I do like the idea of making the main character in Skyrim serve a prophetic purpose. I was underwhelmed by the role that the character in Oblivion played. Skyrim on the other hand is raising the bar, I think.

Going back to the idea of Morrowind? That would be interesting, and if that is what they're doing I'd be interested to see just how they would do it.

I saw some gameplay footage recently and it was all third-person.....hopefully that's not the default control standard.

I saw some first person gameplay, so it's definitely not.

Nah, it'll be first person default, most likely.  There's been plenty of first person footage anyway.  It WOULD be nice to finally have proper third person control/movement in an Elder Scrolls game though.  Hasn't been done properly yet, but the video we've seen so far from Skyrim does look promising.  I'd love to be able to switch back and forth at will and not suffer a huge drop in realism because of ridiculous looking third person animation and movements.

I think the main problem from before was the Gamebryo engine. Considering Skyrim has a whole new engine built from the ground up, it may very well do third-person better. I'm hoping they can take the same engine they built for Skyrim over to Fallout 4.

Anything can change before a game's release. Personally, I can't live without the first-person perspective in an Elder Scrolls game. I wish Red Dead Redemption was first-person, but I can live with it. Elder Scrolls, however, MUST be first person.

I agree. I can't play Fallout 3 in third person; the first person perspective for both Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls just works for me.

Hahahaha....Read Dead Redemption would be TERRIBLE in first person.  It would require completely redesigning the basic mechanics of the game.  First person horse riding, for example, would be nearly impossible to get to look right.  And don't quote me Oblivion's first person horse riding--that looked like s***, what with the comically small horse head that still took up half the view.  And that's just one of a million other things that would have to be changed.

kindofdoon

Horse riding in Oblivion was one of the low points of the game, imo. It just totally failed to capture any sense of excitement. It's better in Assassin's Creed and Shadow of the Colossus.

I agree the game works best in third person, I just wish it had a first person view as well. I just like first person better. Sue me. :P

Also, I thought Oblivion's horse riding was fine, if slow.

Lambonius

Yeah...even the shooting mechanic of RDR wouldn't work right in first person.  It's not really an "aim and shoot" type of gameplay--it's more quick reflexes/auto-aim from person to person type shooting.  A first person look or aim might have been a nice addition, but I just can't see any way they would have actually improved the gameplay.  :)

Some new boner-inducing Skyrim screens came out today.  God, I can't wait for this game.  Oh, and they came with an interview about a few of the new game mechanics.  Check it out here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/elderscrollsvskyrim/news.html?sid=6308882&om_act=convert&om_clk=picks&tag=picks;title;6&mode=previews

Actually, the giantbomb.com article is the best one I've read so far.  It has the most detailed breakdown of the same demo presentation all the major gaming sites are writing about at the moment.

Of particular interest should be the section that mentions that third person view is MASSIVELY upgraded this time around, and in addition to not being utterly broken, actually looks really fluid and playable.  So much so that he speculates many console players will opt for it over the first person view.  He did confirm that first person view is still the primary view though.  So you can rest easy, MI.  ;)

:). Thanks for the link. Something to do for the next half hour or so before Portal 2 launches.

There are 40 new minutes of new Skyrim gameplay from this year's QuakeCon. It mostly goes through the same stuff as the E3 demo a few months ago, but in greater detail. Unfortunately, the audience is very rowdy and frequently buries poor Todd Howard's audio (as you might expect from a Quake crowd).
