The Rant Thread !!!

Today, I shall rant about the evil, terrible, ominous death trap that is French class.

I'll start with the board. It absolutely STINKS. I'm not sure how, or why,  but it makes me gag. Whenever someone has to clean it, they have the touch the filthy rags that wipe the stench all over. Mr. Kouame doesn't seem to realize why we need to go to the bathroom and wash our hands after touching those rags. Also, whenever you clean the board, your hand gets COVERED with the reminants of past board cleanings. Purpleish-black markings are everywhere. It's unsanitary, and it really makes me gag. While Mr. Kouame watches us suffer, he sits behind his desk, as always.

Now, this brings me to the REAL point of my rant, Mr. Kouame himself. At the beginning of the year, he tried teaching us. He gave 14 second explainations, and then gave us a quiz. Every section of the quiz counted as a grade! That makes a small quiz 4 or 5 grades! A normal quiz is only two! When asked as question about a simple concept that someone didn't understand, he typically replied by continuing with a totally different topic (and ignoring the person, even though he called on the person to ask the question,) by going over something on the same topic, but not the actual question (and then, once the question is repeated, asking the person to explain what he just said,) or by saying "It has to rhyme!" and declaring that sufficent. I was a straight A French student for 2 years, but with Mr. Kouame teaching us, no one can learn. I REALLY tried to find the answer to my question, but Mr. Kouame just WON'T help us. :(

Now, he's decided to just give us the book and let us teach ourselves. He sits behind his desk, assigns us sections, and sets us loose. One student has said many times that she really can't learn that way, but he personally attacked her saying that she didn't pay attention and didn't work and was basically stupid. I tried to defend her, and I get yelled at as well. Mr. Kouame keeps sugar packets behind his desk for some reason too. o_O And once, he went to the back and said "No one look or you get 20 point off." He stole soda that someone brought in for a party, and drank straight from it. We have an entire chapter about missing things and how things used to be, and he declined to mention a HUGE grammatical thing about how you literally say "This is missing to me," when you say "I miss this." We've been writing it wrong the entire time, and he says NOTHING. It's no wonder only 3 French students had all A's and B's on their report cards...

It's also no wonder that students flick him off when he's not looking and drop obscene comments in his suggestions box, but I'm not included in that. :P

Heh. We tried that. I told my specialty program-type-thing teacher and a really cool dude who taught us "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" in French, and we ended up getting yelled at. They KNOW I'm not some student who wants to make trouble, but the assistant principal came into our class and yelled at us for not being accepting of Mr. Kouame's teaching styles. I don't handle being yelled at very well either, so I was like crying, and I think the assistant principal thought I wanted pity, so she was more angry. ;P

And the sad thing is, Mr. Kouame replaced the coolest teacher I've ever had. Everyone misses her so much... :'(

The assistant principal came into our class today to "see if we were prepared for our final." :P She was SOOOO trying to see if we were still bering rude to Mr. Kouame. XD

Today we had a quiz even though I wasn't there on Friday. Sherie was teaching us for one day (since, like I said, Mr. Kouame doesn't teach us,) and then we had a quiz. Mr. Kouame said that it was fair for me to take it because he "gave us time to study." Five minutes is not enough to learn a whole chapter! I CAN'T be held accountable for this!

Whee! More ranting about school!

In first period (world history,) we had a worksheet about percentages (yeah, I don't get it either.) One of the questions was "The bank charges 40% interest rate per 6 months on money borrowed. Francesco Petrarch borrowed $250 to finance his book. How much would he have to pay the bank back after one year? Two years?" My answer was 450 dollars for 1 year, and 650 for 2. To find the interest, you multiply the principal (250, in this case) by the rate (40%, or .4) and multiply by the amount of time you have to pay, oui? Since 12 months is twice 6, I put 2. 250*.4*2=200. For 2 years, I just added another 200 for another year of interest.  I was asked to write the answer to the problem on the board, so I did, work and all. My teacher said I did well, but the answers were $350 and $450. I explained what I did, but she said that it was 250*.4*.5 for six months interest, because you have to put the months (6) over 12. Then she multiplied by 2 to get one year, and ended up with 100 dollars of interest instead of 200. The rate is in TERMS of 6 months, so one year is twice the rate. When another Geometry student (all of them agreed with me, :D) tried to explain that you'd have to put the rate in terms of a year if the time is in terms of one year (making the problem 250*.8*1 for one year,) she said that we weren't doing compound interest. Compound interest is something totally different! Eventually, they asked a math teacher, who backed up my world history teacher. I know that with typical interest, it's in terms of a year, so if you only borrow money for a couple months, you don't have to pay as much, but this ISN'T in terms of a year! Eventually, the entire class was just saying "Ok, admit it, you're wrong." I probably should've dropped it, but I WASN'T wrong. When I refused, they started saying that I was being egotistical and that I should just admit it. I'm not the kind of person that won't admit she's wrong when she is, but I'm not going to say I'm wrong when I'm not! Just...now everyone thinks I'm a brat and I don't want people thinking that!

I'm sorry if it sounds like I think whoever reads this is an idiot and doesn't understand simple interest. I'm just trying to explain everything so you don't side with the other students in my class. :P

"The bank charges 40% interest rate per 6 months on money borrowed. Francesco Petrarch borrowed $250 to finance his book. How much would he have to pay the bank back after one year? Two years?"

Here's how I would answer it.  0.4 is for 6 months, so 0.8 is for 12

Total = Principle + Interest per year

Year 1 = $250 + $250 x 0.8
         = $250 + 200
         = $450 after one year

Year 2 = $450 + $250 x 0.8
         = $450 + 200
         = $650

It says interest is only on the money borrowed (i.e. the principle), and not compounded.  If compounded anually (which is usually the case), it would be:

= $450 + $450 x 0.8
= $450 + $360
= $810 in Year 2

And if interest was compounded bi-anually, it would be a lot more than that.  So, you're right and your teacher's wrong. :P  She only calculated interest for 6 months, not 12. XD

I believe you made a calculation error
40%/halfe year makes  96% a full year

you must also calculate interst over intrest:

Total = Principle + Interest per year

halve year 1 = $250 + $250 x 0.4
                  = $250 + 100
= $350 after one halve year

Year 1 = $350 + $350 x 0.4
          = $350 + 140
          = $490 after one year

year 1.5 = $490 + $490 x 0.4
             = $490 + 196
             = $686 after one and a halveyear

Year 2 = $686 + $686 x 0.8
          = $686 + 274.40
          = $960.40

this one is simple and you can't  stack those intrests (40%+40%=80%)

You're compounding interest there and the question doesn't say the interest is compounded. :P

But if it did, then you're correct and that's why I said:
