Title: New finds on GOG - I love this site!
Post by: wilco64256 on October 14, 2010, 08:43:12 AM
I wander over from time to time to see what goodies I'm missing, and this morning I found both Phantasmagoria games, The Journeyman Project 2, a double-pack with both Betrayal at Krondor and Betrayal at Antara, and Unreal Tournament 2004.  And that's just before I reached my self-given birthday budget.  Sheesh.

Nice!

Weldon, have you watched Spoony's LP of Phantasmagoria 2? :)

UT2004? It's not that "old" yet...

They actually seem to have some games that have only come out in the last 2-3 years or so but aren't normally workable under Windows Vista or Win7.

So the games didn't work with the operating systems that existed when they were released? That doesn't make sense...???

Haha, I know the feeling. I've bought quite a few games recently, so I'm afraid to spend any more money at the moment, even for cheap games.  Plus I already have a bunch of games that I haven't beaten yet, and I want to finish at least most of those before getting more. Icewind Dale looks pretty good.

I already have Betrayal at Krondor, but someday I need to beat it WITHOUT using some sort of money trick. It's a great game, but being unable to grind for stats/money annoys me since I'm always worried that I'll end up in a situation where I'm too weak to beat an enemy that I need to fight and won't be able to do anything about it. Especially with Patrus's party.

I also have Antara but my CD crashes a lot. It's a common problem apparently, but if the GOG release doesn't do that, maybe I'll buy it anyway.

Neither do I. I'm just kidding. I don't like to buy anything unless I have enough money to do so. Credit cards just cause problems. The credit card businesses are designed to get their consumers to slip-up so they can make money off of them. Doesn't sound appealing to me.

Yes, you're right. It include Shadows of Undrentide, Hordes of the Underdark and Kingmaker. I'm not sure if it also include ShadowGuard and Witch's Wake. Can you check wilco64256?

I found this link for all the modules:

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/199/index/4746466

Unfortunately, they still require the activation codes and online authentication to play. These codes were included with the purchase of the modules at Bioware Store. So it will be useless to install them unless who have the codes.

Hopefully GOG will sell the rest of the modules in a near future... without the online check.

Man, I just noticed that they released not only the original Icewind Dale, but the sequel as well. I haven't bought any games off of GOG yet. So between Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights Diamond, the Gabriel Knight Trilogy, the King's Quest Collection, and many other titles, I'm gonna be in over my head with gaming (and I'm not even including all of the modern-day games that I'm playing).  :-\

I recommend caution with Icewind Dale II. The game is plagued with horrible slowdowns whenever OpenGL is on and spells are used. I doubt they would have fix that on the digital download. Thankfully, none of these problems are found with the other Infinity Engine games.
Title: Re: New finds on GOG - I love this site!
Post by: Fierce Deity on November 07, 2010, 09:12:45 AM
I liked the first Icewind Dale, and regretted that I didn't play the second one. I can skip Icewind Dale altogether, because it didn't even compare to Baldur's Gate in my opinion. The one game on GOG that I want to get is Neverwinter Nights Diamond. When Neverwinter Nights first came out, my computer wasn't powerful enough to play it, and by the time it was powerful enough to play it, I couldn't find Neverwinter Nights anywhere. So that will be a must for me. I'm still looking into The Temple of Elemental Evil, Fallout 1 and 2, and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Are they any good?
Title: Re: New finds on GOG - I love this site!
Post by: Ravager on November 07, 2010, 12:34:35 PM
Yeah, IWD2 wasn't the best of the Infinity Engine games. It lacked polish, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. IMO, It could have used an expansion. IWD2 came out about the same time as NWN, so the rest is history.

NWN: Diamond is definitely your best choice. I haven't played the other games you mentioned, but I read that ToEE is turn based rather than realtime. While the scope is smaller, it has a better implementation of the D&D ruleset than Bioware. So I heard. If you go with ToEE, be sure to look for fanmade bugfixes and mods.

Of those games, I've only played Arcanum, but I love it. There are tons of ways to build your character. When I first started, I spent a long time just looking through the character creation options.  :P

I'm also interested in Fallout, I'll probably get that soon. Or maybe the Might and Magic 6-pack. Or Divine Divinity. So many choices!  ???

