Louisiana Night

It works fine for me, I hope it works for you

sivvrianBARRY

Alright, I'm attempting to install the DOS version. Now the only question is......how do you install it :-[? I tried running the install file from DOSbox, but it doesnt seem to work, it just freezes up when it asks me which game I want to install (I have the KQ Collection).

Louisiana Night

First run the Install program(install.bat). Then follow the instructions.

You'll need to mount the cdrom drive, as a cdrom. Like this(assuming your drive is called d).

mount d d:\ -t cdrom

If you'll explain your problem a little more, I might be able to help.

sivvrianBARRY

I figured out the "mount" part, and I ran install.bat, but the actual install program is what gives me trouble. It says to press "g" for KQ6, but when I press it nothing happens. The only keys that I get any responses for (I can't remember which ones, there's only a couple though) say that the Apple games need to be installed from Windows.

PS: When I run install.bat from windows, not DOSbox, EVERY key gets that one message about the Apple games.

Louisiana Night

Strange, I'll see if I can find out what's happening, and how to solve it.

sivvrianBARRY

I was fooling around with other BAT files, and they don't seem to work either. The keys that pop up the Apple message are N, E, R, and T, if that helps. What's strange is that the Apple message says to press any key to return to the Install screen, and all of them work, but only those 4 keys do anything on the actual installation screen. I can't even exit out to DOS without exiting and reopening DOSbox.

Louisiana Night

Let me see if I understand this. In XP, with and without dosbox, you have trouble using bat files.

You put your main hardrive as C?

You put your cdrom in as D?

Used the correct mount command?

add -t cdrom at the end, to make it seen as a cdrom.

Louisiana Night

What version of XP are you using?

Anyone else have any ideas? Because I'm as confused as harvester is.

I don't  use XP, so I wouldn't know if this problem has something to do with XP(yeah, I read the name of the thread).

GunHoMac

use VDMSound or compatibility mode
It's peanut butter jelly time!

Louisiana Night

He tried VDMsound.

Compatibility mode works with DOS games?

I tried compatibility mode with the Windows version, didn't work.

Jeysie

Technically, AFAIK all that the install program does for the DOS version is copy the files to your hard drive and put the necessary paths into the configuration files. So if you feel like tinkering, you could copy the files manually, and edit the config files manually.

With KQ6(collection version), it's not as simple as it sounds.

Jeysie

I know it's not easy, but it is doable, if the normal install just won't work. One of us could provide our config files as a template, perhaps (I also have the Collection).

Spikey

As far as I'm aware, the Collection version *should* run in XP if you install and run with VDM Sound. I've got it working..

I've had VDMSound for a while, and this might sound foolish, but how exactly do you run a program with VDMSound? I right click KQ6 but no option to run with VDMSound appears.

You know folks I've got (perhaps great) idea. At more then a few points on this forum discussion on how to get various "King's Quest" games going on modern computers.

Would somebody care to join me in getting together an authoritative technical guide for this, we can make up a web page and post it... someplace I'm sure... we could even use my server... :)

Eric: Nag Spikey... he's claimed several times in several places that he's never had any issues running Sierra games in XP, but nobody's been able to weasel any specific tech instructions out of him on how he does it. ;)
