Title: Gathering some Magic
Post by: Arix on November 19, 2010, 05:32:04 AM
I'm hoping I'm not the only player around here, so that at least one other person will appreciate these:

I don't play myself, but I'm somewhat familiar with the game. Nice work! (and I see you're new, so welcome to the forums!)

Did you make these? They're very good! I didn't play Magic, but I always liked its art style.

I did indeed make them (though not the art - artist credits are at the bottom, where they should be). I'm actually rather a dab hand at Magic design - for example, the company that makes the game are currently holding "The Great Designer Search", in which they search for applicants to offer a 6 month paid internship that will likely lead into a full-time design job. One part of it involved a multiple choice questionnaire to test the applicant's design skills. You needed at least 44 out of 50 to pass - I scored 47.

I've been designing cards for a long, long time. I have hundreds upons hundreds of individual designs - I just chose these ones in particular because, hey, it's relavant to the forum.

SWEET!  I never played Magic, but Dad and my brother did.  Sooooo cool!  Nice work!

Hooray, popularity.

Here's a challenge. A lot of my designs are flavour-driven (that is, I come up with the concept - such as Daventry's three legendary treasures here - then design the card around it). So how's about you throw me a concept and I'll see what I can do with it? Sierra-related or otherwise, I'm just interested in what I can do.

My one request is no joke concepts, please. Make it something that could be seen in the Magic world (traditional, high fantasy style).

That's awesome, man. Good luck!

Oh, I didn't actually enter. I wasn't eligible - only US residents could enter.

Oh, that sucks. You could have written in saying, "Willing to relocate!" :)

I would've too. Problem is it's more to do with the fact that becoming eligible to work in the US would've taken longer than the contest and internship itself.

Heh, with all the red tape you'd have to cut your way through, you're probably right. :P

Man, I used to play back in high school.  I'm really out of touch with the rules now, but I'd be interested in getting back into the game.

As for concept ideas, I'd be interested in seeing Cupid's Bow, Knightmare, the Mirror of Truth, Hole in the Wall, and maybe legendary character cards.

How about Tamir's Magical Fruit? It could be a healing card or something (assuming there is such a thing; I've never played Magic).

Isn't it Nightmare?

I believe it is Night Mare, though I could be mistaken.... Baggins, a ruling?

I think there could be all kinds of cards you could make out of King's Quest...
Royal Family of Daventry
King Graham
Queen Valanice
Rosella of Daventry
Alexander of Daventry
(and a separate card for Gwydion of course :P)

And you could do villains and other characters and the list just goes on and on!

Well, I currently have the perfect idea for Saladin, Nightmare, and Gwydion. I'll get to work on the rest.

Okay, so here are those three:

Saladin was somewhat difficult, since there's really not a whole lot known about him. In the end, I decided to just go with what little we did know. And if there's one trait that Saladin really is known for, it's his unwavering loyalty. The colours were a problem though - the ability was very much green/red, but Saladin himself is a purely white character. In the end, I decided to just add in some white combat-based abilities to balance the colours out.

Then we have Gwydion. This one was pretty easy, actually. Stealing an opponent's spells to cast against them? Seems fitting.
Finally, we have Night Mare. Which was again, pretty simple. Ferrying souls to - and occasionally, from - the realm of the dead. I'm not a big fan of the regeneration, which kinda makes it too wordy and is anti-synergistic with the last ability, but I can't ignore the flavour.

Very nice! The Nightmare card is totally plausible. What software did you use to make this?

Magic Set Editor. I'm sure if you do a quick search you'll be able to find it.

Okay, just cooked up a few more.

Cupid's Bow wasn't a difficult one at all. Hell, I'm pretty sure even someone who knows absolutely nothing about Magic can appreciate this:
Tamir's Fruit of Life. A life-gain effect was obviously needed for this one. An eternal, ever-increasing supply of it seemed about right.
Shard of the Mask is perhaps one of my favourites yet. Like Cupid's Bow, even if you know absolutely nothing about Magic, you can appreciate this one.

Two more before I retire for the night.

Non-KQ based this one, but I'm sure you'll recognise it all the same...

Finally...it's-a me!

This one's a little tongue-in-cheek, and also requires a little explanation...
As you can probably guess, regenerating a creature protects it from destruction. However, only a living creature can regenerate - regeneration prevents destruction, it doesn't undo it. Keep that in mind...

LOL! How appropriate, especially for KQV. ^_^
