Perceptions of people in real life vs. online

The talk in the Ugly Mug thread got me thinking on this. For some reason that all got me thinking about how we judge people differently just because we can or can't "see" them.

Example, I'm going to NYC for the voice auditions and am staying at Mike's, meeting him, Cesar and others for the first time in person.

Me? I'm okay with this. I've known and worked closely and professionally with them for over a year. And I've got no worries about meeting them.

Absolutely any "grown up" I've told about this, the first thing they ALL say is bring xxxxx with you! (xxx being 'roommate' 'brother' 'father' 'other person')

This has gotten REALLY annoying. As if my judgement is skewed because they're people I've met online. I want to say to these people, Look, I know them and trust them, and I'm not an idiot! Just because I haven't SEEN them before! Sheesh. I understand the concern and caution, and if I felt uncomfortable with it, I wouldn't go. I get the feeling that people who don't understand or frequent at all the online community can only ever think of the stories of people meeting internet buddies and ending up dead and raped and whatnot.  Yeah there are freaks out there, but there are people we meet everyday who can be even worse! I would never go and meet someone if I didn't think it was safe and if I didn't know them well.

Hmm...soo...yeah, questions, comments, opinions?

Quote from: Jeysie on December 29, 2003, 12:45:25 PMI personally wouldn't meet anyone online I hadn't been talking to for a lengthy amount of time previous, and seen a pic of. I would also generally prefer a first meeting with someone online to be in a public place, or with an offline friend in tow. But that's all simply because I prefer to err a bit on the side of caution in *everything* in life. YMMV.
You do know pics can be faked, don't you? I'm also not such a fast 'meeter', and certainly if I don't feel I know the other person enough (even though I have a pic), I'd meet in a public place.

Quote from: Jeysie on December 29, 2003, 12:45:25 PMIt only seems like there's a lot of wackos out there because they're the ones that get the publicity. Who ever runs an article on "Successful Meetings With Online Friends"? It's just not "news-worthy" (i.e. exciting)  enough.
That's a problem of the media worldwide. On tv at best the good stories are round up and put into a small slot in with the other news so it goes by unnoticed. In papers they're certainly not on the front page and probably in very small caps muffled away somewhere. The negative stories get the upper hand and the most attentian, and I find that very worrying. :-\

Quote from: Jeysie on December 29, 2003, 12:45:25 PMBesides, Katie, just remind your friends and family that the auditions are going to be held in a public place with a whole ton of other people around also auditioning.
The auditions might be, but not the staying over. :P No, seriously, I have seen no sign of any malevolent behavior from either Cesar or Mike on his forum so I think you're in safe hands. :D

You mean Mikey isn't going to have any floor space on Friday night? Nuts. On the bright side, if he does, you and I, Katie, can dish about cute guys and drive Mikey and my roomie insane. :suffer:

Peace & Luv, Liz

LOL! Indeed!

Well, my plans have to come together thusly, in fact. I'm going up Thursday night, meeting a friend and staying with him in NJ for that night, then he's coming into the city with me Friday. So my mom's fears can be at rest ;-) And I get to see a friend of mine too! Who keeps telling me he's going to also audition, but I don't think he's gotten around to emailing the audition email yet...,  ::)

Yay! Girly dish time!  ;D
