- Happy that her homework is done for the week.

- I haz teh muse agains! Back to the Dark Forest I go!

- Listening to KQ3R music again.

- Slightly annoyed at a review I read about TSL episode 4. http://www.honestgamers.com/reviews/9704.html

Seriously?! You didn't like ANYTHING at all about this episode?! And, FYI buddy, it was the Isle of The Beast that had the maze, not the Isle of The Mists, plus the Narrator mentions that Graham doesn't need to go into the kitchen anyway so why would you want to go in there?

How DARE you insult the voice acting and graphics in this game? Do you know how much time and effort these poor people have gone through just to make this game exist at all?!

You sound like you aren't even a Sierra fan to me. Ugh, and that last line about how this would be a bad way to introduce someone to King's Quest. How ironic, since it was this game plus Tv Tropes, plus Paw who got me into the series (and Sierra) at all.

I think no matter what you do, someone's going to hate it. :-\ I'm guessing that reviewer has no idea how much work goes into producing a game (especially with only volunteers).

Some people won't like something no matter what, and we're fine with constructive criticism. However, I do think it's unfair that this reviewer was so ticked off that he couldn't get into a room that doesn't exist for 10 minutes and he decides to blame us for that. (Or at least, so his writing implies.)

I think it's amusing that he tried for that long (and publicized the fact). There really isn't any indication that you should/can enter the kitchen. XD

Steve Abbott | Beta Tester | The Silver Lining

KatieHal

There isn't! Especially since every other room that you CAN enter is so very easy to actually enter!

I tried several times too. XD It seemed to me that if a door existed and were open, that it would be possible to enter it. :P

That said, he is definitely entitled to his opinion and just the fact that other people put effort into something doesn't mean anyone's obligated to like it cf. all poetry written by 14-year-olds ever. :P

- Is considering possibly getting into Dungeons and Dragons. Spoony has convinced me that it is awesome! But, I wouldn't know where to begin nor where to find a good group.

I wonder what class King Graham would be?

He can play the harp and the fiddle, but we've never heard him sing so no Bard.

He's strong yes, but he's very smart too. He can't be a Wizard, Druid or Cleric or anything like that because he doesn't know Magic.

I just can't imagine him as a monk, as they get the touch of death eventually. I think Graham would resent that.

Sir Hereward may have said "pick up anything that isn't nailed down..." but even Graham has limits, so no Asassain nor Rogue/Thief.

I would say he'd make a good Paladin or Ranger, since Graham knows how to track things and use a bow  and a sword plus is very kind and just as a king... but those involve Magic as well.

No Barbarian/Berserker or Fighter either, since Graham prefers to think more with his head than his muscle.

The best I can think of is a Knight or Cavelier, since well... he WAS a "Sir Graham" at one time. PLUS, it's been mentioned before, both officially and in TSL, that Graham has very strong willpower and is not going to give up for anything easily. If it came down to it, he could probably fight 'til his dying breath.

He did do a bit of spellcasting in KQ5...

Graham would be a knight/cavalier/paladin, yeah. One who doesn't minx/max and throw all their stats into strength and con, as well.

D&D...hm. It can be fun. But it can be a lot of number crunching and boredom, too. I'm an avid roleplayer, and while I got my start in D&D like many, I'm not really interested in it anymore. I've come to enjoy systems with less crunch and more character-focused mechanics (Unisystem and 7th Sea are my personal favorites). D&D also moved into the figurine-based gameplay in 4th edition which I don't enjoy at all. I don't want to count out spaces in my turn in battle like it's a board game. I want cool descriptions of slashing the bad guy with my sword, grabbing a curtain, swinging across a room and blasting someone with a spell. I don't want my adventure to be a series of rolls that add up on tests to see if advance the plot to the next point. I want my decisions in who my character is and what I do in a situation to shape the story that comes. And if I happen to miss the battle that could've happened, I don't want it to necessarily mean that we're done an hour early.

I RP with a great group of friends with great imaginations and improv experience, I know I'm spoiled. But for me, D&D doesn't deliver what I'm looking for anymore.

It CAN be good--great even! It depends on you and your group. But, overall, just be aware that if it's not your thing, there are a LOT of other RPGs (and other groups) out there, too. :)

(Also, most gaming stores have places for looking for/recruiting for groups. Also try craigslist, or find a local forum or email list for the same, see who's recruiting, or also looking for a group, etc.)

Minx/Max?

Con?

What do these terms mean?

Hmm... is it even possible for a group to play, say, an earlier edition of the game provided they have it? For example, what if I said, "Hey, can we play AD&D?" or is it, "No! There is a new edition out, you are forced to play this new edition! Forget about the older stuff right now!"

If it's possible to do the former then that might actually be really fun!

KatieHal

Oh, so you're so new at this, it's downright adorable! :)

Hmm..I'm going to start a new thread before this threatens to take over this one.

