Title: Batman:The Dark Knight Rises : vilains revealed
Post by: Ravager on January 20, 2011, 04:42:51 PM
They've announce the next villain for Batman:The Dark Knight Rises. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman! Tom Hardy will also play Bane.

http://www.batmanytb.com/news.php

I'm not too thrilled about Bane, but the inclusion of Catwoman will (hopefully) erase that horrid Catwoman movie from people's mind.

Nah, it's not all I've seen her in.  I just have this image of her burned into my mind from that and other movies like The Devil Wears Prada, and I can't help but shudder.

I do too, she's awesome!  But she's so freaking cute.  It'll be interesting to see how she pulls off Catwoman.

Anne Hathaway can do pretty much anything. Has she ever had a flop?

Bride Wars. Didn't see it, but I understand it's pretty awful.

But that's the only one I think!

We have to assume that Christopher Nolan knows what he's doing. So far, he has only produced critically-acclaimed films.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the Batman movies. I fell asleep during Batman Begins. I'll admit The Dark Knight wasn't bad (ok, it was really good, especially the joker) but I can also do without it. I'll probably see this movie as well, in addition to the upcoming Superman reboot. I want to see what Chris Nolan is gonna do with the man of steel... Am I the ONLY one who actually somewhat enjoyed the Catwoman movie? The game admittedly sucked, but almost all games based on movies do. No surprise there. But I actually somewhat enjoyed Halle Barry as Catwoman. But I'm probably in a minority here... A very small minority...

Awwwww, a 90's baby! ;D

I personally love the Batman movies, but I grew up on them.  The originals were late 80's/early 90's classics, and my big brother was already a huge fan by the time I was born.  Perhaps it's one of those things like King's Quest--you had to grow up on them to fully appreciate them. :)

Well, being a 90's child, I grew up on Batman: The Animated Series (which is a masterpiece of american animation in my opinion). Nothing to me will ever replace that as the best batman series at all. No movie, in my opinion, can out do the animated series. Except for maybe Batman Beyond. I LOVED that show. I own the complete series on DVD, and I love it.

The animated series was inspired by the Tim Burton 1989 Batman. It even uses the same theme song.

Well, I was rather young when it came out, still being in either elementary school or middle school. I can't remember which. Back then, I thought any movie was good XD

Same here! Funny thing, I was never a fan of the series to begin with, I was converted many years later. For me, Batman: TAS became THE reference for Batman.

So DD, what's your favorite Batman movie then? Is it Mask of the Phantasm, SubZero, Return of the Joker... or Mysteries of the Batwoman?

Mask of the Phantasm is probably number one right now, with Return of the Joker as a very close second. I haven't seen the whole movie of Subzero or Mysteries of the Batwoman, but I will some day soon. In fact, one or two of those movies were available on Netflix instant streaming at one point in time. Oh, and I love your avatar! I loved Mask of the Phantasm!

Yeah, MoTP is awesome! RoTJ  was also great, but IMHO, it felt more like Terry McGinnis movie.

Out of curiosity, what is your favorite pairing, if I may ask?

I liked Return of the Joker because of the terry mcginnis stuff. I like Batman Beyond for several reasons. One, it takes place in the future (I've always been a sucker for science-fiction/fantasy), there's a new younger batman (who's still in high school) and he's got the old batman as his mentor and, in a way, surrogate father.

I was very resistant to the very idea of BB, but I mellow a bit over time. Especially, after seeing the movie and the JLU "Epilogue" episode. All in all, it was enjoyable and it's part of DCAU. I haven't bought the DVD... yet

I know next to nothing about Batman and in general have never been overly fond of comic books.  Actually, I've never been fond of them at all.  That said, I have enjoyed the recent Batman films.  When it comes to the villain though, I was really hoping for the Riddler.  I think it would have been interesting to see him re-imagined.  I mean, from what I've seen (and again I'm hardly an expert.  Everything I know about Batman and the villains came from reading wikipedia after I played Arkham Asylum) the Joker was pretty campy and out there, but they managed to bring the character to a much darker place in Dark Knight.  Likewise I would love to see the Riddler in all his malignant narcissistic glory instead of the campiness of the tv series and the crime against man and god that is Jim Carry and his shtick.  Plus with the Riddler you have the added bonus that you want to see him fail.  No one gets under your skin like a narcissist and you'd just be dying to see him fail.  Bane and Catwoman, though?  Catwoman has the romantic angle with Batman, so how bad are they actually going to make her?  And Bane, well isn't he a sympathetic character?  It seems I remember reading something about his origins being that he was incarcerated young and he had his teddy bear and was actually pretty well read and intelligent before being shot up with whatever chemical it was that turned him into Bane.  Oh, and he broke people's backs, I think.  So there is that.

