I really want to finish this game because quite frankly, the story is brilliant and it's fun.

That is...what I've played is fun.
It's just too darn glitchy! I've been saving every room or so because it keeps wanting to crash.
Not only that, but most of the time I have to open and close the game several times before it loads properly. It keeps wanting to load without the sound. For some reason, when it does this, it skips the Phoenix opening emblem at the opening screen.

But even through all this, I was willing to tough it out and get to the end of Chapter 3...except now it won't load at all. The opening menu loads fine, but when I try to open my save file I get a black screen with the Walk cursor and that's it. It started doing this right after I was able to get Alexander's hair. Seconds after that, it crashed and my save file won't load properly anymore.

I realize you put a lot of work into this game...but you seriously need to put more effort into bug checking before you release an episode. I'm sad to say, I don't think i'll be able to finish this, nor am I likely to download any future episodes.  Sorry...

What resolution are you running the game at and are you playing in windowed mode or fullscreen?  We're working on narrowing these crashing issues down and it seems to happen more often at resolutions that aren't standard widescreen or fullscreen resolutions (for some reason these cause issues with saving games) and with higher reflections settings on with the game running in a fullscreen mode instead of in a window.

My screen resolution is 1366 x 748 and I usually play full screen.

Try switching it to a standard widescreen resolution like 1280 x 720.  See if that has any effect on things at all.  If not, try setting the game to a lower detail level with the boxes for extra reflections and things unchecked or see if removing the option for running the game in fullscreen.  Let me know if any of those improve the gameplay for you.

Nope. Just tried all of your suggestions and it remains the same. The game still loads wonky most of the time without the music and my save file (from what I can tell) seems to be corrupted. It loads with a black screen and all I can do is move the Walk icon around empty space.

So you can't load any of your save files at all now right?  Could you attach one of them to a message here (just change the extension to .zip or .txt so you can post it) so I can take a look and see if I can figure out what's going on there?

Might be the duplicate item thing that others found caused this. Thankfully I never had this problem when I was playing, but it still crashed quite a bit which was pretty frustrating. The no sound thing - I noticed it does that if you try to skip the garage games splash screen at the beginning. Wait for that to show, then once the phoenix thing starts, click to skip if you want.

I agree, with Underdog, this is a major problem.  I have had these same issues and attempted the same fixes since episode 1.

I tried to show my wife the game and after 3 attempts of trying to get the game to load properly, she just walked away.

Has anyone looked into this being sound driver related instead of a graphics related problem?

We're actually pretty sure we know what the graphical thing is that's causing the problem and we're working on a way to test fixing it.

And believe me, I'd love it if we could spend weeks just testing these things on hundreds of different kinds of computers, but that just isn't possible for a fan company to do.  We're definitely going to see to it that we have more time dedicated specifically to testing on the next episode though.

You might want to consider adding some testers that had problems on this episode.  I would imagine they might be prime subjects to have issues again.
I didn't know how much I really enjoyed the Sierra Adventure Games until I played them all over again 15 years later.

We definitely will be - when we get closer to finishing up the episode we'll pull a few more on board who had troubles with this one to see if our work has fixed bugs for them.
