I've gotta say after waiting nigh 14 years I'm psyched for this!
The press release on Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/21/exclusive-duke-nukem-forever-has-a-release-date.aspx)
The Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-b78TKZIyw)
I saw that earlier this morning and am both shocked and impressed that it finally appears to be coming for real.
Heh. "We're *u**ing bringing it" - well, looks better than you'd expect for a game in nearly a decade and a half of dev hell. Hope it plays better than it looks though.
That was quite an overblown trailer, but nonetheless I'm excited for it. I probably won't buy it, but I'm very happy to see it finally coming out.
I wonder how many copies they would have to sell to break even after 14 years of development? (lol)
I love how you've been loyally waiting for this for years, MI. You're the only one I know who's genuinely excited. The rest of my friends are like "meh, sounds neat." and one even compared it to "being satisfied after a good belch."
I hope it lives up to some of it's hype for you!
Bt
I'm going to have the fun right outta this game! They just better have MOD tools. God help them if they don't have MOD tools!
The only thing I DESPISE is the cover art. The guy doesn't look like Duke at all. Just some young college frat-boy d***** Duke wannabe.

Wow. I love how the delayed release is just becoming public now... In the GameStop system it went from February to May around two months ago XD Still, pretty exciting that it's actually coming out now. I've never played any of the previous Duke Nukem games, but maybe I will someday. I just hope the game is worth it's 14 year cycle. I mean, Too Human, which spent somewhere around ten years in development, ended up sucking royally. At least, according to reviews. I never actually played it...
The original Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II are great little platformer/shooters, and DN2 in particular still holds up well today. Duke Nukem 3D will always be a classic of the FPS genre, though in my opinion it hasn't held up all that well (I still enjoy it, but probably more for nostalgia's sake than anything.) It has aged better than Quake though, in my opinion. The other games that came out after DN3D are mostly crap. None ever lived up to that game's greatness, and none were true FPS games either. Duke Nukem Forever looks decent, and seems like it captures the feel and humor of DN3D, but for some reason I just can't shake the feeling that this game is just Gearbox attempting to cash in on the DNF name and development fiasco, and that the current game bears little in common with the game that 3D Realms initially set out to develop. Yeah yeah, I know they've said it stays true to 3D Realms vision, but really...this game couldn't POSSIBLY be THAT close to a 12 year old concept--and if it was, would that concept still be any GOOD in today's gaming world?
The thing is, it's the same people who were working on it at 3DR that got laid off. After the lawsuit thing they kept working on the game in their homes and created Triptych Games. Gearbox came along and funded the game. Gearbox isn't doing anything to the game AT ALL other than helping them polish it up. It's all Triptych (aka ex-3DR guys, including the creator of Duke Nukem Allen Blum).

Lol...okay okay. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I would have done so anyway. Duke3D was one of my absolute favorites back in the day. :)
Also, I'm sure that it isn't going to be the exact same game that would have come about 12 years ago. For one thing, Dr Proton was mentioned as returning back in 1998 (he was the nemesis in DN1) and he isn't anymore. Also Bombshell (a female ally character that was supposed to even be playable at one point in the game) also is missing. I think they reworked things a little bit by 2007 (which was when the Christmas teaser was released and seems representable of the current direction).
I'm just amazed they haven't yet announced a collector's edition that pokes fun at the whole development thing. Like, they should have a collector's edition that includes something from the pre-google era (considering the game started development before Google even existed). It would be great marketing in my eyes. But then again, I wouldn't know much about marketing lol
I don't get it....what do you mean?

Touche. Speaking of that, why
don't we have something like that?
I think we need to have outtakes. Like this, for example. Edgar kept going back to sleep while Graham was talking to him. :P

DUDE, THE TRAILER IS AWESOME. "well, I'd still hit it". FANTASTIC. This will be a smash hit, give the younger generation a dose of what we had with duke 3d. a DEFINITE buy. Plus crysis 2 AND fear 3? A good 6 months for FPS. Come on, doom 4.... we are waiting.....
Absolutely. I just wish the cover art they have slated for the game weren't so misrepresentative of who Duke is. Seriously, it's awful. And doesn't really make sense pose-wise.

I haven't played the early Duke games, but from what I learned from DNF material, Duke is virility personified. That would explain the overtly phallic position of his gun (and the camera angle).
I think he means the faux camera angle. With Duke's position relative to the background it makes it look like he's floating in mid-air at about a 45 degree angle to the ground when they took the "picture". That was the first thing I noticed, too.
And then the position of the woman's hand and arm coupled with that makes it look like he's sitting on her head and leaning way back for the shot.
I see what you mean. I guess we just have to accept that the foreground and background taken from different angle. Or perhaps the buildings were built by extremely poor architects and are extremely crooked.