Awww, thanks! :)

Yeah everything I know about the game comes from one or two conversations about it with my Papa (who used to play it back when he was a kid) and Spoony.

Graham dies from a 1-foot fall at the beach of Mordack's castle so con is out. It does take a bit of strength to climb a rope in a blizzard and some dexterity to do some of the swaps along with climbing a 100000 foot beanstalk, so maybe some decent str/dex. Also he's ripped like all hell in the concept images in KQ5. His cha is probably pretty decent; it does take some serious charisma to just declare yourself king of Daventry 2 seconds after Edward croaks on the floor and people accept it. Wis is probably decent too, because "hhhhmmmmmmmmm......... cheese will DEFINITELY work here." Int probably not too decent but this is because I'm comparing Graham to Alexander here. Alexander is a reader and a scholar. I don't think Graham only reads books only when he has to, but I have no reasoning behind this.

I think in general point and click adventure game protagonists are chaotic good.

Edit- I can't really place a class on Graham or really any point-and-clicker... I guess there's no "Protagonist" class. "Thief" makes the most sense to me. I don't know really how I'd classify him. Guybrush from MI is much easier to classify. Definitely a Chaotic Neutral Thief in my opinion.

Actually I don't think I can even label Graham "good." He kidnaps leprechauns in KQ5 and stick/tomato in TSL all for personal gain. What a jerk.

I'd say at least Chaotic Good. As for the stairs, he clearly rolled a 1 there ad fumbled :)

Hm...maybe he's a multi-class character. Fighter-Thief?

Guybrush took the prestige class of Dashing Swordsman. :)

Hahaha! I can picture that easily!
-
(Alexander, Rosella, Graham, Cassima, Valanice and Edgar are all playing D&D. Rosella is DM currently, taking a cue from Amy)

Rosella: Finally, after a long voyage you reach the island where your adversary Mordack, is staying. Now, all you need to do is find him, beat him... somehow, and get out of here. At the beach, there is a long flight of stone steps that leads up to the castle, and you start to climb them. Okay daddy, you go first. Roll!

Alexander: Why have I got a bad feeling about this?

Graham: *rolls... a 1* WHAT?! NO!

Rosella: Oops! You trip over your own clumsy feet, and immediately fall right the stairs onto the rocks below! Your scream is cut off by a cracking sound as your neck is broken, killing you near instantly!

Graham: X( *mutters something unpleasant under his breath*

I think a 1 would've been breaking an arm or something.

This guy fell from a 1-foot drop and died.

That is like rolling a 1 and then the die caught on fire, ignited, and then flew to the moon.

And I mean that's only happened to me twice.

He also failed his damage check with a 1!

In one game my friends were playing, an infamous death occurred. The system was Battlelords, a game where death is frequent and ridiculous, as everyone is playing alien mercenaries with crazy guns and whatnot in the far flung future.

A player who's rather known for going through PCs like nobody's business takes over running another guy's character, as the original player had to leave for the night. The guy leaving even explicitly says, "Don't get him killed!" (in semi-jest).

The first thing the incoming player does is toss a grenade through a hole in the floor to blow up some bad guys below. He rolls his throw.

He fails. He rolls to see what will happen. The grenade will bounce back up. He rolls to see where the grenade will land The grenade lands at his feet and he dies!

The FIRST and ONLY thing he did! Sometimes, it just happens.

But you get a hilarious story out of it, sometimes, too. :)

...and admittedly that was only because I set it ablaze and launched it to the moon so that I would never use it again since it was clearly all out of natural-20's. :( On the plus side, its send off surpasses Viking funerals. :P

*didn't see this post before his other response*

See, the thing about Graham is that we actually can pretty much figure that the thing that distinguishes him from other knights-errant in Daventry is that unlike them: he took a level in Rogue early.

He most likely has a few levels of fighter and the rest are dumped into Cavalier. None of which is as telling as the way he's spent his skill points throughout his levels: lots and lots of points in things like Balance, Use Magic Device, a few in Jump (used for that one thing in KQ1 but not much thereafter), SO MANY in Swim, Diplomacy--huge investment here since he hates fighting--some points into the stealth skills (but not enough to like... turn the KQ series into the Thief series obviously :P). Basically, he has this really eclectic skill point set up (most of which come from his INT which he didn't dump stat).

As a king, he either has epic-tier charisma bonuses from his gear or has a naturally high CHA score too.

Notably, he probably dump-statted STR to be honest, if we consider his aversion to fighting. Possibly CON as well (this would actually explain WHY he can die from such low drops on occasion XD :P).

Alexander and Rosella are probably similar. Valanice is probably the only one in the family with a higher CHA than INT (judging by KQ7). :P

EDIT: forgot about Swim... he's gotta have points in Swim. :P

I think I actually have figured out a reason for why he can die there, low rolls from D&D notwithstanding: he's an old man, and as he's gotten older, his bones are a lot more brittle. He knows he shouldn't be adventuring anymore which is why he tried to give up his hat to Alexander and Rosella.
