Title: Best movies of the year so far
Post by: Cez on October 04, 2010, 10:18:03 AM
So... what are yours?

Mine? I just saw them back to back.

Let me in --I'm such a fool for never watching the full swedish version. I started it but wasn't hooked, then got distracted, then didn't see it. Then I went to see the American version saturday night, a little unwilling. I'm so glad I did. What a great movie. Chloe Moretz CAN ACT.

Never Let Me Go --Saw this last night. Man, what a heart-aching story. And the 3 leads were splendid. Of course, I have loved Keira Knightley a lot since I saw her in Pride and Prejudice and The Jacket, but Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield were amazing as well. The three of them really sell you the devastating story. I was really, really touched by it.

Other movies I have really really enjoyed this year are Scott Pilgrim and Kick-Ass (Again, Moretz stole the show), and, of course, Inception!

Movies I'm looking forward to:

Hereafter (Clint Eastwood directing, and Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard in the cast! and a ghost story! should be awesome!)
Black Swan (love Aronofsky's work)
Blue Valentine (Been hearing a lot of great stuff about Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams --It's probably the "Revolutionary Road" of this year).
Buried (Just watching the trailer makes me claustrophobic!)
Fair Game (looks great and have been a fan of Naomi Watts since I saw her in 21 Grams).
Love and Other Drugs (Hathaway and Gyllenhaal should make this movie work).
Monsters (Will probably suck, but I'm looking forward to see it.
Skyline (same as above)
Tron Legacy (w00t!)
My Soul to take (I've always loved Wes Craven's stuff)
Rabbit Hole (I've been wanting to see a good movie with Nicole Kidman in it since Dogville).
The Social Network (was not originally attracted, but it's been getting a lot of buzz).
Scr4m (Again, love Wes, and love Neve Campbell).

I second your enthusiasm for Tron: Legacy and I'd also like to add Inception to the list.

oh s***, how could I have forgotten Inception! It wasn't The Dark Knight, but it was still great.

MACHETE!!!!!! All the way.  That guy from desperado always needed a lead role.  It sort of reminds me of a schwartznegger movie.  Makes me miss the west coast as well.  Other than that, inception was good.

Dinner for fools, whatever it was called, made me laugh.

So far, I liked (in no particular order):

Inception
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
Prince of Persia
Iron Man 2
Percy Jackson and the lighting thief
Alice in wonderland
How to train your dragon

Was really looking forward to The Last Airbender but that ended up being just horrible. :P

I don't get to the movie theater much but I do need need need to second How to Train Your Dragon because I loved it.

I also saw Iron Man 2, which was awesome.

And I can't believe you guys didn't list The Town, you must not have seen it. One of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. (Which I was surprised about because, hi, Ben Affleck? Fo' rizzle?)

Alice in Wonderland was spectacular. I was a little disappointed in Anne Hathaway's performance (because she's SUCH an incredible actress, but I felt as though she could have done a bit more "wacky" with the role she had and that she was fairly overshadowed by everyone else because of that). I also have come to expect more from Johnny Depp, but I understand he can't be quite as over-the-top when he's not the main character.

I haven't seen Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief all the way through yet -- we had it on Derek's TV while we were getting ready to go out but then we, y'know, went out. :P I do REALLY want to finish it though, even though I found it pretty predictable up through what we had seen.

I'm looking forward to Hereafter and Love and Other Drugs, but otherwise I'm not overly excited about any movies on the horizon. I mean, they look good but I'll probably just Red Box them instead of going to the theater.

I do want to see The Town. Forgot to add that in.

I saw a preview for Love & Other Drugs the other day, and I'm honestly not remotely interested. I really like Anne Hathaway, but I think I kind of dislike Jake Gyllenhaal, and it looks incredibly formuliac to me.

But! Movies I've seen and really liked this year: Inception, Iron Man 2, Alice in Wonderland.... I know there were others, heh.

Also, how has no one mentioned being super excited for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one?!?

I mostly agree with a lot of these.

But wow, a lot of love for Alice and Wonderland.  I'm truly surprised.  I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a Tim Burton movie.  The film was just all over the place.  The plot was too loopy and strange for its own good and ended up being very hard to follow after a while for me.  Most of the characters, while fun to look at, said things that very literally didn't make sense half the time (and not in a good "hey, this is how people talk in Wonderland" way.)  The visuals were cool though (as usual in Tim Burton movies.)  But yeah, what a let down.

I didn't list the ones I'm looking forward to, but this is definitely one of them! :D

Yup, I have to agree with everyone else. Inception, Iron Man 2, Alice in Wonderland, etc, etc, etc . . .