I'm excited to see how the movie goes and how they close the story out, but still I would have liked to see what the franchise would have done with the Riddler.

Take That from Halle Berry at the Razzies: "First of all, I want to thank Warner Brothers. Thank you for putting me in a piece of s***, god-awful movie (...) It was just what my career needed."

The Riddler would have been great, but I think WB would have said a big no. He's is more of a intellectual adversary and the movie would have revolve around mind games. Catwoman and Bane are more action-oriented characters and fit better the blockbuster WB wants for the summer.
Title: Re: Batman:The Dark Knight Rises : vilains revealed
Post by: Damar on January 22, 2011, 02:32:12 PM
True.  That's a shame though, because I think the Riddler fits with the general concepts the film has been going for.  In Batman Begins you have this villain that basically sees himself as the guardian of mankind, that couches his villainy in high ideals.  And ultimately, though Batman takes him down, he's strongly inspired by him, trained by him, and actually takes his ideals and puts them into practice, though not to the extreme that was originally planned.  In Dark Knight we have a villain who has no ideals, no lust for power, nothing whatsoever.  He doesn't couch his villainy in anything.  He just is.  Both villains are interesting and go from a pure justification for atrocities to a complete absence of justification at all, even in the most basic sense.  The Riddler would have been the perfect mixture, and means of bridging, those two concepts.  He's just as much as a sociopath as the Joker, but also justifies his villainy.  And the justification is, "Because I'm better than you.  And you need to know it."  It would have been fascinating to see, I think.

You can always PM me the pair. Trust me, I won't flame you. I'm into some not so popular ships myself (or at least, not popular among my friends). Believe me, I'd respect the ship you choose. And I do like Gundam. I'm way behind on the series though (the only series I've really seen is Gundam Wing. I've been meaning to catch up with the rest eventually).

So I guess I'm one in a billion that didn't absolutely hate the catwoman movie. I mean, it certainly wasn't the best movie ever, but I got some enjoyment out of it.

OK I sent you a PM of my favorite pairing. One thing I learned is that if people don't like your shippings, they shouldn't flame/troll on forums, attack personal web pages and so forth. In the end, it will never change the OTPs that you cherish. No one can ever take them away from you.

This is off-topic, but there's actually a new Gundam Wing novel, set 20 years after the end of the series and movie. It's far too early to tell, but people have mixed feelings about this.

I have some friends who have gotten me into Gundam.  I've just started watching Gundam Wing actually.  It's pretty enjoyable, and I've never really liked anime all that much.  As of now I've seen some of the original Gundam, Zeta, Double Zeta, Char's Counterattack, and F-91.  It's interesting, if uneven in terms of writing and quality.  Zeta was great and Double Zeta got pretty good once they make the turn from kiddie fun into darkness.  Char's Counterattack and F-91, though...wow.  I could not figure out what was going on.  It just seemed so convoluted.  It can be perfectly summarized by this exchange between me and my t.v. while watching Char's Counterattack:

(massive battle and an explosion)
Quess: Did they just kill Gyunei?
Me: I DON'T KNOW!  YOU TELL ME!

Still, interesting to watch.  And Yazan is the man.  I would have loved to see more of him.

Anyway, sorry, off topic.  Back to Batman, I guess.

yeah, I'm really looking forward to having Catwoman in, and Anne Hathaway is a very interesting choice to play it. I wonder if she'll pull it off.

BUT, I'm also bummed there's no Riddler. Nolan would have created an amazing Riddler, and Ridller and Catwoman in the same movie would have been too much!

I have to say..... this is why I wish there was more than a trilogy of this Batman reboot. The re-imaginings of each villain they've used so far have been so great I want to see all of the baddies re-envisioned.

I can even give you a list of each of the villains I'm hoping for. (And, yes, the Riddler is on there. Fortunately, so are Bane and Catwoman.)
