Title: Minecraft
Post by: wilco64256 on November 09, 2010, 12:38:15 PM
Just died for the first time and am now as hooked as I was the first time I died playing Demon's Souls.  This concept is simply incredible.

Discuss.

Minecraft, yays! :D

And we're getting an update tomorrow!

Love it! :D Though I don't really care for having heart attacks every 5 minutes so I play on peaceful. :P Currently working on making a little mini-city in single player, though I haven't been playing much lately due to being sucked back into WoW and the fact that Minecraft now likes to crash every half hour on my laptop. :-\

And I shall love to discuss it more. After the meeting I have in 10 minutes. :P

I'll work on getting some more people in probably tomorrow - today's just been for messing around a bit and figuring out how to kill a lava spring when I spawned the wrong item type and pulled a "Wonder what this does?" in the middle of an island...

Update - Crisis averted, though it did make the spawn area easy to see in the dark, but probably would have been somewhat annoying for newcomers to start off their visit in a lava spring.  If I can get the server to function properly while I'm at work tomorrow I'll let folks come in and start work on some islands.

Update 2.0 - Looks like it's not going to happen from work, our router here is quite a bit more complex and I can't seem to get the port forwarding working the way I want it to - if I figure it out later I'll update again but for now the world will only be online while I'm at home.

I've been busy with TSL stuff today so I didn't get the server up and going at home, but tomorrow I will and a couple of you have already asked for invites and will be welcomed in as construction begins.  So far I have a beach.

Just got it. Unfortunately I'm having some FPS issues (imagine, a computer that can plow through modern games but struggles with Minecraft). I think there's some sort of memory leak because whenever I attempt to run it, the performance degrades until my computer complains of low memory.

And here's an aerial shot of the foundation I've laid down for the Castle of the Crown.  Done for tonight, tomorrow I gotta do a bunch of Episode 3 work but I'll leave the server open for other people to come in and play (Doon did today!) and get to work on laying down wall lines, doors, the garden, etc. if I have time.

Looks like the server will actually be down for a while, we're heading up to the in-laws for a visit and I want to work on stuff up there but they don't have internet (I know, it blows my mind too).  I'll be back this afternoon sometime and will bring the server back online then.

Update - Drunkenmonkey came and mined like a mining fiend for a while today, and I did some terraforming to clear an area for the village.  My first attempt at two actual buildings below (bookshop and pawnshop if you can't tell, not a whole lot of variety in building materials):

Buildings from left to right: map peddler, lamp peddler, Four Winds, the restaurant whose name eludes me, and the clothes stand (I think).

The fountain looks so pretty at night! Nice work, Weldon!

Now to see if I can find some time today to go and take a look at all the grass you got planted in there.  Gotta get a few other things taken care of first, but the server will be up as soon as I get home.

I like that there's a cow hanging out in the clothing shop, which is also right next to the tavern - very convenient.

LOL. Oh, I also finished the tree farm. It contains about 64 saplings and will be quite dense once all the tree grow. It pretty much fills up the entire Netherlands. If you decide that you need the space for something else, the closeness of the trees would allow us to light everything on fire with just one use of the flint and steel. And there wouldn't be any risk of spreading fire because it's surrounded by sand.

Cools. :D How does one make that?
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: kindofdoon on November 18, 2010, 07:51:15 PM
One must displace all the water by placing solid blocks wherever one wants to have air. So I dropped a ton of stone blocks on the seabed, extending from the seabed up to the water level, hollowed out the stone chunk I made (leaving the outermost walls intact to prevent water from flooding in), and added a layer of glass around the outside of the stone layer. Then I removed the outermost stone layer and dug into the seabed and placed glass walls extending into the seabed, digging out a hole that was slightly larger than the glass dome, so as to have water surrounding the whole dome. Once that was finished, I flooded the area around the dome by digging up the seabed dirt surrounding the dome.

Longest post ever!