I think you linked the wrong picture; that's a bad Photoshop that makes him look like a gangsta. :P
But yeah, the real official box doesn't look as good as previous ones.
No, it was intentional :). It was a fan's interpretation of what the cover portrays. It's the first thing I see every time I look at it.
Oh. Well, imo I certainly don't think the cover is as bad as that Photoshop suggests, but it's not as good as the others either.
The point is that it gives off entirely the wrong vibe. Duke's not a thug or a gangster (which his pose and persona reflects), he's an intimidating bad***.

Well, crap.
Something is strange, though. North American release June 14th and international release June 10th? Why does international get it earlier?
Yeah, I just read the delay announcement this morning. Oh well. At least it's still supposedly coming...

Indeed. it's always good when a company uses humor to it's advantage. I'm really really tempted to get duke nukem, but I'm going to wait a bit. Who wants to bet Gearbox is gonna do more Duke Nukem after this game? I can't imagine them stopping here, at least if this game is decently successful.
Absolutely they'll do more Duke Nukem. They wouldn't have purchased the license from 3D Realms if they had no long-term goals for it. That said, they've said they're not even thinking about another game until DNF is on the shelves. They're not even thinking about add-ons or DLC or anything right now. The focus is just to get DNF as good as possible and out on store shelves.

Honestly, that's the best way for them to go. After 14 years of development, they may as well put all their man-power into finishing this highly anticipated game and worry about DLC and future games later. Though, if I were them, I would do DLC first over a new game. Maybe that's just me though. I admit I've never played any of the previous games, and the only thing I associated with Duke Nukem was this game. A game, which for the majority of my life, had been one big pipe dream. Now, to see it actually happening? I'm really tempted to buy it. It's been what? 12-14 years since development began?
over 13 years at least.

I had heard 14, but yeah, it's been a while. According to what I hear, it's been in development since before google even existed... I almost want to go and fact-check that, but it's 2 AM in my timezone and i should be sleeping...
Lol, now one of the mods need to retitle this thread to June instead of May.
The very beginning was the announcement of a sequel at the end of the "The Birth" episode from the Atomic Edition of Duke Nukem 3D. So we've been waiting for over 14 years, but whether development started at the same time, I don't know. It's certainly been in development since 1998 at least.

Today is May 3rd. The day of the original release date of DNF before it was postponed to June 14th (June 10th international). But it is indeed coming on the 14th. Randy Pitchford, president and CEO of Gearbox Software has confirmed that the game is complete (all bugs squashed) and going through the certification process. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/technologynews/view/1126444/1/.html. The article was confirmed by a Gearbox employee on their forums. The system requirements have also finally been released and they are as follows:
Minimum Specifications

I expect the demo to be released to First Access Club members any time now. Also, here's a new and uncensored "Come Get Some" trailer released a few days ago (
NSFW).

The long wait is almost over.
I like the background music. Also, nudity on YouTube? I thought they were strictly against it.
Yeah, I was surprised by that as well. Maybe they don't care because it's CGI?
Or perhaps no one reported it yet.
There's an age gate which seems to appease YouTube. And it actually constantly gets reported and taken down and reuploaded lol.

DNF is now available for preorder on Steam. 10% off.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/57900/
So this is actually happening? I'm just surprised that the game that was the epitome of a "20XX" release date is finally coming out. At least those who have been waiting so long to play it will get the chance at last. ;D
I've already preordered my copy from Amazon. My brother preordered the Balls of Steel Edition which comes with a cool history artbook involving all the early DNF builds and the progress up to the present. I can't wait to see it.
I'm torn - I kind of want it, mostly for the sake of buying the game with the longest development time ever, but then I see some promotional video that reminds me how disgustingly virile it is.
I'm with you, doon. I want it just because it's been so long coming (and I would really love the BoS edition for the artbook), but seeing the trailer makes me wonder if I'd really enjoy it. :P
It's raunchy and it rides the borderline as if it isn't there, but the thing is besides all that the gameplay promises to be classic and entertaining. Interactivity at its best. Like no other game has done before. I'm not into Duke for his over the top attitude, I'm in it for the gameplay.
Really? I hadn't read any articles about it.
Of course, there's also the small problem that my computer won't be able to play it either... :P
Hasn't DN always been a standard shooter? I can think of lots of games that offer a greater degree of interactivity than what I've seen in promotional material for DNF.
That's what I thought, too.....maybe there's more to them than that? I have the ones that GoG released but I haven't gotten to play them yet.
There aren't a lot of videos or images about the interactivity of DNF but enough articles. Of course, words only go so far, but what I've heard is interesting enough.
Can you elaborate?
Draw on a white board freehand, sign your autograph in a kid's book (again freehand), play an actual fully working game of pinball in the arcade, drive around a remote control car. Things like that that would be mere eye candy in any other FPS but are actually interactive in DNF.
The first and last one have been done. Playing pinball sounds cool, but what's the point? Interactivity is great, as long as it's given a purpose in the game. Otherwise I could just play pinball on Windows XP.
But I realize that those are just a few examples and not the whole gamut. Not trying to pick a fight.
I guess we'll find out if it's your schtick or not once the demo comes out.
Either way, without the interactivity the game is said to be a good 12+ hours long for experienced players. Which is more than we can say for any other FPS released for the last decade. The game is loaded with puzzles a la Half-Life not just running and gunning. It's a puzzle shooter. A thinking FPS. It's not all about the puzzles, there are some areas where you just pummel enemies with bullets for a while. But the thing is there's a lot of game here. A lot of smart and fun gaming that isn't around anymore.