I tried a demo of Divine Divinity once. The whole first chapter was playable. I really wanted to like the game after reading all those wonderful reviews, but in the end, it didn't worked for me.

I was interested in getting Divinity II when it first came out, but I was turned off by the bad reviews and dated graphics. I just like action-RPGs overall, so that's what originally pulled me in. Supposedly, Divine Divinity was some form of a "2D real-time RPG". I never looked into it, but it makes sense why Divinity II would be so decrepit in quality. I think they released an updated version that includes an expansion and runs on a better engine. I saw it on Steam. But I digress.

So what was that about GOG?  ::)

I found this neat site while searching for an English version of simon the sorcerer 5.

Their selection of games is pretty cool. I completed simon 5 in German a while back, but I'll keep an eye on this one.

Just checked on GOG and saw that they have Baldur's Gate II Complete. If there's anything better than Baldur's Gate I, it's Baldur's Gate II. The story was vastly superior, and really brought out the importance of the main character. Also, (without spoiling anything) the expansion for Baldur's Gate II made the entire experience leagues better than itself. In the expansion, you are faced with a moral decision that really impacts the story, as well as how your companions will view you and your moral compass. One of the best RPGs I have ever played, hands down. If you guys get a chance, treat yourselves to this game.  ;D

Post by: Baggins on November 16, 2010, 08:48:44 AM
Yep, I think I mentioned that before. Its the more rare of the versions nowadays. Gog seemed to have included it so to show the main progression of the series (they did the same thing with Space Quest). Still begs the question why they didn't just toss in the KQ1 remake with one of the collections (the final collection would have been a good choice, to make it a 3 pack).
Title: Re: New finds on GOG - I love this site!
Post by: Enchantermon on November 16, 2010, 09:13:14 AM
Yeah, that's weird that they didn't include it, but maybe they figured that anyone who really wanted both could buy the Vivendi collection as well. *shrugs*
Now all I'm missing is KQIV AGI. ^_^

Post by: Baggins on November 16, 2010, 09:41:30 AM
KQ4 AGI is one of those weird things that Sierra should have included in their classic collections. Just for completeness. Its like they destroyed whatever extras they had, and when they went about making there classic collections didn't have it on hand.

Post by: Enchantermon on November 16, 2010, 09:54:36 AM
They didn't destroy it, they just buried it in the desert of New Mexico along with all the unsold copies of E.T. ;)
But yeah, they definitely should have included it, not the least of reasons being that it includes easter eggs not in other versions of the game.

KQ4 AGI is one that I don't find myself missing terribly in the grand scheme of things.  Mainly it's because the artwork seems to have been done natively in the higher res SCI graphics and then filtered down to AGI, so a lot of the screens have random ugly pixels that are the result of the scaling process.  Or maybe I'm just crazy and not reading the low res images correctly.  :)  That said, I LOVE native AGI graphics, as well as native SCI graphics--I just hate when things get scaled or altered from what they were originally supposed to look like.
Title: Re: New finds on GOG - I love this site!
Post by: Baggins on November 16, 2010, 12:39:42 PM
Ya, agreed. Though one thing to note about KQ4AGI is that some of hte screens are graphically different than KQ4. A few extra bushes here or there, and as I recall the facade of the haunted house is different. Covered in stones, IIRC.

Even if it's faulty, completists (such as myself) would like owning it just for the sake of having it. Admittedly it's a pretty silly reason, though. :-\

...and the old King's Quest and Space Quest Collections came with examples of foreign versions of the games. Collectors are interested in a variety of things.

The only thing playing KQ4 AGI for though is the easter eggs specific to it :)

Really? I can't agree with you there. The AGI screens seem definitely drawn with the AGI tools to me....or at least traced, if that was possible back then. They're also based more on the first SCI release of KQ4 rather than the second more popular release which looks completely different. But they all have their differences, enough not to be filtered conversions. Like the scene with the pool with those two trees. The SCI and AGI versions look very different. And the dithered colours. Dithering isn't possible in AGI so that was all drawn by hand manually. And if it was scaled down it wouldn't be dithered properly.

Again, for those who aren't aware and missed it the last 5 times or so I've posted it elsewhere on the internet (and possibly here), some screenshots from all 3 versions:

AGI:

SCI (early):

SCI (later, more popular):

Also note that the pool shape is completely different perspective-wise in the AGI version, so not a simple scale.