TL;DR: I made a stone chunk, placed glass around it, and then hollowed it out from the top down.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Fierce Deity on November 21, 2010, 03:15:48 PM
I gave up on WoW. Minecraft looks fun, but it looks like it requires a lot of farming for materials. And "farming" is what I hated about WoW. I have a strict policy that has limited me to games that don't require an entire lifetime to finish. I like to move on from one game to another. Playing one game endlessly is regarded as the textbook definition of "addiction". Still, if you are getting some enjoyment out of it, it's worth it, right?
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: kindofdoon on November 21, 2010, 03:24:58 PM
This may sound weird, but the farming is actually enjoyable. This is because (for me personally), other games confine you to a map and tell you what to do. Or maybe the game is non-linear and doesn't require you to do anything in order; still, even then, you are confined to a map. Minecraft is completely non-linear and completely non-map-confining. It is pure liberation to do whatever you want.

On the other hand, if getting any resources at all isn't your thing, you can cheat to give yourself resources and just build away.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: kindofdoon on November 21, 2010, 03:39:00 PM
But it takes a few hours of mining to get there. And it would take several lifetimes to mine every block; according to Weldon, each randomly generated map has 8 times the surface area of the Earth.

It should be my lifetime goal then. I'll just hope my reincarnations can remember my password.  :P

Still, with these worlds built the way they are, has anyone tried to recreate a world from another video game? Like Azeroth from Warcraft? I think it'd be cool if someone tried to create a Daventry. Especially with all of the details that King's Quest fans have retained, they can create a Land of the Clouds above Daventry and an underground cavern for the Land of Leprechauns.

Another reason I love Minecraft - no monthly subscription fees.  Buy it once up front and you're good to go.  And the farming is better in Minecraft because there's no leveling involved - it's not like it progressively takes longer and longer for each successive block.  It's surprisingly fun.

I'm actually thinking (and this is down the road a bit, like sometime next year) about taking a shot at recreating the Mask of Eternity zones somewhere.  Minecraft has the ideal setup for creating areas like the underworld area (forgive me, I don't remember the names right off the top of my head) and the mines where the gnomes live.

Was the building on fire on purpose? :P

I still need to learn how that redstone stuff works...

I built this great wood cabin with nice glass windows so I could watch the sun rise...I thought it would be a cool idea to have a lava fountain inside of it...In retrospect, that was a terrible idea. I left the remaining pieces burning so that I could recreate the cabin using those few intact pieces as guides if I ever want to.

As for Redstone, there are plenty of helpful tutorials on YouTube. I linked to two in the description of my video.

Is that gravel or just unprocessed cobblestone?  At first glance I thought it was gravel, but gravel wouldn't stay suspended in the air like you have it on the tower.

Yeah, it was sad, but at the same time, kind of cool. It's cool that the game engine is robust enough to allow fire to spread in a realistically unpredictable way - it's very real like that (although its visuals are primitive). It felt very lifelike, running out of a burning house and standing, watching it burn. It's impressive that the game can create experiences like that.

I started out trying to just make it, but have changed my mind and am going to sketch it out across a few pieces of paper first so I can visualize it better.  Once I get it in feel free to swing by and put like some switches at dead ends that open doors in other parts of the maze or whatever you like.  I had to replace some grass that was visible in part of it because like 5 sheep spawned in a tiny little room and brought my work to a halt temporarily.

Yeah that would be sweet! I've never really played around in multi player.

I've tried making a few things from kings quest before but it's tough.  Due to the magic of video games outside dimensions don't have to match inside dimensions, for example I tried making Mananan's house and it looked really great on the inside but the outside was a mess.  It didn't resemble his house at all.

Heh I haven't actually had a chance to try it yet - all I saw in the server log this morning before leaving for work was that Drunkenmonkey kept getting kicked out for having an out-of-date client.

There we go - looks like Notch actually released another update already this morning and it's taken care of the fully broken stuff.  Unfortunately he also had to remove leaf decay again which is a major bummer.

One other quick update - if you have a MP server (like I do) you also have to download the newest server update as well.  I did that a while ago and it's working fine (though I won't be home much today due to family events, sorry).