Now, see, that's what you should have said the first time. ;) That, I like the sound of.
Yeah, Randy has been saying over and over that DNF has pacing and sequences to break the monotony of one style of gaming. There'll be enough interesting things going on to keep your interest for those 12 hours or so. At least there better be :). But after 12 years of development I'm sure 3DR came up with enough content, which is just what Randy has also been saying. There's a lot of content. It just wasn't connected in any sort of coherent way by the time Gearbox got their hands on it.
Also, I posted the system requirements on the last page.

Demo was fun. Lots of people have issues with the graphics looking dated, the 2-weapon limit, and the regenerating health bar but we all knew this going in (or we should have, as it was stated hundreds of times before). I can't wait to play the full game.
The graphics looked dated? They look pretty sweet in all the video I've seen. Besides, people who complain about graphics are superficial (and have never played Minecraft).

People are whining about Skyrim's graphics too. I'd just ignore them.
People are morons.
No. Just reiterating.
People just love to complain.
In fact, I think want to make a video game where the object is to be the best complainer.
Bt
You can now pre-load DNF on your computer if you've pre-ordered it through Steam.
Quote from: MusicallyInspired on May 12, 2011, 07:57:08 AMI guess we'll find out if it's your schtick or not once the demo comes out.
Speaking of which: is the demo ever going to be made available to anyone other than FAC members and preorderers? I was planning on trying it out if it is.....
Spotted in Los Angeles today:

I'm sure it will be. You don't just have a demo without advertising it publicly. I'm pretty sure the FAC thing is just bonus early access before the release date.
That what I would have thought as well, I just was curious because I haven't heard anything about it. *shrugs*
Dedicated server support for PC confirmed.
Seen part of the demo on youtube.
Not so proud on what it has become.
From the massive weapon carrier to a little wimpy character whit only 2 weapons.
It is a bit more realistic, but he it's duke NUKEM the on man army.
Looks to much like the shooters that are beïng made (must be realistic at all time).
Happy that I didn't pre-ordered that game.
But I'll see what youtube will tell me about the game eventualy
The single player is fantastic and 5 times better than the demo experience. But the lack of PC-specific features on the PC (from an in-game console to proper dedicated servers to multiple manual saving) make it incredibly botched.

DNF is out in NA now.
Amusingly the game is getting terrible scores all around, being called a mediocre product... and 'outdated'.
Did we expect any different?

Apparently the DNF demo is coming to all platforms publicly very soon.

Some improvements are coming to DNF game in the form of a patch.

QuoteThe development team has been hard at work combing through the feedback provided here and elsewhere, with updates based on this feedback currently in the works for all three platforms.
Among the changes coming to PC are a new expanded inventory option that allows you to carry up to four weapons in the single-player campaign, Valve Anti-Cheat System (VAC) support, push-to-talk voice chat, the ability to adjust FOV plus other fixes and improvements that are still being tested.
We'll be sharing more details about the updates, including those coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as they're finalized. Thanks again for your support!
I hope one of the improvements is a multi-game save system. Even if it's still check-point based this game needs multiple game slots.

Some info on the new multiplayer DLC coming soon. It's full of a bunch of parodies of other games. Each new map comes with a special unique weapon. There are also new multiplayer modes. Some of the games it parodies are Call of Duty, Team Fortress 2 (with a map called 2Fort1Bridge), and others. The unique weapon for the TF2 parody map is a minigun which looks....fittingly unmistakably familiar. Also, First Access Club members who preordered the game get this DLC for free.
