This is the thread for official TSL updates.

I last gave a major update in March, which you can read here.

Today, I have some good news: we can actually play through all of Episode 5 from front to back!

Now this is far from saying it's DONE--just that we have enough of the logic and placeholders in there such that it's possible to get from start to finish, and that logic is all working right now. There's still a ways to go, but that we can actually play through the whole thing is definitely a big step.

Our current percentages stand at:

  • Game logic and programming: 95%
  • Props: 80%
  • Backgrounds: 70% (without polish)
  • Cinematics: 55%
  • Characters: 30% (including uprezzing and rigging)

So, good job team, and keep tuning in for more updates!

Whee!!!

:D

What's logic? I thought adventure games didn't have that? ;)

KatieHal

Har-har :P

Game logic, as we mean it here, is telling the game what to do when the player does something. The scripter inputs the information such that the knows if you use Look on an object, it should give a certain response.

Talking about "logic" brings back bad memories of Baggins complaining that TSL episode 3 was too illogical...even though he said his favorite KQ was the original KQ2, which was one of the most illogical games in the entire series.

Wow... I am so glad I never was around for this guy. I wonder what he thought of the AGDI remake that we both love so much?

Baggins is in charge of the King's Quest Wiki, thereby removing any credibility it may have. This is the page for KQ2+:
http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/King's_Quest_II%3A_Romancing_the_Stones

It seems to be mostly neutral on the whole deal, though it starts the page off with saying it's "non-canon" and a "retelling" of the original.

Its page on TSL is here: http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/The_Silver_Lining

I remember this page used to have an opening paragraph that said in Italics: "This is a game inspired by the King's Quest series", as if to say "This isn't really King's Quest, you guys. It's definitely not canon. Never will be." It reeked of Baggins' egotistical and elitist online personality. Thankfully, that paragraph seems to have been removed.

Here's the page for the critical reception to TSL: http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/The_Silver_Lining_reviews

Baggins seems to favor quoting the mixed reviews a lot. And by that I mean a lot. There are plenty of people out there that like TSL, but you wouldn't know it from looking at this page.

Wonderful news! Thank you for the update KatieHal, and please thank everyone for all their hard work so far!

Oh my goodness! This is the best news I have heard in a minute! This touches me its getting done. I started to lose hope in this because this game touches my heart. You know, King's Quest IV was my first adventure game. It was on an IBM 286. Anyway once I figured out adventure games an played an beat the series. Yes I finished Mask of Eternity once an never want to play it again I have to say King's Quest III an VI are both my favorites.

I love the silver Lining. It's a relaxing an exciting game. I like all the characters. It makes me very happy but would love the play an enjoy the final chapter.

I apologize for my negative attitude although I tried to keep it to a minimum. It's just my I so appreciate The Silver Lining. Please make this final chapter come true. Thank you, Shalkar

KatieHal

Thanks for the love and support everyone! :) As we've said, it is slow-going, but it is still going. We appreciate your patience.

Ah, the KQ wiki entry on TSL. Sometimes I go there and read the "differences" section when I need a good laugh.  ;D

Yeah, someone needs to take on fixing that article without Baggins interfering. For one thing, the gallery (save for the map picture) contains all alpha non polished screenshots like that Edgar one. Same goes with the QFG Omnipedia, what with all the stubs and sometimes no pictures of items.

Though technically KQ2+ IS a retelljng of the original, since it's a remake. But it's much broader too, since it expands and creates it's own awesome little universe and you know what you're right Numbers never mind.

What a pleasant surprise to see things are still going on! I only recently got enough bandwidth to download TSL, although following it since the start (South African internet is crazy expensive). HUGE King's Quest fan - I think I've been playing it since birth (my father played it with me).

Overall - an amazing sequel. The story has really been part of me growing up and this almost feels like everything is finally heading to a real conclusion. I am enjoying it immensely and it would break my heart to never know the end, so, really, really looking forward to Episode 5!

A very sincere thank you for all the trouble everyone's going through to deliver a fantastic game! I just know it's gonna be great.  ;D

Unfortunately, Baggins is the one in charge of the King's Quest Wiki. For us normal fans to clean up the Wiki, Baggins would need to willingly relinquish his authority. And due to his massive ego, that's obviously never going to happen. Taking control of the Wiki would be the Internet equivalent of toppling a despot, and it's just not worth the trouble for something that matters so little in the grand scheme of things.

We could set up a new KingsQuest Wiki. Without him... We all know enough about the whole series to do it. And we could do it in different languages. Oh and the TSL-Article now emphasizes again, that it is non-canon and "inspired by KingsQuest".

Numbers

Creating a replacement Wiki--in multiple languages, no less--sounds like an awful lot of work. I'd say it's better to try to clean up the mess we already have rather than go for the whole "burn the world so it can be reborn from the ashes" mentality. There has already been extensive work to overhaul TSL's pages as of this writing.

It probably could be possible to make a TSL-exclusive Wiki, if that's something people are interested in. As long as the people in charge there prevent anyone with the username "Baggins" or similar from making any page edits. He's done enough damage as it is.

By the way, Baggins is also on the Wolfenstein Wiki. On this page...
http://wolfenstein.wikia.com/wiki/Wolfenstein:_The_Old_Blood
...at the end of the opening paragraph, there is this line:

"According to the developers, "Wolfenstein: The Old Blood" contains occult and supernatural elements and includes many references to the older titles. Despite this, the so called "supernatural" elements are heavily implied to have a mundane explanation."

Gee, I wonder if Baggins, the master contrarian himself, wrote that? And if you click on the "talk" link at the top of the page, it takes you to a quick conversation between some anonymous user and Baggins. Yep, Baggins questions the authority of mainstream game developers too.

Baggins isn't just damaging King's Quest. He's damaging every video game series he's ever played. I distinctly remember seeing him on a World of Warcraft forum getting mad because people wouldn't listen to him when he tried to connect something that was obviously non-canon to the rest of the canon series. I can't for the life of me locate that thread, though.

I like to pretend that the people getting slapped in this video are all clones of Baggins.

KatieHal

Hey guys, while we obviously appreciate the support and the desire to clean up some errors on the KQ wiki page for TSL (and the efforts of those doing so!), don't turn this into a bashing session on one person.

This is exciting news! Thanks for keeping us updated, Katie.

I don't really care how long it takes, but it would be heartbreaking for this project to slip away without being finished. Wishing you all the best with the remaining job.

I'm curious: I thought that Episode 5 was going to take place in Daventry (not Green Isles), hence justifying the switch to the new engine. (In one update, we were told that most of the content for Episode 5 would be new anyway, so switching engines would not mean recreating the bulk of the content from Episodes 1--4.) However, the screenshots you posted in March feature existing locations from the Green Isles. So actually, how much content from Episodes 1--4 will be ported over to Episode 5? (Hopefully you aren't recreating all of the old locations in the new engine.)

KatieHal

Spoiler for the end of Ep 4, but Ep 5 takes place in the Dreamworld, which has a mix of screens from all the previous games, but with new twists. There is a portion that takes on the Isle of Mists as well (not in the Dreamworld).

And thanks!