And yet another - no more jumping off the top of the castle - it's now lethal.  I turned the PVP stuff off unless we decide to have a paintball match or something but I don't think I can turn player health off.

I didn't actually do much in the way of digging today but I did discover that I accidentally turned monsters back on (that's off again now, scared the absolute crap out of me) and that you can now collect wool and kill animals for food.  Now I can make string the right way.

Oh and I finished the maze.  Take a right at the bottom of the stairs into the castle basement and you'll see a sign marked "Point A" by a ladder.  Head up the ladder and see if you can find your way out to a sign for "Point B."

I made it up a phonie set of ladders that led to a dead end, but no point B ladder in sight at the moment.  :(

Things are looking progressively more and more cool around here, yeah!

Once I make some respectable progress on some non-Minecraft stuff I need to take care of, I'm actually thinking of doing something really complex with using some minecart tracks and a variety of rooms to put together a fun little ride.

Update - I finally was able to be away from my computer long enough to go ahead and upload this video of the finished castle basement and myself getting lost in my own maze: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp5DbXkcz_Q

Next video will be of the path from the village past Beauty's house and out to the docks, plus maybe a quick tour of the lighthouse.

With our new baby and me switching jobs and whatnot I've been quite busy and haven't had the Green Isles server up much - and I've been working like a madman on Episode 3 stuff to make sure we do get it released ASAP.  Things have stabilized enough now that I can leave the server up much more consistently now, so whoever wants to is more than welcome to continue coming by and building whatever they like.

I don't know, it's no fun when it's just me in there. :'(  Though I haven't logged in recently, I'm currently beta testing on another site, :o but not a lot will have changed by the sound of things.  :-\ That map on the calendar brings up some interesting possibilities for expansion. We should have minecraft night or something so people will show. Half the fun is chatting to people about what each other are building.

I can keep the server up whenever works for people as long as it isn't the middle of the day on Friday when I need it at work.  As many people as want to are welcome to come by, I'd love to start in on some rebuilding work with colored blocks - it remains to be seen whether I'll have any free time at all between now and Episode 3's release but I'll certainly try.

I've watched some Minecraft videos on YouTube of people actually building computers that actually work....it's spectacular. With makeshift LCD displays and everything. It's truly a thing to behold. Minecraft is a very very VERY creative outlet in more than a few ways.

If Notch makes blocks that change color depending on current, one could actually create a working display. Hook that up to a virtual computer made in-game, and you've got a functioning computer.

Funny how the spawn location has an influence on what we decide to start building - my original spawn was in the ocean right in front of a crescent moon-shaped sand inlet that went uphill and inland and immediately split with level areas to the right and left for a bit.  Naturally I went al out on building the Isle of the Crown.  This week is spring break so I'm off regular work for a few days and may get back to rebuilding the castle using colored blocks.

I found a good way to make a minecart station, so I builded one

Still upgrading it as the cart can go further than I had tracks.

Time for me to make more pics of the game to post here.

don't let any grass grow inside your farm eighter.
You can do it whit a fence, but then skeletons can shoot an arrow at you.
So the glass one is the best.

Currently am I building a castle in my game to see how bigg I need to make it.
Seems the scale I make it is a bit too small at the moment, but it will grow soon.

the start of my own castle.
the outer wall is on the front side ready and I still need to work on the other sides, but the keep inside the castle will be build first.

the castle will be made out of a 2 blocks thick cubblestone wall surounding the inner complex and the buildings inside will be 1 block thick.
I think this weekend I could have the keep higher than the wall, but it will take some time.
(I don't use any cheats and monsters do spawn)

edit:

latest upgrade to my castle.
I have had 2 creepers jump from the top of the keep and they were  still alive, but the were killed whitout any damage to the building.

3 levels has the keep at the moment which are 6 blocks high each. and a floor of 1 block
I still need to think if I should put 1 more level on the building or just start building towers on the side of the keep.
And this is only the main area of the keep, so I still need to make some extra rooms next to this part. Xd

I have made one whitout those coalpowered minecarts.

