshop (http://www.gimpshop.com/)? It's an interface overhaul for GIMP that supposed to make it feel more like Photoshop. I wouldn't know how similar it is since I've never used Photoshop, but you may want to try it.

 I'm partial to Paint.Net. Photoshop came with the latptop the school gave me a month ago, went to try and use it for something, but I realized how different it was and decided what I was trying to do wasn't worth learning the interface right then. :P

I know plenty of people who prefer GIMP, but I use Photoshop simply because it came with my computer. I really love the program, but to be fair, I've never actually used GIMP, but from what I know it's very similar to Photoshop.

I much prefer photoshop over GIMP, and I've used both before. I learned photoshop first, so that's probably why I'm partial to it.

Its a lot better to look at than my previous one, and its my best photoshopped avatar to date. I'm rather proud of it. I think I can safely say that the cloud filter in Photoshop is my specialty. I LOVE the background in that image. all it took was mixing some cloud layers and changing the opacity And the blending options. The result was pretty good, I gotta admit!