I'm not looking forward to a lot of movies right now, and I have rarely gone to see movies on a whim as of late. The only movie that I was taking a chance on was Easy A. I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be a very entertaining comedy. I hadn't seen a good comedy in awhile, and I thought something had to be said about this movie in particular. However, one movie that I suggest gets denied from any kind of "Movie of the Year" list is Catfish. In fact, I will dub the movie as "the physical manifestation of disappointment". I hope that gets my point across.  :P

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader!  That was one of my fave Narnia books, I can't wait to see how they adapt it onscreen.

I just saw Easy A yesterday. It was amusing--not quite as good as Mean Girls, but fun--and did have a few twists that I was pleasantly surprised at. Glad it was entirely predictable. :)

I just saw Easy A and loved it!  It actually had a good message to it.

OMG I totally forgot about Easy A! I do plan on seeing that in the future, although I feel like it might be a good date movie so.... probably gonna wait to see if I can drum up a date? :P

I haven't seen Iron Man 2, but I wasn't wowed by the first one. Still, want to see it.

Haven't seen Alice in Wonderland either.

Oh, and yes, I guess I missed Harry Potter lol. I just keep the list of movies I want to watch in Netflix and was going from that. I didn't add something like HP cause there's no way my friends will let me pass on that one lol

and yeah, Love and Other Drugs looks formulaic --I normally wouldn't want to see it, but I like the actors a lot. They could make that movie interesting.

I also want to see Easy A.

Oh, and another great movie I've seen this year: The Kids are Alright. Julianne Moore and Annette Bening should get the Oscars they've been deserving for a while.

I think you'd really like Alice in Wonderland, definitely check it out. :)

I thought Alice in Wonderland was good simply because of it's "Tim Burton" charm, but I have to say, I felt like the plot was lacking. I also am getting annoyed at Johnny Depp's weird accents. All the more power to him for pulling them off, but the Mad Hatter's voice was reminiscent to his past voices. I found his Mad Hatter voice to be a mix of Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow. I don't want to sound like a 'hater' though. I like Tim Burton for being the mad genius that he is. Not to mention that I am also aspiring to go to CalArts (the school he went to), which is right here in my town. I guess I'm looking for a fresh idea from him, cause all of these Tim Burton remakes are becoming tiresome.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tim Burton, but I just didn't think Alice in Wonderland was his best work.  Or even good work.  ;)  It doesn't hold a candle to most of his other movies.  I blame it on crappy plot that scraps what was good about the books and tries to shoehorn in a "strong and intelligent girl resists societal norms" plotline.  Yuck.

The Legend of the Guardians is the best movie ever.

Inception: BEST MOVIE EVAAR... Do the leo strut! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8fndX_7PqQ
But seriously, it was definitely one of the movies that just grabbed me this year, and I still think back to it.
Toy Story 3: Yep, definitely worth the wait. Best way for that series of movies to come to a close.
Scott Pilgrim: If you didn't get to see the movie, then shame on you. This is an epic win for any video game fan out there and just darn fun.
Iron Man 2: Yep. Saw it and was quite entertained. Loved it.

As to movies coming out soon

Legends of the Guardians: I kinda wanna see this but with friends. How was it everyone?
Reds: Looks like darn good fun
Megamind: Wasn't as impressed at first, but its slowly shaping up, semi-interested.
Harry Potter and the Deathy Hollows: Do I really gotta say anymore  ;D

Really? no one else liked Machete? Man, it had everything that makes a great movie.  Not to mention my girl Michelle Rodriguez.  Oh well, I still like Arnold style action flicks, what can I say? If Conan 3 came out I'd probably watch it. Maybe even a sequel to Kindergarten Cop.

Gave me a great idea for a movie. How about a movie that mocks the job of a community college campus security guard? Eh? It could be a sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop. It will have high expectations, and then when everybody leaves the theater, they leave with the feeling of remorse and regret.

Ah, like I did when I left the theatre from seeing "He's Just Not That Into You."

I've been wanting to see Stone for a while, although early reviews aren't too great. Hopefully it's not a limited release.

But c'mon, it can't be THAT bad. It has Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro (although "The Score" might say otherwise...). :P

Also, I want to see The Town, Social Network, Narnia when it comes out (although I'm not expecting much based on the trailer), and The Fighter. I'm hoping Christian Bale gets his first Oscar Nod for that - something he's been incredibly deserving of for a long time now.

I  am a big fan of such a variety of films drama,action,period,war,scifi/fantasty(of course)thriller
all sorts. I am planning on seeing the film Buried and I was wondering if any one has seen it and what they thought of it.

Did Shutter Island come out this year?  If so, then that was an incredible film.  I highly recommend it!
