Sir Prize

I have the King's Quest Collection and have been able to run King's Quest VI on Windows XP using DOSBox.

I agree that the batch file installers can be difficult to get working, but after reading this batch file, I noticed that all it does after the user selects to install king's quest 6 is run "install6.exe -f" on the second collection CD.

You should be able to get DOS King's Quest VI installed if you just run install6.exe directly.  I usually do the install from Windows XP and then run the game in DOSBox.  DOSBox is compatible with many games, but is not necessarily compatible with all of their installers.

The sound in KQ6 may produce a lot of static in DOSBox if you choose any sound card other than Thunderbird.  DOSBox can emulate Thunderbird, so feel free to choose this option even if you have a different sound card.

Hope this helps!

I still have the original KQ1 for the IBM PCjr and it was in a plastic box with a picture of a knight on the front.  It was on one 5 1/4 inch disk and used the three sound PCjr internal speaker.  :>  I have played the later versions of KQ1 and I did not really notice any big differences until of course Sierra updated KQ1 to a VGA version with support for sound cards.  LN, have you played the new King's Quest I and King's Quest II+ available for free from this website?

Hey guys,

So, I just recently reinstalled KQ1-KQ7 (MoE is totally not worth it) on my computer, just to remind me of the past. Of course, KQ7 was recent enough to work fine with my computer. I found a program to make music/sound work for KQ1-KQ3. However, I've been unable to find anything to make music/sound work for KQ4-KQ6 (And KQ5 won't even load at all, it just tells me that it was unable to initialize my audio card, and then closes). I'm sure someone out there has been through this before, and would have some advice to lend? "Or am I merely wishing it was so? *sigh*" (Hopefully, I remember that quotation from KQ6 pretty close to accurate ;))

Thanks guys!
Matt

Welcome.

DOSbox, or VDMsound is what most people use.

P.S. You joined just in time for the new smilies. FUN!

In regards to the KQ5 issue, you can give this program a try:

VDMsound is what I used to get KQ1-3 working. I'll try DOSbox for KQ4-6 and let ya know if it works. Thanks! :)

If you're using the KQ Collection, there are files on the CD about your problem.

P.S. In case you didn't know...

DOSbox doesn't work with Windows versions of the game. It only works with the DOS versions.

Funny, the AGI games work fine for me without any emulators :S
What OS are you using?

Uhm, Storm... I think it's a fairly safe guess that he's using XP....

Okay, another problem...

I've got all the music/sounds working, thanks to your help. :) But, in KQ5, I'm not getting any of the speech. I think it might be that I accidentally deleted the speech file when I copied the games to a new CD-R. But I'm not sure about this. Does anyone know what file is the speech/voice file for KQ5? If you can tell me, I can determine whether it simply isn't there, or if the problem's a bit more complicated... :\
