Title: Pros and Cons: an objective standpoint
Post by: Raydio on September 21, 2010, 06:03:26 PM
here's a few random thoughts i've put together regarding what's been seen thus far.

pros:

*the game takes place in the land of the green isles-- everyone (on this forum, at least) probably knows how good kq6 was. from a new game director's standpoint, i can very much see how this was probably the best setting to choose in many ways. cool 8)
*the story is intriguing, dark, and mysterious.  -- this sort of stuff is right up my alley and a personal preference, so kudos there
*it's not King's Quest 8! --it felt good to not be running around stabbing chickens or skeletons every 5 seconds.
*more animated cute things --
a magnet!? the return of the hole in the wall? wtf is that cup doing@!?
i'm likin' it!
*Finally being able to see some of what's inside Chessland-- and not lose my head over it
*the extension of the marketplace on the isle of the crown--  i really hope the homeless lamp peddler gets his genie and three wishes.  his first wish: a full set of teeth
*there's nobody creepy looking out the window above ali's bookshop-- 'nuff said

cons:

*the magic scroll limits the areas in which you can travel at any given time. -- i like being able to explore, even if it's not being worked around a puzzle.  I wanna go say what's up to the beast! he should be the proud father of a litter of werewolf puppies by now
*eluding to finding out whats been happening to Daventry's royal family all this time. -- I don't want to know.  I want them to face great adversity at least once a year.. just enough to keep them on their toes and me on my butt in front of a computer.
*no cliffs of logic, or major "i'm going to solve this puzzle, or die trying" instances. -- however, this is just episode 2! there shall be more opportunities for that, and i'm sure the storyline will come full circle eventually.
*i'm a selfish liberal, so I do wish the game were longer.  though, i do not envy the developers who have sacrificed many years in dedication for this.  :)
*no land of the dead, at least not yet - it would be fun see graham play the xylo'bone' to get himself out of some hijinks at least one time.
*Graham whining, wondering what's been happening to his family.  shut up, put the feather in your cap and get back to work!

these opinions did come from the heart.  all in all, despite little rants above, I very much enjoyed the first two episodes and look forward to the third episode and the rest of the series.  thanks, TSL team!

No spoilers here but several of the items in your cons list are already addressed in future episodes.

i'm gonna lose my head in chessland?   :o
you just leave ali's bookshop just out of this!  :P no creepers!

seriously though, nice! i figured as much, just wanted to give my two cents up to this point!  unfortunately, i don't have a ton of time to read some of the longer threads to see what's been adressed and not addressed quite yet..  :-\

I think almost every thing about this episode was a "pro" except one thing...

Jollo!
I get it, he's a jester! Buttt, shouldn't he be on pretty freaking good terms with Alexander? He was all bent out of shape about Cassima in KQ6 and nobody knew for sure she was in trouble. Alexander's in a coma and he's all "pull my finger" silly? Ehhhhh, I'm confused. :P

Still, that was an awesome way to get a silly item. :P

I was put off by his demeanor as well. He should be at least somewhat sympathetic towards Graham.

that is a good point, but every tragedy could use a moment of comic relief..  he was in a pretty good mood it seemed. :D

I definitely enjoyed the comic relief, but I just felt it was out of character for him. I think that the team has gotten every other canon character right on point but I think they missed the boat on Jollo!

Also, was that chest hair? :P
