Title: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: Arkillian on November 29, 2010, 04:43:41 AM
OK, so Alexander has a huge fangirl group (that I'm part of) and Rosella has her fanboys (I'm sure of it) but what about non royalty? Is there any fandoms for them?

Me, I've always been TOTALLY charmed by the Hole in the wall. It's adorable, and sweet, and it's SO useful.

I'm hooked. Who's with me on this one? :D

I would hope you'd like a bit more substance to a man.
Hole in the Wall is a little empty, is he not?

Oh, come now. I like my men tall dark and handsome ((Like Alexander! ;) )) Hole in the wall is... more like a pet <3 A pet with a cute squeaky little voice that plays charades for communication. I thought it was the best little non companion in King's Quest 6, and I am *so* happy it came back for TSL ^^ I'm really charmed by Graham's little conversation with it. IT's so adorable ^^

If there was ever a plushy for Hole in the Wall, I would buy it.  Throw in Cedric and the Dangling Participle, and I'll be happy, though I'll probably emit annoying squeeing sounds.

Actually, would we be able to market TSL merchandise?
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: KatieHal on November 29, 2010, 03:37:00 PM
Unfortunately, no. It falls under the category of not being allowed legally to make money off of the KQ IP.

OMG YES. I'd TOTALLY tap it! You know, had KQ6 been made 10 years later, they could've made SO much money on merchandise! See Kingdom hearts- King's Quest has as much in it as Kingdom Hearts does. Specially with the plots of TSL! There's tones of room for fans to go crazy!

Mind you, without the fandom deciding the OTPs, I wonder how the fanart would be...  I might see if I can adopt my lack of sewing skills to make one of these...

Hardy har har! ;D

Rock on Hole in the Wall! I always liked him too, I was worried in KQ 6 when he vanishes from the Catacombs and the Narrator mentions that "Alexander hopes that the little creature finds his way back home to the Isle of Wonder." It was a good move for the TSL team to include him. :)

That's ironic that Alexander kidnaps a hole in the wall and it fights to find it's way home D: Poor hole in the wall.

Lol, what a funny thread. I like the HitW's sound effects from KQVI (the sound he makes when he crawls away in the catacombs is what I'm thinking of), I like the fact that TSL brought him back, as Haids said, and I like Cez' voicing of him. Overall, he's a very like-able character. Though, I suppose, there is no indication of its gender; it could just as well be a female.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: Haids1987 on November 29, 2010, 07:53:26 PM
Nah, it's a boy.  Cesar voiced him--Cesar's not a girl! ;P
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: kindofdoon on November 29, 2010, 08:02:42 PM
Well, sometimes voice actors voice the opposite gender (Ash Ketchum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Ketchum) and Timmy Turner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timmy_Turner#Timmy_Turner), for example). Plus, TSL is technically not a part of the KQ canon, so if you wanted to answer the question "what is the gender of the Hitw?", you should only consider KQVI.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: Arkillian on November 29, 2010, 08:12:28 PM
I'd rather not give it a gender. Giving it a gender makes me think of thing like how it reproduces. I'd rather call it and it and not wonder about that kind of thing >.<
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: kindofdoon on November 29, 2010, 08:15:06 PM
True, it could also be gender-neutral. Based on the KQ canon, I think that's the most reasonable conclusion.

The KQ Omnipedia refers to the HitW as male, but I don't think there is any basis for that.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: KatieHal on November 29, 2010, 08:27:15 PM
I think it gets referred as "little guy" and such, but that can also be a generic way of referring to it.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub

Right, it seems that in English, the default gender where gender is unknown is more often male than female.

It used to be, but in recent years, I've seen 'he' and 'she' used interchangeably for unknown gender, mostly in RPG books.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: kindofdoon on November 29, 2010, 09:18:41 PM
Really? I can't think of one scenario where the default unknown gender is female.
Title: Re: Hole on the wall fanclub
Post by: Arkillian on November 30, 2010, 03:14:37 AM
I think it depends. Some people default to male, some to female. Also, certain endearments get associated with the genders. Little guy is a generic term, but if the object being named was appealing, a guy will likely term it in female terms calling it a she and beautiful. Manly object get called he.

I prefer to call it an it till it's canon that they HAVE genders. I'm not a fan of genderising an object unless it's for fun. I refer to my car as a male cause it's a Toyota Allex, and well... yeah XD

The documentation writers for the software I test randomly assign male or female gender when referring to users.

I'll be honest - I tend to assume that bad drivers are female and that people texting in movie theaters are male.  Don't know why.  But I've always thought of HitW as male too.

Arg, that annoys me greatly, though I've seen a pretty even distribution between males and females using cell phones during concerts/plays/movies/etc.

When we talk about our customers at work, we refer to them as "She" or "Her". Always capitalized too. Frankly, it's a little creepy.

I prefer to think of Hole-in-the-Wall as a nice, lower-case "it". :P

NZers obviously have a different mindset then. Over here, females are more likely slow drivers, and most bad drivers are asian (cause they dont' get the practice in their country? ^^; I donno. It's just common)

Not quite so NZ-specific. Over here in the US, we have many bad driver assumptions--old and/or female and/or Asian are among them!

It would seem to me that if the hole in the wall were female, she'd have a little bow or something on her head to designate her gender.  Maybe it's just me, but bow on the head seems to be the universal "even though I seem gender neutral, this pink bow clearly states otherwise buster."  No pink bow = not a girl.  I vote that hole in the wall is totally a dude!

Thats fair, a bow of any color would probably work.  My point still stands though, how would one honestly tell between a male and female hole in the wall?  Answer: bow in the hair.  BA BAM!

So, I can't say ive play every single King quest, ( remakes and non remakes ) but i have played a few. But i am curious what other King quests does Hole-in-the-wall show in? I am guessing King quest 7?
I used to play that one as a kid, and for the longest time i could never remember the name of the game, untill i stumbled upon a King quest remake.

I fell in low with the little guy in this fan remake, Hes a silly little creature, i really hope we see him again.

Encyclopedia dramatica says otherwise (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Facepalm), but I'd rather drop the whole thing. If it wasn't meant to offend then it's cool. I wish that intentions were clarified cause I didn't know who Blackthorne was till that post so I didnt' know their humour but it's cool. It's too easy to misunderstand someone on the internet. I'm surprised that there's 3 pages of posts on HITW too- in a good way! I'm happy that there is love for it ^^ I like Cedric too, but I think HITW is my favorite when it comes to support cast :)
