Me, I'm more of a turtle than a cat as far as accumulating posts is concerned. Slow but steady, and rest assured, either I'll get there, or I'll die, or this site has ceised (?sp) to exist. Only those two last things will keep me from accumulating lots of posts. BTW, if you'd make the sum of all the posts I've made so far on all the forums I'm visiting, I'd definitely be a royal heir for sure. But, since I'll have to do with this one board, it might take a bit longer. 8)

Hey, my ancestors are French Canadian, so I'll call anything French that needs the label. I still call em french fries, the whole freedom fries thing was ridiculous. I'm not angry at France, even if they do odd things like sending weapons + stuff to Iraq. I still eat French food, after all.

I haven't been paying attention to my status. I love chocolate, my mom gave my some easter chocolate, Hersheys kisses and Reeces peanut butter cups, plus marshmellow easter bunny. I also love icecream, there's tin roof sundae, with chocolate swirls and peanuts, mint chocolate chip, rocky road, cookie dough and fudge tracks, which has peanut butter and chocolate.

I understand why France is pacifist in it's policies, they've had so many wars in Europe. I'm not pacifist, I think fighting should be a last result, but sometimes you must defend yourself. However, peace should be sought by all means.

Well, I'd upload my KQ6 CD but I don't have the bandwith right now (being home from college, I'm back to 56k). But I have noticed workers laying cable recently, maybe I'll convince them to lengthen the DSL lines a tad as well. ;)

OB, as far as I know, DSL doesn't need new cables, but then again, neither does cable. To DSL, you only need to be not too far away from a point where all the telephone lines in your neighborhood converge (can't think of the exact word right now). 8)
Prob is, I'm 20 feet outside of the border of the nearest phone center. I have a neighbor two doors down with DSL, but our house has phone lines with a center in a different city (we're right on the border of the two cities). And the phone center we are on doesn't support DSL, since it is in an old part of town and DSL hasn't been implemented with it yet. At any rate, I'll just ask my neighbor if I can link to his DSL. ;)

Eh, with satellite you still need to be connected to the phone for uploading, cuz apparently satellite beams don't travel very well both ways. Downloading would be faster, but people would still try to call when you're on the internet. Why can't there just be an internet type splitter? Like have the phone be directly hooked up to the computer and when someone calls, your downloads slow down a bit but you can still use the phone by the computer? It must be possible...
I know the market is huge, after all.

Well, I don't know about USA, but here in Canada there's something called Internet Call Waiting, where dial-up users subscribe to it and they can get a pop-up message whenever an incoming call comes in. You can either accept (where I think it will disconnect and you can answer the call), reject or play a recording to them.
I was dying for that kind of thing back in my dial-up days. Ever since I got cable, the phone thing was never an issue.
As far as voice and data being on the same phone line, isn't that what DSL does?
Going back on topic (briefly)...
After this post, I will be 2 posts away from Storm and nearing Great Oracle status (450 posts)! Woohoo!
Okay, now back to the benefits and downsides of various broadband...

That was true for a long time, but a few weeks/months ago I read in an article it was now possible to do it both ways. How else do ya think satellite telephones work? What
is true, is that a satellite beam going down cannot, at the same time, go up. So maybe it switches constantly, or it uses 2 beams. I don't know the technical details, what I do know is you don't need a telephone anymore, and it costs muchos money.

It's the same phone line, but it's divided into two parts. One part for DSL, one part for telephone. You see, telephones don't need a lot of bandwith, DSL does, but every normal telephone line can provide that bandwith. You can also take ISDN, one telephone line, two (or more) SN's (subscriber numbers, so two actual telephone numbers), so no incoming calls cutting off internet sessions. 8)
It looks like we might get wireless Internet here by Christmas, my dad read about it on megapipe. I suppose it would be called "antenna broadband" or something. Should be nice, cuz then we can all be on the internet at once without needing any interconnections. It is not super-fast, but it is estimated to be about 1 megabit per second or something. Still pretty dang good compared to 56k (20x faster).
1 megabit per second? Wow, that's twice the speed of cable too!
Yonkey, please don't confuse bit and byte and cable is (currently) 10 Mbit per second. 8)
