Title: Anyone have the original KQ 3 Manual?
Post by: ladydragon on January 25, 2011, 09:41:01 PM
I got KQ 3 from GOG, printed the manual, and I had a really hard time making out some words in the magic spells in the manual. Not that is bad quality, per say, but there is 2 words in the invisible spell that I just can not make out. I even went to my PDF version in zoomed in. I am a little embarrased to ask because I am probably the only one in the world that can not read it.  LOL  It is the Becomming Invisible spell, first line 4th word (I guessed horny toad) and 3ard line, 3ard word that looks like Tire or Fire, but tried both but seem to be wrong. What the heck does it say?

It's "horny toad" and "fire". Don't capitalize either one; I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not, but it might.

that's what I thought, I tried both ways and still became invisible forever.  LOL I'll keep trying, just wanted a second opinion on what it said. thanks!

If you keep trying those and still can't get it to work, then you must be typing something else incorrectly. Here's the entire text of the incantation:

Cactus plant and horny toad,
I now start down a dangerous road.
Combine with fire and mist to make
me disappear without a trace.

:D thank you! I came back to say that is not what I was missing and seen you replied, it was MIST!    this whole time I thought it said wist, even though it made no sense. even had my bro look at it and he said the same. Thanks VERY much for that! I have spent the last few hours on this stupid little spell all because I could not read it.   :-[

Hmm, as I recall there actually is a typo in the original KQ3 manual, or rather a missing word, making it impossible to cast the spell properly (without knowledge of the word). That might be the particular spell.

The corrected spell list appeared in the King's Quest Companion, and a later king's quest collection, as I recall.

Other interesting trivia, is that 15th Anniversery version of the collection, forgot to list the page numbers in the manual, making it impossible to complete the spells. They ended up printing the page numbers in a separate piece of paper inside the box (but I've heard stories where people either lost it without knowing it, or was missing from some of the boxes).

Slant rhyme makes me cringe.

The best KQ3 manual was the Amiga manual. There was something wrong with just about every other version I had read.

What was the Amiga manual like? Did it have special artwork or something, or just corrected text?

If you're referring to the spells, I had a version that came with the MS-DOS game that had no errors in it.

Ya they definitely fixed later printing of the manual. The problem wad only in the initial release as far as I understand.
