Oh wow. I have no ideas for your coat of arms, but I HAVE to comment on the absolute gorgeous-ness of where you live and the castle where you used to live. USA is so....banally modern in comparison. All of the pictures you've posted are just gorgeous... <3

Thanks! Though we don't have any Rocky Mountains or Grand Canyons. :(

Agreed, alot of USA is far too boring and modern. Which is why I love Britain so much.

Pfft.. Denmark FTW!! :P

There's nothing particularly special about the Rocky Mountains. They're cold. :P And the Grand Canyon doesn't even sound remotely interesting. XP

You do have the Alps they are just as good as the Rockies. Maybe better. I learned to Ski in the Alps I haven't skied in the Rockies yet. Some day I hope to.

I would like to see the Grand Canyon though.

Alps count if 'we' means Europe, not if by 'we' he means Denmark, which is flat as Michigan a board. :P Unless they re-annex Norway. :D

Yes, I did mean just Denmark. And yes, it is quite flat, but it isn't entirely as flat as most people think it is. :D

And re-annexing Norway is an interesting idea :P

I never knew Denmark once had Norway. I thought they only had a part of Sweden?

Well, we've had Norway, Iceland, a chunk of Sweden (Halland, Skåne & Blekinge), the Faroe Islands, Estonia, Greenland and Tranquebar as well as the Danish West Indies (purchased by the US and now known as the Virgin Islands). Technically speaking we also had England.. for a brief while. Greenland & The Faroe Islands are still Danish today. :)

Oh.. and part of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) was also Danish..

Indeed, although if you want to really technical, Norway was never a part of Denmark, they were in a personal union i.e two countries that happened to have the same King. They had, IIRC, different law codes, tarriffs and the like.  Also if you count the Kalmar Union (a Swede might) Denmark had all of Sweden, Finland and odd bits of Russia, of which Viipuri is probably the only bit people live in. :P

But obviously anyone who consumes Lutefisk is of dubious sanity anyway  , so I am sure it shouldn't be too hard to fool the Norwegians into thinking they are still Danes.  :D

I didn't know that Greenland was a territory of Denmark. That's interesting.

What were they smoking when they named Greenland and Iceland what they did? Their names should be reversed :P

Actually, I believe they were purposely named that way by the Vikings to throw people off. XD

I could be wrong, but I swear I heard that somewhere. :P

I have heard that before many times, but am unsure if it is accurate. A little quick googling suggests it is hard to determine, like so many things from the period. It might a bad translation of ground-land, due to it having few mountains, it might be a reference to the grassy fjords first seen it might have been a marketing ploy to get people with come there. As I have no competency with the sagas or language, I shan't try to make any kind of final judgment between the theories.

Nebel

From what I read in my books about Vikings & ancient Germanic culture, Erik the Red (after being banished from Iceland for murdering someone) went to Greenland and called it Greenland to get people from Norway there. Norway was overpopulated at the time (can you imagine that? :P). It's been quite long since I read it though, and the wiki article indeed says it might have been a erroneous translaten of Gruntland, which means indeed groundland.

Now if only someone could discover a new land and get people out of HERE with a pretty name :P