I understand that there was apparently two versions of AGI versions as well. The latter versions disabled many of the Easter eggs.

Interesting...I had been under the impression that a lot of the graphics were scaled.  Admittedly it's been quite a while since I've touched the AGI version--I'll have to give it another look.

GOG is taking preorders for The Witcher 2. They explained that this is a rare occasion, but it's for the benefit of CD Projekt RED (their "sister company"). I think this is interesting and is a real break from the norm. However, I personally will be getting The Witcher 2 on Steam, since I already purchased the first Witcher game on Steam. Still, GOG has some bonuses for those who preorder the game from them.

I picked up The Longest Journey the other day from Gog.com. I've been shutting myself away in my dorm until 2 or 3 AM playing that game. I've become addicted to yet another adventure game. As for Broken Sword, I have the first director's cut for the DS (Ironically, an employee at gamestop told me I was not leaving that store until I bought Broken Sword. I say ironically because he didn't try to push an FPS on me. He apparently likes adventure games. Back then, he was just the cool gamestop dude. Now, he's my co-worker.) But considering the broken sword games are all on sale on gog, I am very tempted to give in and buy them... But I really want Revolution to focus on the sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky. Which, if you haven't yet played, download it for the iphone/ipod touch. It's one of the best adventure games I've ever played.

So GOG's big December 14th surprise was unveiled today, which is apparently one new free game, Tyrian 2000 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/tyrian_2000), and discounts on almost everything else they have. Breakdown below courtesy of a member at Through the Looking Glass (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122111&p=2036454&viewfull=1#post2036454).
Quote from: ShadowcatI wanted to know exactly what was on sale, but it didn't seem to be obviously-available information, so I extracted it from the catalogue HTML (thank you Emacs :)

You can actually still get the free demo from the www.dreamfall.com website.  After playing through that I now remember how my one beef with the game was the really quirky interface.  Still a great game, but the setup is just kind of annoying at times.

The first game is great so far, but I've heard good and bad things about Dreamfall. Like combat. I don't want combat in my adventure games... In any case, I'll probably end up buying Dreamfall, but just not yet. I've got to take advantage of gog's huge sale. I just wish the King's Quest games were on sale at gog. I think the packs are overpriced, honestly. Ten bucks is a little steep for me when it comes to those games. They're great games, don't get me wrong, but I just feel the pack should be cheaper. like 5 bucks. That's more appetizing to me, so to speak. And I truly hope gog continues to update it's library for a long time. There's still a lot of games I want to see on it...

Honestly there never should have been combat in Dreamfall.  I found what combat there was (there is VERY little overall) to be extremely simple and annoying more than anything.

I can't help but think of Mask of Eternity with this statement, as that's generally how I felt about the combat in that game.  I didn't mind the fact that it was there, I just wish it had been deeper and better executed.  It's interesting to read developer interviews where they said that they purposefully made the combat easy and shallow so that it wouldn't be too drastically intrusive, but actually, it's the shallowness that makes it so monotonous--just click click click click dead, rinse, repeat--what an odd bit of reasoning.  Anyway, sorry to steer off topic for a sec.  :)

I actually own Dreamfall, and I never got very far into it at all, I think largely because the controls were really awkward.

I can usually get used to most control schemes pretty quickly, so that's not a problem for me. But combat in adventure games, to me, makes it an action adventure game more than an adventure game. But perhaps that's just me. But in any event, I do plan on buying Dreamfall regardless. I'm only in chapter 5 of The Longest Journey, so I'm not at the point of being done with it yet, but Dreamfall would be the next logical game for me to buy. If only it were on gog. Interwbz, here I come!

Only the remake is included, however, which is strange seeing as all other Quest collection come with the AGI originals rather than the remakes...so it's the exact same collection as the one on Direct2Drive and it's $10 cheaper.

They also added The Zork collection. I'm still waiting for Quest for Glory to be added to the site. I'm amazed it hasn't happened yet. The same goes for Leisure Suit Larry, Torrin's Passage and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist. I hope they add those games soon. After all, they've been adding a lot of Activision owned games lately, so hopefully they'll put those up...

The only sierra games I've played are KQ, SQ and that's about it (and I mean that in terms of all the way through, for the entire series). I've played a bits and pieces of PQ, LSL and Black Cauldron. Not much else. I'd like to see Sierra's entire catalog added eventually. It's so rich with properties!