I tested my minecart to how high it will go, but I haven't managed to get it to slow down.
Seems to me a fine way to travel fast across the world by an underground route.4

Pictures from above to down:
- highest point of the mountain in the area
- sight to the exit of the minecart station. (at least the part that is underground)
- sight from the exit

all by all it is a good way to travel fast across the world.

Still need to make some improvements on it all as it will only go one way.
More tracks and switches for the wicked. :suffer:

to make it more visable how high a cart can go:

You should ask Notch for that, it would be fun indeed.
For now I can make a booster that will give a car inf. power so it won 't be slowing down untill it hits a trackless spot.

you need to have a double cart on the booster-track to get it, but it also has some problems you need to solve.

On the last photo I showed you I got to the top, made the round and went down to be boosted again.
Now I'm removing that track and the stone so I can make a switch so you can take 2 paths.

The building in the distance is my inn. It's got the main bar area, a kitchen, two private dining rooms, 4 nice rooms on the second floor, and 5 smaller rooms in the roof. :D

made a switch that gives you 2 directions for a minecart track and after that I created a track to my starting base.
So now I can transport all the goods there much faster.

I also have a mob killing machine to produce gunpowder (for when needed) and arrows.
Those bones are also handy for growing trees.
I keep increasing it's size so more creatures spawn to be captured in it.

While extending the size of my new spawn hut (now a very large two-story spawn house) I discovered these guys trying to sneak in and blow up my everythings.

(http://brandonblume.com/games/creepers.jpg) (http://brandonblume.com/games/creepers.jpg)

At first they'd all hop up and down over and over. Then they would stop and just stare at me. That was creepy. Eventually I tried attacking them through the door and I accidentally opened the door and all 4 of them blew up the entrance to my house killing me in the process with iron armour.

The spawn point is said to change to the last bed you slept in. Until you break the bed in which case the original spawn point is restored. The compass will always point to the same position no matter what, though.

Much work done on the place. Much expanded! I built a connected greenhouse to farm cacti, sugar cane, and wheat. I'll eventually expand the whole area into a nice beach front...though it would look better on an actual beach than a lake. That was my spawn point so I just built around it. It started as a simple hut and then I just kept expanding it. I plan on putting a deck on the outside with stairs which connects to the second floor.

Time for a little update on my game.
Took some time to work on my castle and builded 2 towers on it.
The towers are not high, but I will make them higher in the future as they need a point on top of them.
I still need to know what kind of picture I should place on the ceiling as it is 18 squares (max 24 square)

Still need to extend the back of the keep though as only the front part has been extended (on one side)
Even took the time to mine for more cubblestone and made a new spawnkiller that doesn't work as well as the one I already had made.

A wip lighthouse I'm making for my outpost a little ways away from my home base. This is taking an unbelievable amount of stone. I'm going to replace some of the cobble blocks near the bottom with moss cobble to give it a really weathered look. I'll probably use lava for the actual lighthouse light and surround it in glass.

What? Lava gives off quite a bit of light! I could use Lightstone if I ever find enough diamond to craft armour, weapons, and tools so I can mine enough obsidian to go to the Nether and retrieve it. I've seen lava-lighthouses in action, though, and they're not that bad.

In other news, check this out. We just got the update to Beta 1.4 last week and already we're getting the Beta 1.5 update as early as next week! Here's a video Mojang uploaded of all the crap load of new features they're putting in like weather and achievements.

I spent hours and hours trying to figure out how to make an XOR logic gate with redstone for a door to be controller by two switches. One switch was to be next to the door and the other quite a ways away hidden at the bottom of the hill it was on. Finally figured it all out. Restone is TOUGH. But satisfying once you succeed. Lots of underground wiring and repeater use was required.

Just got into it myself.  I haven't made anything to special yet.   Although I am making an island tower and it occurred to me that it reminded me the wizard's tower from MOE.

Now I'm considering how much effort it would take to make Daventry, with everything being blocky as all get out it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to replicate an AGI feel to it.
