I also took swimming lessons, but they didn't do much good. I can only swim that far, and that really isn't far. ;P
After that, I suffer from the same problem as you.

I can freestyle and backstroke adequately... never could figure out the proper kick for breaststroke or butterfly, however.

As for sinking... the top half of me floats just fine (no comments from the peanut gallery!), but for some reason my legs always sink.

Don't know what freestyle is, so no comment on that, however, I can crawl a bit, and breaststroke a bit less, the backstroke a bit better, no butterfly tho.
Absolutely no floating for me, and especially not my legs. So, in order to stay afloat completely, I have to start flapping my legs. :P But, when I flap my legs, I get tired, so, naturally, I can't stay afloat for long. :S

Sorry, I meant front crawl. Technically it's not synonymous with freestyle, but old usage tendencies die hard.