Except for that scene with Freddy and Sadie.  :-*

It's not as explicit as Leisure Suit Larry but there's still plenty of adult humor.

So GoG has been throwing out teasers leading up to a big reveal tomorrow afternoon (EST). The past ones have been:

What game made you dream of the stars?
What game made you ride with the outlaws?
What game made you fear your past?
What game made you go to the underworld?
What game made monsters fear you?

I don't know if these are all referring to the same game or several games from the same catalog or what. However, the one that was put up today caught my eye:

What game made you feel like a hero?

If they've secured the Quest for Glory catalog, I think I might die from happiness. ^_^
The live stream announcement starts with CD Projekt at 12:00 pm EST. GoG hits the stage at 1:00 pm EST. Stoked! :D

I'm hoping to The Mask of Eternity that they got the QfG rights. I haven't played those games yet, and I've been dying to do so. If they can add the entire QfG catalog, I'll be buying them all. We'll find out tomorrow what the game is... I'm hoping it's all different games, that way we'd be getting more games, but I know not to get my hopes up like that.

I don't know if this is related to the questions or not, but GoG has released a new 3-pack series that I've been hoping for a long time that they would get. Alone in the Dark 1, 2 and 3 are now on GoG! (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/alone_in_the_dark) Also included is the promo game Jack in the Dark! Awesome! :D

EDIT: No longer spoiler tagged, because it apparently wasn't related to the hints they've been throwing out. Also, I just missed all but the last few minutes of the GoG portion of the conference because they started half an hour before they were scheduled to. :'(

But the good news is that they've signed, for certain, either Take 2, EA, LucasArts, Microsoft or Square Enix and will be releasing 25 games from whichever publisher it is at the beginning of the summer! And two more of those five publishers will hopefully be signed by fall! So excited! :D
It looks like it's all just Atari games for the moment. drat. still no Quest for Glory. But, apparently they've signed three new publishers, one of which will be available this summer, and the other two in the fall. Apparently some site updates are coming in a couple of days as well. Oh, and the first Witcher will be available may 10th.
Thanks, but there's already a post about this (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=9649.msg323046#msg323046). :)

I've merged the two topics together. I may actually take advantage of this offer. Since Sarien.net got shut down, I've been needing a way to play the first three king's quest and space quest games.

He's actually back up with proper permission.

I know, but he's only allowed the first game of every series. I was hoping for a little more than that.

And here I never knew about Sarien.net ... tried it out, but it was too buggy (at least on my system) for me to enjoy.  Oh well, it's a good thing that I don't depend on Sarien to play those games ;)

Stoked! :D
How could that NOT have been QfG?! Ugh, it all fit!! :(

I'm just pissed they still don't have QfG on there. I still have to play the games, but I want to wait until Gog adds the series; I'm sure they'll add them eventually.

Ahahahaha. (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/05/10/er-australia-gog-drops-geo-ip-check/)
Seriously, GoG has to have the biggest bearings on the face of the planet. If there's anything that can make up for that PR stunt they pulled, this is it.

Besides Rayman Forever (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/rayman_forever) and Rayman 2 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/rayman_2_the_great_escape/) being available now, the GoG website (http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage) now features a countdown to its big announcement: the acquisition of a contract with one of the five publishers (Lucasarts, EA, Square Enix, 2K, Microsoft) they have yet to partner with.
Here's a history (http://www.gog.com/en/news/dr_m_and_the_dastardly_doom) of what's been going on over the past several days if you, like me, haven't been watching the website (I just found out about all of this today).

Sadly, according to the countdown, I will be on the road when the big announcement is made. Hopefully I'll have access to a computer later that day.

Hmm, so they released Broken Sword II Remastered on GOG, and for those of us that already bought the original version from them, an upgrade for free!

How cool is that?

Yay! Interplay Promo Sale! I just picked up the Descent collection for $5.98! Yes! Now I have the games and the in-game cheats lists ('cause I royally suck at games, despite enjoying them so). Several games are at Promo prices, right now. Enjoy!

I grabbed the Descent and Freespace games myself along with Battle Chess Special Edition (which is just Battle Chess (floppy), Battle Chess II, and Battle Chess 4000.
