ok I've freed the butterfly completely

and I'm stuck as to what to do now.  I can't seem to let it go, and it won't let me click on the guardian to "present" it to her

Which guardian is this? How many versions of the guardian have you gone through? If it's the second one, that's not what you need for this one.

There's a book in the bookshop that can help you figure out how to get past such a monster.

I've tried using the skull totem on it that doesn't work fully either, I'm running out of ideas

That's generally the right idea, but you need to modify the totem in some way.  Try looking at it in your inventory.
