What would Roberta think now??

You guys worked so hard to gain her approval of episode 1, now that a bit more of your story is out there, do you think she still has the same feelings as before?  I for one doubt it.  The story from KQ3 and KQ5 seem to not fit TSLs plot for obvious reasons.  I would love to know what she thinks now.
I didn't know how much I really enjoyed the Sierra Adventure Games until I played them all over again 15 years later.

I'd be interested as well, obviously, but I would be surprised if we heard more from her. If we do, awesome, but she's usually been very quiet and uninvolved in commenting on fangames. (Which, naturally, is why we were thrilled that she had such great comments for us on Episode 1!)

What's your obvious reasons? I don't see any issues. I could see how they might make the twists they're introducing lose impact, but if you're worried about the heart of the game it's definitely there. Just cause they're not following the game 1:1, and that it introduces alot of darker elements doesn't mean she'll be disappointed.

chucklas

Here are the obvious reasons, and we could expand on some of the less obvious ones if you want...

1)  Manannan has no trouble killing Alexander in KQIII.  This would NEVER happen based on the new storyline introduced in TSL.  Alexander gets killed if you wait around too long and don't get into any trouble even so you can't claim he only kills Alexander in moments of rage either.

2) In KQV one of the big threats made by Shadrack is that he is going to feed the Royal family to Manannan, starting with Valanice.  This makes no sense either given that according to TSL Valanice is Manannan's daughter.  There is no way that he would feed Manannan's daughter and grandchildren to him.  This makes no sense either.

To me, those two things are in direct conflict with the plot of the original games.

As for taking the game in their own direction, that is POS's choice and I can't say much to what they wanted to do.  It is their game and they can do what they feel makes sense.  People are going to love it, hate it, or have little opinion.  I personally think it goes against the originals.  That by itself does not make the game bad.  It just means they went away from the facts previously established in the series.  That is why I wonder what Roberta would think now.  Everyone here was so quick to use her comments on episode 1 to defend the game, I wonder if she would say the same things now or once the game is complete.  I personally think that she would not have such high praise.  I doubt she would agree with the direction of the story.

We haven't heard from the Williams yet. I think that Roberta already said what she was going to say about this, but if there's anything new, we'll make sure to post it.

As for your comments, the whole thing about Manannan killing Alexander at any given moment is still there. More of that in upcoming episodes as we develop that story plot further.

I think you meant Mordack and not Shadrack. In any case, Mordack was a twisted toad. He could make whatever threats he wanted to make and it was completely in character that he'd say something as twisted as that. That doesn't really contradict anything.

Yes, Mordack.  thanks.  I look forward to the rest of the game, like I said, just curious to hear her take.  Congrats on getting this far!

Love the game thus far!! Had a lot of crashing though, but the storyline is amazing.  I think it fits with the plot of kq3 fine. After all, Alexander lives through the episode so is never technically killed.  He is often threatened yes, and assumes his fate would be the same as the other slave boys.  Can't wait for episode 4!!!

Right, he lives...but if you do something wrong, he dies.  He wouldn't die if the story fit.  It is fine they went in their own direction, it is their choice.

This is one of the biggest apparent contradictions with the original games - I am interested in seeing how this is explained. :)

This may just be me, but the way I approach the story is in a canonical perspective. True, if you do something wrong, Alexander would be killed. But Alexander wasn't killed. In fact, he made it back to Daventry and was reunited with his family. I could easily ask a similar question, "Why does every King's Quest game after the first one depict Graham as a king, if Graham gets eaten by the dragon while attempting to get the Magic Mirror?" The answer would be simple: I'm not very good at playing King's Quest. Just because you can die in the game doesn't mean the deaths are considered canonical, especially if there are sequels that suggest otherwise. Now technically, The Silver Lining is fan fiction and not an official sequel, but they are treating the storyline as if Alexander wasn't killed by Manannan. The only way the story wouldn't fit is if Alexander was killed by Manannan, but he wasn't, so the point is moot.

I  think what they mean is Manannan's intentions- not his actions. He intended on killing Alexander when he turned 18. Not cuddling him up and teaching him dark arts like all good grandfathers should.

I'd rather wait and see how Phoenix approach this issue. I'm sure they have a logical reason.

It's been a while since I've played KQIII, but is it stated that Manannan killed all the boys when they reached 18? I'm pretty sure it said it in the Companion. But either way, I don't believe in the game it says that Manannan is planning on killing Alexander...but Alexander assumes it's going to happen based on past experience.

Maybe Alexander read the KQ3 manual.

What would Roberta think? I don't know. She and Ken did emphasize, however, that the team should make their own game rather than trying to make it as they thought she would. :)

Very true, snabbott :)

I think it's a little ridiculous to ask this question and presume what she would say in any case. What would she say now? We don't know unless we ask her and she gives a reply. It could be anything.

He seems to have read the Guidebook to the Land of the Green Isles in KQ6 ;P. So that's very possible.

KatieHal

That seems like an arguable point--which I say because of conflicting sources.

In the game, Alex finds the Guidebook in Alhazred's room and the narrator remarks that book would've been awfully helpful when he first arrived there--which obviously implies that Alex never saw or read the book himself. However, the Companion apparently says that he got a copy from Derek Karlavagen (or however that's spelled), but lost it during the shipwreck. This conflicts almost directly with the narrator's line upon finding the book.

(I find the latter version kind of lame, personally, but I find a lot of what the Companion decided to add to the stories kind of lame, admittedly.)
